The most famous group in the world of modern talking. Modern Talking Biography

In the second half of the 1980s, the group - the duet "Modern Talking" was perhaps the most popular pop group in our country. The team broke up a long time ago, but its fans are still interested in the biography of the performers of this group, and they believe that the duet will be revived.

Modern Talking Group - biography

Producer Dieter Bohlen was looking all over Germany for a guy who could be trusted with new hits. 20-year-old handsome Thomas Anders (real name Bernd Weidung) fit in all respects: he played the piano, guitar, had already managed to record a single and take part in the tour. During the audition, Dieter came up with an idea: to go on stage with him. Play with contrast! The duet turned out to be colorful: a brutal blond and a slender brunette. And the single You "re My Heart, You" re My Soul, released in 1984, took first place in all European charts.

Especially popular group Modern Talking has become in our country. Jokes immediately appeared about the "sick" Dieter, and the name of the duet was changed to "Shock in the face." Jokes are a sign of true recognition! But before the fans had time to rewrite the group's first vinyl albums on cassettes, the terrible news came - the duet is no more. Many did not believe: why scatter at the peak of popularity?

It turned out it was true. In 1986, at a concert in Munich, there was a quarrel between backing vocalists. Nora Balling, part-time wife of Thomas, was offended for something by two other girls, Dieter's protégé. Everyone rushed to defend their own - and the duet cracked. However, two more albums were to be recorded under the contract. Nobody was going to slam the door and then pay a penalty.

In 1987, when the obligations were fulfilled, Anders and Bohlen separated. Only then did Thomas state his version: he was tired of endless concerts and tours. He asked to take a break from the tour for several months, but Bohlen did not want to lose money.

Refusing Anders, Bohlen was sure that he would return anyway. But just in case, he created the Blue System group, with which he continued to perform. As a composer, he has collaborated with CC Ketch, Bonnie Tyler, Chris Norman and other pop artists.

But Anders did not disappear either: already in 1989 he released a solo album, and a year later he founded a recording company. He himself turned out to be a good writer, and the second album already included his songs. In the 1990s, Thomas began to write music for films and act in films, took part in dance shows and, of course, gave concerts.

The news that the Modern Talking group was together again was completely unexpected for everyone. In 1998, plump Dieter and short-haired Thomas, having revived old hits, went on tour. In five years, they released five successful albums, recorded many video clips, and even went on an experiment: they began to perform three of them, with rapper Eric Singleton. The ending was just as unexpected.

On June 21, 2003, Modern Talking gave a farewell concert in Berlin, and on the 23rd, the last album went on sale. Shortly before this, Bohlen accused Anders of "going to the left": he, they say, secretly gave solo concerts. And soon he released an autobiography, where he accused his partner of also embezzling the duet's money. Anders defended his good name in court, but it became clear that cooperation was over.

Yet fans continue to hope. In 2014, in honor of the band's 30th anniversary, a remix album was released, and Anders announced a reconciliation and a possible reunion with Bohlen. So far, the "third coming" has not happened, but Thomas's fans are already celebrating: in the summer of 2016, his solo concerts are scheduled in Russia. What if Dieter takes the stage?..

Modern Talking(With English- "modern conversation") - a German musical duo that existed from to and from to 2003, performing dance music in the style of eurodisco, europop and eurodance. The band consisted of Thomas Anders (lead vocals) and Dieter Bohlen (guitar, backing vocals, songwriting, production). It is one of the most successful bands in the history of popular music and the most successful of those created in Germany: the group's records have been sold worldwide in more than 120 million copies (as of 2003).

The duo's singles topped the charts from the mid-1980s ("You're my heart, you're my soul") to the early 2000s ("Win the Race"), and compilations topped the charts worldwide ( back for good). The band's music still finds its way into the playlists of radio stations, and their albums continue to be sold to this day. The duo made a great contribution to the development of European and (partly) Asian music.

Modern Talking's record - five No. 1 singles (in Germany) in a row and 4 multi-platinum albums in a row - has not been broken so far.

Group history [ | ]

Before the duet[ | ]

The musicians met in February 1983 within the walls of the Berlin recording company Hansa: the aspiring composer and producer Dieter Bohlen was looking for a vocalist to perform the composition Was macht das schon, a cover version of F.R. David "Pick Up The Phone", for which he wrote the German lyrics. The novice singer Thomas Anders responded to the proposal of Dieter Bohlen, who soon flew to Hamburg to start working together.

Beginning of Modern Talking [ | ]

The beginning of one of the most famous musical groups begins on October 29, 1984 when Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen released the first single Modern Talking " "("You are my heart, you are my soul"). When Thomas and Dieter were recording this song, everyone present in the studio applauded - this melody fell to their hearts so much. Initially, the single did not receive due appreciation from the audience, and only after performing on the Formel Eins program (January 21, 1985) did the duo become truly popular: the single became a super hit, taking first place first in the German charts, and then in the European charts. 60,000 records were sold daily in Germany alone.

In the wake of the group's popularity, sportswear company Adidas signed a contract with Dieter Bohlen to show their clothes in videos and at concerts.

No less popular was the next album of musicians called "" with songs " Geronimo's Cadillac"("Geronimo's Cadillac") and " ("Give me peace on earth"). Song from this album "(" Lonely Tears in Chinatown ") was released as a single in Spain, reaching number 9 there. Recording singles in the studio, Dieter Bohlen never sang high parts in the group. Instead, they were performed by Michael Scholz, Detlef Wiedeke and Rolf Köhler ( - , -).

The first breakup of the group in 1987[ | ]

With an ambitious and energetic character, Nora Balling claimed a more significant role, seeking to subjugate the creative life of the group to herself. According to the memoirs of Dieter Bohlen, "Nora could just forbid Anders to go on stage, took him on trips in the midst of recordings, disrupted filming and tours."

Against the backdrop of these contradictions, a final break occurred at a concert in Munich in 1986. The musicians decided not to upset the fans ahead of time, and only a year later, having recorded two more albums and waiting for the end of the contract, they announced the breakup of the group by mutual agreement.

