The Kostroma Theological Seminary was founded at the Ipatiev Monastery in 1747 by the Kostroma bishop, an outstanding theologian Sylvester (Kulyabka). During the existence of the seminary, many prominent figures of the Russian Orthodox Church emerged from its walls: metropolitans, archbishops, rectors of Theological Academies and seminaries, theologians, church historians, educators, a huge number of ordinary ministers of the Church - city and rural priests. (A diagram depicting a branchy tree growing from the seminary building, on the branches of which the names of its most famous graduates are indicated). Along with the main subjects: liturgics, homiletics, theology, Holy Scripture, church singing, icon painting, church history, seminarians studied Latin, Greek, Hebrew, German and French, civil history, philosophy, literature, mathematics, psychology, logic. The fundamental library was considered one of the richest in the Kostroma region. Since 1887, an exemplary parochial school operated at the seminary; the choir of the theological seminary was considered one of the best in the diocese. The seminary was the center of diocesan life: diocesan congresses of the clergy and meetings of the Church Historical Society were held here. The seminary was visited by prominent figures of the Church who came to Kostroma. (On October 5, 1902, the seminary hosted Archpriest John of Kronstadt). In July 1918, the seminary was closed. Many teachers and graduates suffered martyrdom in camps and prisons during Soviet times.
The revival of the seminary began as a result of the warming of church-state relations after perestroika, thanks to the merits of Archbishop of Kostroma and Galich Alexander (Mogilev), appointed on September 1, 1989 to the Kostroma department. 1 Oct. 1990 At the Cathedral Church of the Resurrection of Christ on N. Debra, a diocesan school was opened - a prototype of the future seminary. The rector of the school was Archpriest Alexander Androsov, a graduate of the Leningrad Theological Academy in 1984, under whose leadership the first years of the formation of the school passed. (since 1996, Alexander Androsov has been working in the representative office of the Russian Orthodox Church in the USA). In 1991 The religious school was located in the building of the Epiphany-Anastasia Convent (former refectory building). On July 17, 1996, by the decision of His Holiness the Patriarch and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church, the school was transformed into a seminary. Its first rector was Archimandrite Gennady (Gogolev), a graduate of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy in 1994. The basis of the educational process in the seminary is the programs adopted at the St. Petersburg Theological Seminary and Academy: dogmatic, basic, moral and comparative theology, liturgics, history of the Russian Church, general church history, history of Local Churches, history of Russia, homiletics, practical guidance for pastors, philosophy, church singing, catechism, biblical history, church local history, Church Slavonic, ancient Greek, Latin, English, Russian, logic. But there are also special disciplines: the course of Russian literature is taught by a well-known throughout Russia, Kostroma, professor Yu.V.Lebedev. Since 2000 a pedagogy course was introduced. The temple of St. St. is included in the seminary. Alexy, man of God. (Katushechnaya st., 14, contact phone: 55-95-73) There are currently 65 students studying in the pastoral department, and 25 students in the regency department. There are 40 teachers, of which 4 are candidates of theology.
