Do-it-yourself replacement of engine mounts on a 16-valve VAZ-2112: remove from support

The engine mount is a special support that is designed to fix the engine to the car body. It is a structure made of a steel case and a rubber (rubber - approx.) pillow placed in it. Its main purpose is to minimize vibration on the car body coming from the engine.

The video shows the detailed process of replacing engine mounts on a VAZ 2110-2112.

On VAZ-2112 cars, different numbers of supports were installed on different engines. So, there were 3 of them on 8-valve engines, two on the sides and one in the back, and on a 16-valve - 4, two on the sides, one at the bottom in front and at the top in front of the motor . Below we will talk in detail about the 16-valve sample.

Step by step replacement process

Depending on which support is out of order, we replace it.

Right cushion

In order to unscrew the engine mount on the right side, we perform the following work order:

Left cushion

1. As in the case of the right pillow, dismantle the top nut.
2. Then we unscrew the two bolts on the sides and remove the pillow.
3. Remove the bottom washer from the stud.
4. Install the new cushion in reverse order.

Lower front cushion

1. Using the wrench, unscrew the two bolts in turn.
2. The sequence doesn't matter. Carry out dismantling according to convenience.
3. We dismantle the old pillow and install a new one.
4. If the inspection holes do not line up during installation, slightly raise the motor. For this you can use a jack.

Upper front cushion

This is what the new engine mount looks like.

Please note that during these works, it is strictly forbidden to dismantle all the pillows at once, since in this case, the engine will simply have nothing to hold on to. Replacement should be done strictly in turn, starting with one of the four supports. Also, for the most reliable fixation, you can put wooden supports or a jack under the engine.

Faults

You can understand that the engine mounts are out of order by increasing the vibrations coming from the engine to the body. When it functions in a stable mode, and the body begins to vibrate and rattle, transferring everything to the pedals and the steering wheel, you can be sure that the engine mounts are malfunctioning.

Also, pad wear is often observed during engine start and shutdown. So, if there is a lot of wear, noise can be heard about the contact of the engine elements and the metal pillow supports.

Health check

Before proceeding with the replacement of pillows, you should make sure that the old ones are working. Because, as all at once, they may not need to be changed.

First of all, with the engine running, inspect the condition of the pillows:

• For cracks.
• To maintain elasticity.
• For backlash in connections.

If there are no such reasons on some pillow, then it does not need to be replaced. And if they were found, then you should not delay with a replacement, since constant vibration can not only significantly reduce the comfort of driving a car, but also lead to negative consequences in the operation of the engine and gearbox.

Reasons for failure

Among all the reasons for the failure of engine mounts, the most basic can be distinguished:

• Spent resource of engine mounts, due to mechanical impact.
• Wear of rubber elements due to constant changes in ambient temperatures.

Before you go to the store, you must determine whether it is worth changing only the pillows or the entire support assembly. Depending on the condition of the metal supports, the absence of damage on it, it is possible to replace only its rubberized component.