Thomas Anders himself says this about the collapse:

Almost everyone believes that the duo broke up because of Nora. But in fact, I was just very tired, tired of Dieter, of our common cause and endless trips. I had absolutely no free time to meet with friends or just to be at home. I did not belong to myself at all, I belonged to our company, which used me with might and main. Unfortunately, this condition is difficult to explain. Of course, many may say: "Yes, but you did earn money, and a lot of it. And if you earn a lot of money, you need to work hard." To some extent, I agree with this formulation of the question. But if you travel three years in a row 320 days a year, live in 300 different hotels for a year, then one day you feel exhausted and empty, tired of everyone and everything. At the same time, your partner experiences completely different feelings - Dieter was always focused only on his career and success. He didn't care about my feelings at all. I only asked for a short timeout. Just 2-3 months to rest and then return to the stage again. All this is very difficult for people to understand, because it is much easier to say that the duo broke up because of the insufferable Nora. Yes, without a doubt, she was a very complex person. But after all, many women have a rather difficult character. Nora's fault is that our group broke up - 10-15%. She was by no means the main cause of our breakup.

It is curious that, having created the Blue System group even before the release of the last album (“In The Garden Of Venus”), Dieter actually competed with his main group at that time.

After the collapse [ | ]

The beginning of the reunion of the legend of the 80s was laid by a non-binding phone call from Bohlen, in which he friendly invited Anders to Hamburg. The conversation was continued in one of the fast food restaurants in Hamburg over a portion of selected fried potatoes with goulash. Thomas at first strongly doubted the relevance of the revival of the duet, but Dieter still managed to convince him.

Thus, quite unexpectedly for their fans, Modern Talking, once again joining forces, triumphantly returned to the pop scene in March 1998, performing on the popular German TV show “Wetten, dass..? "with a medley of his immortal No. 1 hits and releasing the album "Back For Good", consisting of dance remixes of old songs with the addition of four new songs: "I Will Follow You", "Don't Play With My Heart", " We Take The Chance", "Anything is Possible". Rounding out the album was the No. 1 Hit Medley, compiled from the duo's popular songs.

End of career[ | ]

Spontaneous decision, however, long pondered. There were 25,000 people there in Rostock and I told them about the end of the Modern Talking project ... If I had long discussions with the management of the record company, they would probably say to me "No, don't do it! Because in next year the band is turning 20!" I would have refused, but they would have tried to convince me like they did 75 times before. And I really wanted to stop this year. So I thought, "OK, if I say it now, 25,000 people will hear me and that will be the end of it."

Thomas Anders on the demise of Modern Talking:

We have always said that we do not want to do anything in desperation. For better or for worse, we don't want to be together anymore. We are not married and we are not Siamese twins who are inseparable from each other. So, if one of us loses interest in the music together, we have to leave.

The official reason for this difficult decision, according to Dieter, was that Thomas, without his knowledge, undertook a solo tour in the US in the summer of 2003. Back in 1987, Anders already did the same, organizing a tour without Dieter Bohlen in Eastern Europe under the banner "The Thomas Anders Show" (despite the fact that "Modern Talking" was written on the advertising posters). In 2003, posters and banners in the United States again read: "Concert by C.C. Catch and Modern Talking at the Taj Mahal", although Dieter Bohlen did not participate in that concert.

Fans of the duet believe that the unofficial reason for the end of Modern Talking's career is the drop in sales of the group's records and the desire of Dieter Bohlen to devote more time to the promotion of Germany's most popular TV show "Germany is looking for a superstar" and its members, whose records sold much better than Modern Talking itself.

During the existence of the group, more than 120 million audio media have been sold worldwide. Modern Talking is still popular in countries of Eastern Europe, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Poland, Hungary, Finland, Vietnam and other countries.

The fate of the group members[ | ]

The style of most of the songs after the duo's reunion is Europop. Modern Talking released four Latin songs - No Face No Name No Number (2000), Maria (2001), I Need You Now (2001), Mystery (2003). Blackbird (2003) refers to jazz, Angie's Heart (New Version) (1998) - club pop, We Are Children Of The World (2002) - pop rock, Juliet (2002) - advanced disco, Blinded By Your Love (1987) ), You And Me (1987) and Who Will Save The World (1987) - pop rock, Witchqueen of Eldorado (2001) and If I… (2002) - ethnic pop, When The Sky Rained Fire (2002) and Who Will Love You Like I Do (2002) - eurodance. Track The Night Is Yours - The Night Is Mine (1985) can be attributed to.

Style features 1984-1987[ | ]

Modern Talking has had several distinctive features, which distinguished them from other performers of the same style:

Theme of the songs [ | ]

Many songs by Modern Talking sing about unrequited love, about broken heart. In several tracks, Dieter Bohlen paid attention to the theme of victory ("You Can Win If You Want", "We Take The Chance", "Win the Race", "Ready For The Victory", "10 Seconds To Countdown", "TV Makes The Superstar ", "Life is too short" and partly in "Don't give up"). Also in the lyrics of Modern Talking there is a place for the theme of the future ("In 100 Years", "Who Will Save The World" and partly in "Who Will Be There"). The song "It's Christmas" is imbued with the spirit of Christmas. There is a track on the album "America" that sings about a witch queen ("Witchqueen Of Eldorado"). The song "We Are The Children of the World" is about friendship and solidarity.

Authorship of texts[ | ]

Almost all the lyrics of the band's songs were written by Dieter Bohlen, and the authorship belongs to him alone, the following tracks are exceptions: "Love Is Like A Rainbow", "For Always And Ever" (1999), "Love Is Forever" (2000), "I Need You Now" (2001), "Love To Love You" (2002) - written by Thomas Anders; "It Hurts So Good" (1999) and "I'll Never Give You Up" (1999) - co-written by Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders; "Do You wanna" (1985) - written by Dieter Bohlen, text by Mary Applegate.

How did Modern Talking founders Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen meet? Who came up with the band's name? Why did Thomas not want to sing songs on English language? How did the main feature of the group - a high voice - come about? What song brought Modern Talking worldwide fame? Why did Dieter first want to destroy the song "Cheri, Cheri Lady"? What caused the duo to break up in 1987? How was the return of Modern Talking to the European pop scene, and why did the band cease to exist?

