Angel Sophia Day

From the ancient Greek language - wise. In Judaic and Christian religious and mythological concepts - the personified wisdom of God (cf. “philosophy” - wisdom, “sophists” - followers of the Greek philosophical school). The capital of Bulgaria is called Sofia after the main temple in honor of St. Sofia.

Sophia has an innate sense of herself as naturally superior to those around her - not by her personal merits, but by her very birth. This can probably be compared with the self-awareness of crowned heads, who can think very modestly about themselves, be aware of their shortcomings, be easy to use and helpful, and yet feel themselves separated from other people by a special kind of natural power.

This self-awareness of Sophia as power is so alive and bright in her that any non-recognition of her power by those around her causes an internal protest, but not because of hurt pride or unsatisfied vanity, but as some kind of untruth, as a distortion of the proper order. Hence the impression of pride that Sophia often makes on those who are not thoughtful enough.

About choosing a name day

A person who goes to be baptized at a conscious age chooses a new name for himself. It may be the same as the name on your passport, or it may be different. The only requirement is that the name be listed in the calendar, that is, it belongs to one of the saints of the church. The chosen namesake saint becomes the patron saint of the person. Of course, when a child is baptized, the parents make this choice for him. Therefore, often when a baby grows up, he loses information about his patron and chooses him again. In this case, the church is allowed to choose its namesake saint, guided simply by its preferences. If a person has difficulties with this, then a formal calendar calculation procedure is carried out, according to which the patron saint will be considered the one whose memorial day according to the calendar is closest to the person’s birthday. All this is the cost of the traditional church, in which the sacraments, including baptism, are taught to almost everyone according to tradition. Often, people turn out to be not believers at all, and, of course, do not think about choosing a patron saint. Believers, churchgoers, take this more seriously and much more consciously.

Below we will talk about some of the saints in whose memory Sofia’s name day is celebrated. In addition to the dates of celebration according to the calendar, we will very briefly touch on their lives. It’s worth saying right away that many women glorified by the church will not be mentioned here, since there is no complete detailed list of saints.

About name days

Day Angel is a purely personal celebration of any person, which is based on a church holiday in the name of some saint of God and is celebrated with this holiday. Almost the day of a person's angel is celebrated on the day when the name of the saint in whose honor the person was given a name during the baptismal ceremony is venerated in the temple. Based on this, the day of the angel (and including Sophia) is considered a special divine celebration, and only those who have been baptized in an Orthodox church can celebrate it.

About choosing a name day

People, undergoing the sacrament of baptism in adulthood, themselves make the choice of a new name. This name may be the same as in official documents or different from them. There is only one condition according to which the name must be holy, that is, that any saint of God should be called by this name. Such a saint of God after the rite of baptism is considered a protector of man. Of course, in cases of baptism of children, relatives choose for them. It is for this reason that when children grow up, they do not remember their holy protector and choose him again. In such cases, it is customary in Christianity to choose one’s patron, following only one’s personal beliefs. In the case when a person cannot make a choice, they turn to a simple procedure that is performed using the church calendar. And according to which the heavenly protector will be the one whose day of veneration, according to the calendar, is celebrated on the birthday of people or two or three days earlier or later. This procedure is considered to be the prototype of the Christian faith, in which rituals, including the rite of baptism, are carried out with almost everyone according to customs. Quite often, during such a ceremony, the baptized person is not at all churched, and, of course, does not realize the whole essence of the election of a heavenly protector. The righteous, the true believers, approach this choice more thoughtfully and seriously. Further in the article are several saints of God, in whose honor the day of the angel named Sophia is celebrated. In addition to the day of veneration according to church calendars, we will tell you a little about their existence. It is necessary to note the fact that quite a large number of women revered by Christians will not be listed in our article, because there is no such complete list of God’s saints.

On this holiday, believers go to church and submit prayer requests in front of the great martyrs and pray for various types of help and guidance on the true path.

The life history of the saints

These martyrs lived at the end of the second century after the birth of Christ. A girl was born into a wealthy Christian family and she was named Sophia. When Sophia grew up, she became the wife of a pagan. The husband loved Sophia very much and did not force her to renounce her faith. Soon children appeared in the young family. And they were named Pistis, Alape and Elpis. Translated, they sounded like Faith, Love, Hope.

The girls' mother Sofia raised them in Christian traditions. Sofia taught her daughters to love the Almighty from an early age. However, after the birth of her third child, Sofia's husband unexpectedly died, and she raised three children alone. Because the wealth in the family was great: Sofia and the girls. Sofia raised her daughters with love and care. She read the Bible to them. Soon the girls grew up and most people noted that they were very smart and beautiful.

At that time, King Hadrian ruled Rome. And when he was informed about the Orthodox family, he issued a decree to immediately bring them to him. Sofia found out about this and it became clear to her why he needed them. Sofia immediately began to pray to the Almighty to grant her patience to go through all the terrible torment.

Sophia and her daughters were taken to the emperor. Everyone present was amazed at their steadfastness and calmness. At that time, Vera was only twelve years old, Nadya was ten, and Lyubov was only nine years old. The king called the girls one by one and offered to renounce Christianity and convert to paganism, but the sisters did not agree. The ruler offered the girls everything they could to renounce their faith, including sweets and gifts, but the sisters were firm.

The very first to be executed was the eldest daughter Vera. Andrian ordered her to be slashed with a whip, then doused with tar and set on fire. However, the Almighty protected the girl and she remained unharmed. The king became angry and ordered her head to be cut off.

Nadezhda was next. She went through all the torture just like her sister, and in the end her head was cut off. The last to be executed was Love. She was beaten to death with whips and then also decapitated. Their mother Sophia was destined for the most terrible torment. Her daughters were tortured in front of her and after their execution, their bodies were given to her. Sofia buried her daughters on a mountain hill outside the city. For several days she bore voluntary hardships over the graves of her daughters, and three days later she died on their graves.

Holy image of Faith, Hope, Love and Mother Sophia

Having survived such suffering, three girls and their mother Sophia were canonized. Of course, most believers know the meaning of this holy image. This face is considered family. Because every person is endowed with faith, hope and love. Without these three senses, people cannot live life to the fullest.

In the holy image, the holy martyrs are depicted as a strong and friendly family. Surely, few people know the meaning of this icon. Sophia means wisdom, Hope means faith in the Almighty, Love in Christianity means selfless love.

In what cases are prayer requests submitted to these martyrs?

Prayer before this divine face can help create a strong, reliable family union and find a faithful life partner.

Even before the icon they pray:

About the birth of a child,

About children's health,

About getting rid of women's illness,

About healing leg disease.

A sincere request can bring harmony, love and trust to the family. You just need to say it with all your heart.
