In this tutorial, I want to show you how to create your own font in Illustrator from scratch. The lesson is designed for those who do not have a graphics tablet. We will take simple shapes: sticks, circles and squiggles. And we will collect letters from this.

You may already know that various fonts and lettering are very popular on microstocks these days. I will tell you right away - I have never studied calligraphy and have not taken a single lesson on the Internet. I tried, but I wasn't enough. Everything turned out so difficult that, I'm sure, many simply gave up. The lessons were based on the fact that you had to first write the text on paper, then either scan or take a picture, then transfer it to Illustrator, then make a trace, remove extra points, align ... And the question invariably arose: why is it so difficult ?? Why not just start writing with the Brush tool in Illustrator? But of course, not everyone has a tablet, and it is inconvenient to display letters with a mouse. After experimenting and sniffing a little at the monitor, I figured out how to make everything much easier. And now you will find out how!

And a little clarification if anyone is interested. What is a font? It's just all letters of the same style. They are similar: they all have the same roundness, the same line length, or the same squiggles on the letters. What is lettering? These are just hand-drawn letters - freehand on paper, in Illustrator with the Pencil or Brush tool, painted in watercolor, pencil, or even carved into rock. "Inscriptions", in a word, which are created for a specific idea or situation. In lettering, the letters may not be very similar, but they are united by one idea. For example, the phrase "Good morning" with a cup of coffee, or "I wish you a good day" and the letters are circled with flower leaves, etc.

I also want to warn you that this lesson is to learn how to create a font, to master the tools, to acquire some skills, but not at all to upload it to Shutterstock or another microstock after creating a font and sell it there. Illustrations drawn from lessons cannot be uploaded to stocks. Because if you make a copy of the work from the lesson - this is called plagiarism. When I see a drawing on Shutterstock from my lesson, I usually write to support (yes, started fighting again) and they delete it, or even the entire portfolio. I am writing this because many simply do not know that you cannot sell pictures based on other people's lessons.

1. Settings

First, let's make a few adjustments to make drawing easier. After creating a new document, click Edit > Preferences > Guides & Grid... We will set up a special grid that will help you draw evenly. After that, a new window will appear where you need to enter the settings shown in the figure below. The colors in this box, of course, do not matter, put what you like, but the numbers do, so enter as shown. And then you press OK.

And one more important setting: View > Snap to Grid(link to grid). And than View > Snap to Point(snap to a point). That's all for now, it will be easy to draw now.

The font will be created in English, written.

We will use only 3 tools: Line, Oval and Arch (Line Segment Tool (\), Ellipse Tool (L), Arc Tool).

2. Draw the letter "a"

First we will draw all the lowercase letters and then all the uppercase ones.

Look at the panel Color (Window > Color) and make sure you remove the fill and leave only a black stroke color.

We take the tool Oval (Ellipse Tool (L)) and draw a circle. Then take the tool and add a vertical line three cells high. Using the tool Arch (Arc Tool), draw a small arc within the boundaries of one cell. Those. put a dot in the upper left corner of the cell and stretch to the lower right corner. Then we add two more arcs that finish forming the characteristic squiggle of our font, which will later be repeated for other letters.

3. Draw the letter "b"

Just like with the previous letter, we start with a circle, for drawing which we use the tool Oval (Ellipse Tool (L)). Then add a vertical line four cells high. And at the top of this line we draw an arc one cell in size using the tool Arch (Arc Tool).

4. Draw the letter "c"

To do this, we will first draw a circle, and then cut off the unnecessary part. So we drew a circle. To cut off unnecessary parts, we need to turn off snap to grid: View > Snap to Grid. Then we take the tool Scissors Tool (C) and cut off so that the letter "c" is obtained. After cutting off the unwanted part, you can delete it by pressing the key Delete on your keyboard.

5. Draw the letter "d"

We will not draw this letter. We'll just take the letter "b", make a copy (Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V) and just flip it from left to right. Color the halves of the letter in different shades of the same color - for example, light yellow and dark yellow.

The letter "C" looks very good, in which there is some kind of pattern in the center. Draw "C" like a regular letter or like a crescent moon with long horns. Don't limit yourself by drawing only with your hand, add other muscles as well. Drawing is a good physical activity. Sure, it can't compare to running or swimming, but it's also a workout. Include arms, shoulders, back and even legs in the process. The more muscles are involved in the process, the faster the skill will be formed, and then the speed increase is just a stone's throw away!

Let's start first with the compositional construction, so that the letters look correct and competent. To do this, we take sheet A 4, measure 4 cm from above and below and draw straight lines. In this rectangle, we will build a new font.

The next step is to make the letters wider and round off the sharp corners (Fig. 2).

Then, we take a bright blue felt-tip pen, cover the letters with color, and then circle with a contrasting blue so that our letters stand out (Fig. 3).

According to the same scheme, letters can be stylized as follows - make the lines wavy or “trembling”, and in some places make a “jagged effect”, as in the letter “A” (Fig. 4).

Then let's take a look at one of the most popular typefaces, which has pointed and curved letter elements. They are made with felt-tip pens and watercolor pencils (Fig. 6). Let's take the English alphabet as an example.

In order to understand how to build these letters (Fig. 7), let's take a sheet of A 4 format, and draw the following grid: step back from the top 2-3 cm, then 4 cm and 1 cm, and then again 4 cm. Thus so that we get 5 long rectangles, and between each 1 cm.