Carier start

The history of the Modern Talking group began in 1983 with the acquaintance of Dieter Bohlen and Thomas Anders. By that time they were already experienced guys - Thomas had been singing since adolescence, and Dieter worked in show business for several years. They met through the Hansa record company, through which Dieter was looking for a vocalist to perform the song "Was macht das schon". Thomas accepted the offer and the work began.

During the year, the musicians released 5 singles on German, among which was the real hit "Wovon träumst du denn", sold in the amount of 30 thousand copies. Although the duo began to gain popularity in Germany, they remained virtually unknown in the world. Dieter wanted more. He dreamed of international recognition and understood that it could only be achieved by singing songs in English. Anders wanted to make a German-speaking career, so he rejected the partner's offer.

That Dieter was resting in Mallorca and accidentally heard the English band Fox The Fox on the radio. The soloists squealed as if cut, and it dawned on Bohlen that such a high voice is needed for the chorus of the song "My love is gone", with which he has been tormented for several days. The musician remade the composition into English and called it "You" re My Heart, You "re My Soul". They say that after recording in the studio, all those present applauded for several minutes.

The guys liked the idea with a high voice so much that it soon became their main feature. Now, in all songs, Anders' chorus will be followed by a second - high - chorus performed by Dieter and backing vocalists. It was the first, still small, triumph of the duet. In order to become real stars, it was necessary to do very little - to persuade Thomas to enter the international stage.

worldwide popularity

Thomas insistently wanted to make a German-speaking career, and it took a lot of effort for Dieter to persuade him to release a blue

l "You" re My Heart, You "re My Soul". When this was done, the question arose about the name of the group. Here, Petra's secretary made her contribution, who, having seen the posters of Modern Romance and Talk Talk, suggested the name Modern Talking. And the decision was made.

The single was released in the autumn of 1984, but for a long time it was gathering dust on the shelves. Bohlen believed that the reason for this was a completely stupid cover, which depicted a patent leather boot and sneakers. Anders, still in doubt, did not want to show his face, and this, according to his partner, could benefit sales.

Everything changed in January 1985 when Modern Talking performed on the TV program "Formel Eins". The single rushed to the top of the charts until it topped the German hit parade. Continental Europe fell next to the duo's feet. On the wave of success, Bohlen and Anders recorded another hit "You Can Win, If You Want", and soon - the debut album "The First Album" (1985). In to the world

That's how "Tokingomania" began.

In the same 1985, another famous song saw the light - "Cheri, Cheri Lady". It's scary to think, but at first Dieter wanted to throw it in the trash. He felt that it was too simple and would not please the audience. Thomas persuaded his partner to record the song, unaware of the significance it would have for the band's work. The song about "Sweet Lady" became a worldwide hit and made Modern Talking the kings of the European pop scene.

Critics have repeatedly reproached the duo for a simple melody and weak lyrics, but thanks to such music, the group has achieved great success. Bohlen - the author of music and almost all texts - once said that it is a thousand times more difficult to make a melody on three chords, which the whole of Europe will then sing, than a piece of music with 86 thousand chords for connoisseurs. And in this he was right. People needed not heavy philosophical compositions, but light, fast, dance songs.

for some time, a video was filmed for the song "Cheri, Cheri Lady". It was filmed in the family castle of Thomas's wife Nora. She actively took part in the filming - she gave directing instructions, did make-up to the musicians. Subsequently, Nora's interference in the affairs of the group will be one of the reasons for the collapse of Modern Talking. But while the incendiary disco duo reveled in the rays of glory. In 1985, the popularity of Modern Talking reached the USSR, and in 1986, with the release of the album "Ready For Romance", England and Canada were conquered.

No less popular was the album "In The Middle Of Nowhere" (1986), which included such hits as "Give Me Peace On Earth" and "Geronimo's Cadillac". Even then, disagreements began to arise between the duet members. At the end of 1986 Thomas and Dieter finally quarreled, not coming to an agreement about the executive composition, which included backing vocalists.By the way, one of Anders' backing vocalists was his wife Nora, who, according to the press, played the decisive role

ol in conflict.

The musicians decided not to upset the fans ahead of time, and only a year later, having recorded two more albums and waiting for the end of the contract, they announced the breakup of the group. It was a hard blow for Modern Talking fans and a big loss for European pop music.

Return and departure

After the collapse of Modern Talking, Thomas and Dieter took up solo projects, but neither of them achieved great success. In 1998, unexpectedly for everyone, the return of Modern Talking was announced on world stage. According to Bohlen, he and Thomas had been negotiating a reunion for a long time, but they carefully concealed this from journalists.

Modern Talking returned to the pop scene with a real triumph, releasing the album "Back For Good" (1998). Although it contained only four new songs, it was certified four times platinum in Germany and sold 26 million copies worldwide.

From 1999 to 2003, Modern Talking released five new albums, again

rising to the top of popularity. Contrary to all expectations, their success was an order of magnitude higher than the success of the 80s. This is attributed to the sudden appearance of the duo and interesting cover versions of songs that were sung with pop stars.

Having suddenly appeared on the European pop scene, Modern Talking just as suddenly left. In 2003, the musicians announced that the group was ceasing to exist. On June 21, a farewell concert of the duet took place in Berlin, which was attended by 13 thousand spectators. After the concert, Dieter addressed the audience, saying that times are changing, and no one knows what will happen tomorrow. Thomas promised that with the end of Modern Talking, his voice would not disappear.

Last words musicians give hope that Modern Talking will still please fans. From the day they farewell concert 11 years have passed - exactly how long their first break lasted. Are Anders and Bohlen preparing a surprise? Everything is possible, because as Dieter said, no one knows what will happen tomorrow

What is the disco of the 90s without legendary band Modern Talking? It was they who became the idols of the youth of that time. Most of the guys, teenagers, students, spent their last money on their records. Their songs were played at all discos and parties, and every second young man dreamed of meeting his idols.

About performers

Thomas Andres - stage name musician Bernd Weidung. He is with early childhood was creative child. Sang in the choir, played the piano, attended lessons musical notation V music school. Bernd actively participated in school competitions and festivals, sent applications for events of the city and international scale, and almost everywhere took top places. He had to take a pseudonym for the reason that his own name was too difficult to remember and pronounce.

Dieter Bohlen is the second member of the duet, a well-known composer and songwriter. At the time of his acquaintance with Thomas, he was actively looking for a talented performer of his compositions, as he alone could not cope with complex two-voice arrangements. About a dozen songs in German were immediately recorded in Bohlen's studio. From the release of the very first cassettes, the group became popular in Germany. Their fans filled the full halls, and the concerts were held on huge venues.

creative way

But young people quickly realized that German records are the ceiling of their popularity, and they can only reach the international level with songs in English. And they are actively engaged in this work.

The official name Modern Talking was born in the course of work, in 1984. The guys immediately began to work on English texts and a year later they released their first singles. After the release of the first song, the artists instantly became popular all over the world.

In the USSR, the group was rapidly gaining popularity. Their hits sounded in every city, at every disco. Dieter Bohlen was even recognized as a hero of the youth of the Union.

During the year of its existence, the duo won more than 10 professional awards and was recognized as the most popular in the world. Their compositions were sold in millions of copies, but still not enough for everyone who wanted to buy the coveted records. But the duet was not destined to last long. Already in 1987 it broke up. Young people could not decide which of them was better and more talented, each tried to win success over to his side. There was a serious question regarding the copyright of the songs. Bohlen was sure that he was the only "master" of hits.

It turns out there was another point of contention - this is Thomas's wife. Nora wanted to become the third soloist, and at the same time the director of the group and to fully resolve all issues related to the work of Modern Talking.

For some time, the artists tried to perform solo, regularly swearing in the presence of journalists and other stars.

The duo tried to reunite in 1998, but lasted another 5 years and left the stage completely.

Biography of Thomas Anders.

Thomas Anders was born on March 1, 1963. in the small village of Merze (two kilometers from Münstermaifeld and twenty kilometers from Koblenz.) The real name of the singer is Bernd Weidung. Almost all his life (excluding childhood, youth and tours) he lived in the city of Koblenz. After the first collapse of Modern Talking, he often lived in America, in Los Angeles.
Bernd dreamed of becoming a singer since childhood, he played the piano for about 13 years, he liked to spend more time listening to music than walking with his peers. He loved to sing, and since his mother ran a small shop in Mertz, he would occasionally speak to a sales representative who would come by once a week to arrange deliveries. Bernd recalled: “Standing in front of a mirror and practicing to be a singer, I imagined all the time that I was performing on a large concert stage or in front of a television audience, and my music brought tears to the eyes of thousands of people.” At Christmas, he sang songs for all the guests in the house, for which he received a chocolate bar and a bag of chips. He really liked it, because not only did he do what he liked, but he also got something good for it.
As a young man, Bernd performed at the holidays, sang by invitation at the evenings. Started making some money. Since he had to travel to the city to school, he used to go home by taxi instead of by bus. At home they scolded him for this, but he said that it was still an hour before the bus. He was not a very sociable person, although in good relations with classmates. For example, if a class canceled a lesson, he did not like to sit on mats and drink brewed tea. He walked in the city to a cafe, and ordered himself a delicious coffee with cream. To which his father said that with such requests he would have to earn a lot in life. Bernd also disliked PE lessons. Especially playing football.

After Bernd grew up, he worked part-time as a bartender's assistant. He also managed to study at the University, where he studied journalism and musicology, but decided to take a break to focus on his career as a singer. He participated in various competitions: on radio, on television. After one of his performances on TV, where he was underestimated, Bernd was very upset, but nevertheless, he was noticed by the record company and producer Daniel David. In 1980, his first single "Judy" was released. Bernd planned to sing in German. He was asked to change his name to something more easily pronounced and memorable. Tommy was suggested as the name, but Bernd insisted on Thomas. The head of their company had the surname Anders. Thus, they quickly came up with a surname, and the producer also hoped that this surname could somehow help them in the future. Thomas Anders has singles, then an album. He appears on TV several times, gives concerts.
By the way, Thomas said that even on his credit cards there is his pseudonym Thomas Anders. Because once he was paying at the hotel with a card with his real name Bernd Weidung, and the employee called the police, saying that she did not know what to do, since Thomas Anders was paying with other people's cards. (But in family photos with his first wife Nora, you can see the name Bernd on his mug.) Mom also calls the singer Bernd. However, he says that he does not separate himself as Bernd or Thomas, that he is alone everywhere.

Shortly after recording his first German-language singles, Thomas meets his future wife, Nora Isabelle Balling. Nora was from a very wealthy family, and she was introduced to Thomas by her good friend, apparently wanting to somehow brag about their acquaintances. According to Nora, when she saw Thomas, she thought he was very cute, but so small. In fact, Nora is almost a head taller than Thomas, but this did not interfere with this beautiful couple. Nora had only her mother alive. She herself looked like her father, unlike her sisters, who were brunettes. Nora trained as a makeup artist and worked as a fashion model. She advertised jewelry, watches, perfumes. After a year of illness, her mother died. The sisters had their own lives for a long time and Nora lived completely alone in her penthouse in Koblenz. Soon Thomas and Nora got married. Nora was twenty and Thomas twenty-one. And just a few months later, Thomas recorded his first hit “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul” as part of the Modern Talking group.

Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen.

Thomas was once approached to collaborate with songwriter and producer Dieter Bohlen, who worked for the Hansa label. Together they record several songs in German.
Dieter, although he did not have a musical education, learned to play the guitar himself from early childhood. He somehow went to one lesson, but since he was left-handed, he did not take anything useful for himself out of it. He mastered the instrument himself, and was also fond of playing the synthesizer. During his studies in economics, where his parents sent him, he earned money by playing in clubs, creating several groups. His parents ran their own small building materials business. But often there were unprofitable times, and parents generally developed independence in Dieter. He never sat without work, although, for example, he did not like to do housework, as a rule, this was done by the girl who lived with him, later his wife, etc. Dieter did not differ in constancy. Although it should be noted that he always took care of his children, of whom he has three from his first marriage and recently another baby was born in a new family, and that his family had a decent home, even when he still did not earn much. According to him, he never approached the kitchen. This is one of his opposites with Thomas, because Thomas loves to cook. With age, it became one of his small hobbies.
Dieter liked to say that if he removed the notes from the piano of his girlfriend, then she could not play anything. While he could calmly. This is certainly neither a plus nor a minus. The fact is that Dieter Bohlen is, first of all, an excellent songwriter, he is a melodist. And not everyone who is good with tools has musical education are able to compose songs. He composes songs directly, and if it is very necessary, he can arrange something, play some instruments, he is already a professional when recording it. Although, basically, Dieter was engaged in the song from beginning to end - that is, he recorded, worked on the arrangement.

When Dieter graduated from the University, he had one prospect, to work in a small company with his father. But he went to that record company, which invariably refused him letters with his demo and by some miracle, showing diplomas and it's hard to imagine that he got a job. He wrote songs and offered them to famous or more or less famous performers, but often also received a refusal. He considered that the managers simply did not pass them on and tried to meet himself. Over time, he made progress. He could already make a pretty good living on copyrights from songs that were popular. Dieter always dreamed of international success, and therefore believed that it was necessary to write songs in English.
Dieter liked Thomas's voice very much. He said the following: “There was so much feeling in his voice, so much sweet honey that, if desired, they could be spread on toast. My skin has gone cold. This was probably the only time in my life when I met a performer with a really good voice. The main thing in it was not volume, not strength, but the charm of shades.”

Modern Talking - 80s.
When Dieter began working with Thomas Anders, and they still had time after recording the main songs in German, Dieter invited him to perform the song “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul.” Thomas studied English at school and in general he certainly has an excellent pronunciation. He listened to the song several times, read the lyrics and wrote it down fairly quickly.

This song was originally called “My love is gone.” Dieter kept thinking about what to add to the chorus of this song to make it better. He said the following: “It dawned on me during the holidays, when I was sunbathing on Paguero beach. The English band "Fox The Fox" rumbled through the speakers, so that the eardrums burst. In one song, they squeaked in the chorus in falsetto, high-high, in C minor. And inspiration descended on me, insight descended. The idea of a new brilliant song. I decided that the chorus from "My love is gone" should be performed by the high voices of the castrati, it should be echoed. This created a completely new exotic sound, nothing to do with boring incomprehensible songs. And I finally had a reason to appear on stage and sing along with the performer. For squealing like a eunuch's voice has been my specialty since my student days, since the time of Marianne Rosenberg. “ Dieter did not have outstanding vocal abilities, but in terms of such singing he was, of course, a specialist. His vocals were overdubbed many times during recording, and as a result, Thomas's singing turned out to be the hallmark of the Modern Talking sound.
None of them could have imagined that the song “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul” would become so popular. This song changed their whole life. She took the first lines in the charts in twelve countries, was a hit in Spain, Italy, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Finland, Russia and many other countries. The song hit high places in Japan, on the African continent. The single sold eight million copies.
The Hansa label chief originally wanted to name the group “Turbo Diesel.” But Dieter immediately imagined a rumbling tractor and his father's construction site. They argued for a long time until the head secretary walked over to the "Top Fifty" poster hanging in the corner. There were some bands on the charts called "Talk Talk" and "Modern Romance" and she suggested, "I would call the band Modern Talking."

Dieter was very worried about whether he would be able to write another hit like “You’re My Heart, You’re My Soul.” He said that he composed, sent half to the trash, while he was constantly called that there were some performances of the group, when there would be new demos and so on. However, he wrote the second hit “You Can Win, If You Want” (“You can win if you want”), which, despite the story of a girl with difficulties in the family, of course, reflects his anguish at that time. .
The hit "Cheri, Cheri Lady" saw the light in many respects thanks to Thomas. Dieter rejected this song, considering it too simple, but Thomas said that it was just a great song and he rejected it in vain. And the song became, in fact, a hit. Here is what Thomas said about their collaboration: “For the new album, Dieter always sent me 40-50 songs, of which I chose the ones I liked, about 20. Of these, Dieter chose 12-13, which I then recorded in the studio. Dieter sent me tape cassettes with demo songs home (such cassettes have long become a legend from the past). The cassettes contained computer-generated drums and a keyboard track. If he had time, perhaps also a bass line. Everything else was a howl of his voice, or just the words “there should be a guitar solo here.”

Despite the fact that the group lasted only three years, and later Thomas and Dieter went solo, Modern Talking released six very popular albums. That is, two albums a year were released. Of course, largely due to the incredible performance and perseverance of Dieter. At the same time, he still managed to perform on TV and concerts with Thomas, give interviews - and the schedule was very tight. When the group in 1985. in one program, all their “gold” and “platinum” were awarded for sold albums and singles, there were about 50 awards.
I had a Modern Talking record “Let's talk about love” as a child. This was their second album. And I can't say that I liked the voice or the music more. I really liked everything together. I had records of Abba, the Hungarian singer Judith, the compilation “Super Hits” (hits “Self-control”, “Girl just want yo have fun”, etc.) When I wanted to listen to Modern Talking, for me it was an unusual group, with their unique sound. There was something light, magical and romantic in this music. I loved listening to them while drawing my childhood “masterpieces”. Even when I listened to this record, sometimes for some reason I imagined some beautiful house on a rocky shore, or which was hiding behind lianas and rough vegetation. It never seemed to me that those who perform these songs are very happy. The songs were sometimes with light notes of sadness. On reverse side The record included a photo of the band members. Of course, I did not single out anyone, it was just interesting to see how those who sing the songs on the record look like. And for some reason, I correctly decided which voice belongs to whom in the songs. When I grew up, the group had already broken up by that time. I didn't get much information about the work of Thomas Anders or Dieter Bohlen. I had pen pals who liked, among other things, this group. I remember how the group came together. Then I sometimes wrote articles for several newspapers. And I was asked by an acquaintance to write a fictional article about Modern Talking related to their tour in Russia, after I showed him one Russian newspaper, where there were a lot of fabricated articles. He just wanted to play a joke on a familiar fan of the group. But it was not my style, and I refused, although to this day I communicate with this person.

Even before the second reunion of the group, I accidentally stumbled on some TV program about them somewhere in the year 97-98. There were excerpts from the clips, Thomas with a chain with a Nora pendant. I was very surprised by the appearance of young Thomas, I noted that he looks very good and stylish and had no doubt that he had many admirers at that time. The program constantly talked about Nora, but either I listened inattentively, or that’s how everything was presented. But then it seemed to me that Nora was just some kind of woman who did not step back from Thomas and just wanted to become famous herself and wanted to be the third member of the group.
Of course, I like the old hits of the group, a number of solo songs by Thomas. I liked the group's comeback because it was nice to hear familiar melodies that brought back a lot of memories, but rap in this case seemed superfluous. On the other hand, then there was only the option of creating remixes of old hits. I really liked a few new songs that were in frequent rotation, but a lot for me, format things, or something.
My favorite songs of the band are “Cheri, Cheri Lady” (the video is also very good), “You Can Win If You Want”, “Jet Airliner”, “Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. for Love)”, “Geronimo’s Cadillac”. After the reunion, my favorites are “Juliet”, “Sexy sexy love,” “After your love is gone”, “You’re not Lisa”, “Mrs. robota.”
In the new albums of the group, in addition to dance hits, you can also find slow ballads with piano accompaniment, several songs in the Spanish style, for example, such as “Mystery”, “Maria”, “No face, no name, no number.” In my opinion the most best album with new songs after the group's second reunion is "Year of the dragon."
I am sorry that the group did not develop truly friendly relations. But of course I agree that the success of Modern Talking is a combination of the talent of both. Perhaps Dieter wanted more recognition. In the group in the 80s, for the uninitiated, he actually looked like just a member of it. Not everyone knew that he writes all the music. On the other hand, if he remained just a songwriter, then no one would know even more about him. After all, his performance on stage with Thomas was not originally planned.

After the first breakup of the group, Dieter was initially engaged in producing. He wrote a very successful song for Chris Norman "Midnight lady", which sounded in the popular TV series Tatort (Commissioner Szymanski), once again helped remind Bonnie Tyler of himself. Dieter also wrote songs and produced C. C. Catch (Caroline Katharina Müller). Here is what he wrote about her in his memoirs: “It turned out that although Carolina is not Maria Callas, she can perfectly sing with aspiration “hhh ...”. If she sang “I love you”, it sounded more like “Aihai lahav yuuhuu”, as if she was singing in Tyrolean. There was something unique about her, and originality in our environment is much more important than a good voice. And I decided to give her a chance.” Several songs performed by C.C. Catch are once-rejected songs for Modern Talking. For example, the song "I Can Lose My Heart Tonight", which was canceled because they thought that it would not rise above the twentieth place in the charts. Of course, you can blame Dieter for the fact that he was so worried about the charts. But at the same time, you need to have a unique talent in order to manage to hit the bull's-eye so often. For many, even with a strong desire, this will not work out, so this is a combination of skill, good knowledge and understanding of musical cuisine. Of course, if he did some instrumental music, or jazz, his constant talk about the charts might have alerted. But since he is a producer and works in the field of popular music and show business, he basically does what he does, but at the same time he is quite original and talented. Moreover, he speaks quite honestly with time, when he produces a person with a good voice, and when, with a not very good one, because he needs to pay a loan for a house.
Subsequently, C. C. Catch, according to Dieter, fell ill with star fever, stopped preparing for performances, and so on, and left for another company. But albums recorded with other producers no longer had such success.
Later, Dieter Bohlen created the group “Blue system.” Initially, they did not want to see him on stage after the collapse of Modern Talking, but only as a producer. This offended him greatly. Once he nevertheless came to the head of the label and began to insist that he wanted to create his own group. He was asked what the name would be and since he didn't expect such a quick agreement, he looked at the label of his denim jacket and said "Blue system". The group lasted from 1987 to 1998 and released 13 fairly successful albums during this time.

Some reflections on Thomas Anders during the 80s and in general. Of course, I am amazed by his decency. It would seem an attractive young man, a world star, millions of fans and such devotion to his wife. This is admirable. And in principle, an attractive appearance, in addition to natural data, is also the efforts of Nora, the first wife, who was a make-up artist-stylist by education. Thomas' tanned look, chic hair, clothes that still look pretty good today. He looked like a sophisticated, romantic aesthete.
I was very surprised by the words of Thomas that someone did not understand this kind of him, the sayings of some journalists. In my opinion, this look of him was also, in fact, the key to the success of the group, in addition to good vocals and song melodies. Although I was amused by the story in the biography of Thomas Anders by his authorship about how he ordered a conditioner for Nora at the hotel, and the employee mistook him for Nora. I just also had cases when I was in the company of friends and “girls” could turn to us, although there were not only girls there. It amused me too.
I understand, for example, some of us can find fault with a person’s hairstyle, simply because you need to cling to something. As a rule, these are narrow-minded people and often not very sober. But it seemed to me that Germany in the 80s was a completely civilized country. And here opens the banal reason for some articles about Thomas, and his appearance and, in general, the rejection of someone else's individuality. Banal envy. I'm not saying that one or the other is better. appearance. People don't have to look the same.

When the group became popular, Thomas's wife Nora was at first very carried away by all this turmoil, and according to the singer it was good for her, as she was distracted from the unhappy events in her own life. But then, of course, Nora became jealous, noticing how popular her husband was. Here I have two feelings. On the one hand, Thomas is a person who is very constant, unlike Dieter, and jealousy was unnecessary. On the other hand, for Nora, Thomas was still practically the only close person at that time. In addition, she was still very young and not very experienced. Many had the impression that Nora put on a chain with her name on Thomas, made him also get married in the church, did some joint photo shoots. But Thomas himself said that she did not force him to do anything, that she was sometimes overly jealous, but she did not have all that terrible that was attributed to her. And after watching several programs of that time with her participation, I did not have an opinion about her as some kind of self-confident, impudent woman. She seemed at times a little shy and, most importantly, sincere. To this, of course, you can add good taste, a spectacular figure and appearance.

For some reason, when I first saw Thomas with the “Nora” chain, I had thoughts that the person apparently loves this Nora very much and this aroused respect. Of course, in terms of promotions, given the large number of female fans, it was not a profitable venture. But it was fair though. If a person likes to sing, he has an attractive appearance, now he should take a vow of celibacy. There was simply some conflict between who Thomas Anders was in life and how his group was promoted. Nora just needed to be more confident in herself, and I have no doubt that Thomas himself would talk about her and take pictures and stuff, like he does now with his second wife Claudia, and she probably doesn’t really want to do this.
And at the same time, I want to note that the group actually has enough male fans. For example, my father loved to listen to this group, our family friends could play their songs in the car all day long, and I myself had several acquaintances whose favorite singer was Thomas.

Causes of the collapse of Modern Talking.

I happened to watch a concert of Thomas Anders in Chile, where he sings the songs of the group, but without Dieter and in a new image. Backing vocals by his first wife Nora and her girlfriend. And frankly, they look good. Another thing is that only Thomas and Dieter sang in the group. And of course, for the purposes of marketing the company, it is beneficial that there are no chains with Nora, that she is not on stage. Of course, if she was older, I think she would behave smarter. Because everything depends on the person, and not on his popularity. Dieter, as he was fickle from adolescence, remained the same, and Thomas was very honest man and responsible, and so he always behaved. If he married early enough, at 21, before his career in the band, then it's not just that. It seems to me that Nora also needed some serious occupation, she needed to continue to try to work as a model.
It cannot be said that Nora came from one negative for the group. Look at Dieter, who did not understand clothes and wore clothes provided for free by Adidas for advertising. And look at Thomas, who has everything in size, fashionable for those times. He himself is tanned, his hair is tinted, well styled, his lips are smeared with gloss. In addition to natural data, there is also the merit of Nora, who was Thomas's stylist and make-up artist. Her hand is visible even in the way she sometimes lined Thomas' eyes, as well as herself. Just different people they can do it differently.
In general, reading books, interviews, it is difficult, so to speak, to make a final verdict regarding the first breakup of the group. Everyone says one thing first, then another. It seems to me that Dieter's key phrase was that, they say, Nora said: “My Thomas in the video will not go with you in the car, but with me. “And he was outraged, they say, how it is for her when I opened it to the world. He was not in charge, he could not command. It's just that Dieter is not used to taking anyone seriously. And Nora too. And Thomas took a neutral position. All of course, due to the fact that they were still inexperienced, Nora did not have an occupation to her liking, and Dieter was not used to it when someone disagrees with him. In addition, Thomas himself believed that he just needed to take a break for a couple of months after continuous touring. Maybe Nora would calm down. During this time, Dieter would have slowly composed new songs. But Dieter was so tired of the confrontation with Nora, and the fact that Thomas supports her, that quarrels between them began to negatively set some fans and spectators against the group that he decided to close the group. At the same time, it is clear that Nora did not fit into the concept of the group. It's just that Dieter needed to find something to do for Nora. But he, of course, was not used to working with someone, for the sake of someone to take a steam bath, if it was not a singer.
I also read books written by Dieter Bohlen. Of course with Thomas they are very different in character. Thomas is constant, balanced, Dieter is quick-tempered, straightforward, not constant. At first, of course, it interfered with the fact that Thomas was still very young, like his first wife. They did not understand that such success could be temporary, that they needed to work. And Dieter understood this well, since in his life he often had to show independence. And he went to this success for many years.

And in general, in fact, working together in creativity is not so easy as it seems. You need to be able to find compromises, and when, in fact, outsiders regarding creativity are connected to this, this does not lead to good.
Regarding the second collapse of Modern Talking, of course, Dieter went too far in his second book. It is felt that he is deliberately trying to slander Thomas. Because before that he wrote about the same things differently. Of course, he was unhappy with the fact that they never became friends even a little. As I understand it, Dieter did not like that Thomas did not devote as much time to the group as he did. But here, too, you sometimes need to understand that a singer is a singer in order to sing, look good and be photographed, for example. He still will not pore over the song as much as the author.
I believe that there is nothing good or bad in what happened. Everything happened the way it should have. It is not a fact that it would be better if, for example, Nora had a different character or behaved differently. I do not believe that anyone is specifically to blame for the first breakup of the group. Everyone somehow put an effort into it, to the fact that the group went to this. Blame not understanding each other and unwillingness to compromise, negotiate. In any case, the group recorded six excellent albums, many hits - it's not enough.

Solo career of Thomas Anders.

Thomas continues to record solo albums. He wanted to move away from the image he had in the band. He began to collect his hair in a ponytail, wearing ripped jeans. The albums were not as successful as the Modern Talking records, although they are quite good and there are some very strong songs. And the reason is, of course, obvious. Firstly, the lack of more rhythmic songs, and secondly, such a hit-maker as Dieter is not lying around on every corner. Of course, many scold Dieter for being too simple in the songs. But still there is a certain style of the group and it is musically difficult to copy. In addition, you need to understand the conditions in which Dieter worked. His first contract was that he had to write more than thirty songs in a month and at the same time they hung charts in front of his nose and said, learn how to work.
In general, Thomas' solo albums before the second resumption of Modern Talking are beautiful melodic pop songs, ballads. There is a whole album Spanish Barcos de Cristal. A very beautiful song of the same name, which sounded like the main song in an Argentine TV series.
When I started listening to Thomas' album “Strong” (2010) I initially had a bit of a prejudice, based on what I heard most often from him. I thought that there would be something overly commercial or something in the spirit of “Why do you cry”. The last one of course good song, but as it turned out on the album, it is far from the best. But I liked the album. I included 70 percent in one of my playlists. The album contains romantic songs, sometimes melancholy, which distinguishes it more from the general mood of others. solo albums singer, light dance melodies. It's nice that they worked on the album in Russia, so to speak, they didn't lose face.
My sympathy for the work of Thomas Anders is explained, of course, not only by the fact that from the age of 5 to the age of 10 I listened to the Modern Talking album “Let's talk about love” on the disc. After all, the artist also grows up, in some ways he can change. In addition, I liked not only the voice in the album, but also, first of all, the music. It's just that Thomas Anders grew up in the 80s, and I also had a lot of favorite bands that dawned at that time, so it's natural that I might like the songs that this famous singer chooses to perform.
Of course, it cannot be said that Thomas has a very strong voice by general standards, but in the genre that he performs, he has a voice completely. And he has a very beautiful sound and sensual. This is his highlight. Thomas' voice is immediately recognizable, you can't confuse him with anyone, he is special. And this is really important and says a lot. In addition, of course, a positive image and the same personal qualities also played a significant role.
I also really liked the song-single “Ibiza Baba Baya” from 2008, very beautiful melody, sound, beautifully sung. From Thomas' early solo albums, I really liked the songs “The sweet hello, the sad goodbye” (especially), “You are my life,” “ Will you let me know,” “Don’t say you love me,” “Road to higher love,” “South of love” and quite a few songs on the Spanish-language album.

I think that Thomas didn't need to spend so much time in Los Angeles and look for some songwriters there. I understand that after the breakup of the group, he wanted peace and quiet. But while he was abroad, Dieter established, figuratively speaking, connections at home. In addition, I think Thomas did not need to change his image, or at least not immediately. He successfully changed it. But by doing so, he showed that “Modern Talking” is in the past, he has become different. And you can say he tried to start all over again. What for? It was necessary to continue. The lonely abandoned vocalist from “Modern Talking”, who still looks sophisticated in contrast to Dieter and sings romantic songs, he is gradually growing up and changing his image. I just think they changed their image very abruptly.
Nora initially went on tour with Thomas, but gradually she realized that it was not so easy. Especially the tour in Russia. She increasingly lived in Los Angeles, where she and Thomas bought a house. They had Nora's penthouse in Koblenz and an apartment in Berlin. Subsequently, they bought a large luxury house near Koblenz, and sold Nora's penthouse and apartment in Berlin. But Nora still lived more in Los Angeles. She worked a little in a travel company, although of course Thomas provided for himself and her in the future. They were married for fifteen years, although Thomas says that they actually lived as a family for about six years. Simply, according to him, he was frightened by red tape with papers and there was no need for a divorce.
Nora probably did not want to return to Germany, because she felt some guilt behind herself that by some actions she somehow interfered with Thomas's career and realized that it was not as easy as she imagined without Dieter. Perhaps she was simply more interested in Los Angeles. For one Thomas, the house in Germany was too big, and they decided to sell it and he bought himself a penthouse in Koblenz. At first, she and Nora went to each other, worried, parting, but gradually they began to live, unfortunately, different lives. It's a pity that such beautiful love could not stand the difficulties and so ended.
Thomas sometimes gave concerts, his recordings enjoyed some success abroad, but in Germany he was stubbornly ignored. Well, there is still a saying “there is no prophet in his own country.” In general, I noticed even from the articles that some German journalists are less respectful in articles to the group than foreign ones. Although they should be proud that a group from their country is known all over the world and entered the history of popular music. But nothing human is alien to journalists either ...

Modern Talking is back.

Thomas and his friends organized a holiday preparation company, hosted the “Loveline” program on the radio from 22.00 to midnight, and sometimes gave concerts. Soon he meets Claudia. He and his friends liked to sit in the cafe in the evening. He knew almost all the visitors, when he suddenly saw a pretty unfamiliar woman at the next table. He began to ask his friends who she was. Resourceful friends began to approach Claudia as if inadvertently and try to start a conversation, and one even brought a flower, they say, it is from Thomas. Claudia said to Thomas: “Are you always this indecisive?” She found out who he was, but in Koblenz, Thomas was treated “more calmly”, he was a more familiar person there.

Claudia worked as a secretary in a construction company, she also had a relationship with a man. They were just friends with Thomas for several months. Thomas, of course, was upset by this, but he decided to wait for Claudia's previous relationship to end on its own and only then do something. Claudia could cry for hours to Thomas, and he listened to her attentively. As a result, when Claudia was left alone, she realized that she loved Thomas. She said that one day she dropped in on him for 15 minutes, and he cooked her a chic dinner and sang songs, accompanying himself on the piano. In the end, she went home only at four o'clock. Her parents did not take Thomas seriously at first. It was believed that Claudia was just a toy for him, and besides, he was still officially married.
Thomas and Nora divorced. Nora's too new family and she no longer wants to be a public person. They maintained a respectful attitude towards each other. Thomas says that, of course, Nora cannot be completely deleted from his biography, since they have been together for many years. However, Nora once sued Thomas over his autobiography. They just had an agreement not to disclose the details of their life together. Although, in fact, he did not reveal much, and compared to Dieter's books, one can say that he wrote almost nothing at all.
Once Thomas received an offer to renew the Modern Talking group. He doubted for a very long time, but since Dieter also agreed, he decided that he needed to try. He thought that they were older and everything would be different. Of course, he was worried that their return would not be a failure.

Initially, Dieter wanted to just record new songs, but the label advised them to first make new arrangements of their old hits. Nobody expected such a successful comeback of Modern Talking. Record sales even surpassed their initial success in the 80s. Of course, many people were pleased to remember their past, listen to their favorite songs again, and new fans pulled themselves up. And in general, something original and at the same time memorable is missing and missing in the music. As Thomas rightly said, there are so many channels now that they all hastily need to sculpt some stars, twist them. And in his time there were not so many of them. As a result, quantity began to dominate over quality.

Comeback was very successful. The group released seven albums in five years, shot new videos, gave many concerts. Claudia and Thomas got married and had a son, Alexander. Dieter had an incomprehensible relationship: Naddel, Verona, Estefania. These are the ones whose names were widely known. They wrote that someone made a career thanks to the name of Dieter. Maybe I'm reading some wrong magazines, but to be honest, I only recognized all these names when I read Dieter Bohlen's book. I remember Naddel from a photo in a magazine, in 2000, where she and Dieter are in a train compartment during concerts in Russia.
Dieter was invited to do the show "Germany is looking for a superstar", where artists were cooked from talented and not very talented guys and he gradually lost interest in "Modern Talking", and of course he again lacked something in the group. It seems to me that at that time he was more impressed by his own success than joint success. But be that as it may, the main thing is that both Thomas Anders and Dieter Bohlen together really wrote their chapter in the history of music, that they delight fans with their solo work and will continue to delight.
