Hermitage Novy Arbat 11. Theater Hermitage (Hall on the Arbat)

History of the Hermitage Theater
The Moscow Hermitage Theater was created by director and writer Mikhail Levitin. The theater has been leading its history since 1959, when the Moscow Theater of Miniatures, headed by Vladimir Polyakov, appeared in the very center of Moscow, in the Hermitage Garden. The history of the building in Karetny Ryad remembers the great figures of art of the 20th century: it was here that the Moscow Art Theater was opened on October 14, 1898, in 1913 - the Mardzhanov Free Theater, where the first meeting of Alexander Tairov and Alisa Koonen took place. In the early 1920s, on this stage, Sergei Eisenstein staged his first production, the play The Mexican... The building of the Hermitage also remembers many, many others. Currently, the historical building of the theater in Karetny Ryad is closed for repairs and reconstruction. Therefore, since 2016, the theater has temporarily settled on another site at Novy Arbat 11.

Repertoire of the Hermitage Theater
The Hermitage is an author's theater recreated by Mikhail Levitin, who breathed new life into it and a special author's aesthetics. The theater is flamboyant and sometimes eccentric, once called "the most elegant avant-garde" theater in the country. The repertoire includes performances based on the most complex prose texts, which spoke the theatrical language for the first time, and premieres based on famous classical plays of the world repertoire. Among the authors are Daniil Kharms, Yuri Olesha, Alexander Vvedensky, Alexander Pushkin, Vladimir Mayakovsky, Evgeny Schwartz, William Shakespeare, Miguel de Cervantes, Bertolt Brecht, Gabriel Marquez and many others. Alfred Schnittke, Vladimir Dashkevich, Yuli Kim and Andrey Semyonov wrote music for the performances of the Hermitage. The scenery was created by artists David Borovsky and Alexander Borovsky, Boris Messerer, Garry Hummel, Sergey Barkhin.

Mikhail Levitin is a Russian theater director, writer, teacher, People's Artist of Russia, artistic director of the Moscow Hermitage Theatre. Author of numerous publications in periodicals and nineteen books of prose. Creator and presenter of author's cycles of television programs on the Kultura TV channel. Holder of the Order of Honor and twice laureate of the Moscow Prize in Literature (in 2010 for a book about Alexander Tairov and in 2017 for a book about Pyotr Fomenko).

His directorial career began with the graduation performance “On how Mr. Mockinpott got rid of his misfortunes”, staged in 1969 at the famous Taganka Theater by Yuri Lyubimov. After that there were a number of bright performances in Moscow, Riga, Odessa, Leningrad, Omsk, Novosibirsk and other cities; practically each of these productions, created under the difficult conditions of Soviet censorship, became an event in the theatrical world.

In the Moscow Theater "Hermitage" (then - the Theater of Miniatures) Mikhail Levitin since 1978. On this stage, he staged such famous performances as Kharms! Charms! Shardam! or School of Clowns" by D. Kharms (1982), "The Beggar, or the Death of Zand" by Y. Olesha (1986) "An Evening in a Madhouse" by A. Vvedensky (1989) and many others - more than sixty performances in total. Of the recent premieres of the theater - "My Shadow" by E. Schwartz (2013), "Lear the King" by W. Shakespeare (2014), "Krechinsky's Wedding" on Novy Arbat 11 by A. Sukhovo-Kobylin (2016), "Don Quixote" according to M. de Cervantes (2017) and many others.

During the artistic direction of the Hermitage Theater, Mikhail Levitin gathered around him a unique creative team and created a truly original theater, whose performances were appreciated not only by the Moscow public, but also by spectators in many cities of our country, as well as in Europe and Latin America, in which the theater has been on tour.

Although the building itself is not very large, there is enough space in the hall for everyone. High rise and good organization of space allow you to enjoy watching performances from any seat in the hall. A unique feature is the circular stage, thanks to which all the action takes place not somewhere on the side, but directly in the center. This allows the viewer to delve even more into what is happening and feel like not an outside observer, but the protagonist of the production.

Guests characterize the atmosphere as homely. There is a cloakroom in the lobby, and the buffet sells delicious cakes and buns that you can have during the intermission.

In addition, viewers note:

  • clear sound;
  • unsurpassed acting;
  • comfortable chairs;
  • light intimacy;
  • interesting repertoire.

If you want to see the theater in the full sense of the word, then the Hermitage is what you need.

April 27 - premiere!

“The performance Krechinsky's Wedding is a story about the illusory nature of being, where the truth is as difficult to distinguish from a lie as a fake diamond is from a real one. The picaresque comedy of Sukhovo-Kobylin in the interpretation of Levitin is a hymn to the “game” in all meanings of the word. It is not for nothing that the walls in Krechinsky's house look like a painted decoration, and spotlights are burning instead of lamps. And only the owner of this house has the opportunity to go beyond the boundaries of the stage box, sit in the front row of the auditorium and watch the confused partners. At the same time, the hero of Sukhovo-Kobylin is not omnipotent, he is just damn lucky in this game.

"Aksenov, Dovlatov, Two" in Paris!
Today, at the invitation of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Paris, as part of the Theatrical Russia at the Eiffel Tower project, the Moscow Hermitage Theater presented a play by Mikhail Levitin.

Congratulations to the participants and creators of the performance, congratulations to our Parisian "landing party", which today had a hard time under the thunder of applause from grateful Parisians!

The project "Russia Theater near the Eiffel Tower" is a joint work of the ARTIST media project and the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Paris. This is a year-round forum of the best theaters in Russia. The goal is to give Russian theaters an opportunity to present their achievements to the European audience. The forum provides for a regular (during the year) visit to Paris and showing the best performances of Russian theaters on the stage of the RCSC. In total, during the season (from March to March) the arrival of 6 best Russian theaters is expected.

Premiere at "Culture"

Dear friends! Next week, on Monday, on the TV channel "Culture" starts premiere of Mikhail Levitin's new author's cycle "The Star of Nonsense".

After the author's programs by Mikhail Levitin "... and others", "Happy Generation" and "Under the sky of the theater", a new cycle is released, dedicated to the brightest representatives of the literature of the 20s, who breathed life into many, many artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, those people from which a new page in the history of the Hermitage Theater began. And at the same time, those whom the Hermitage opened for the theater for the first time in history.

“Before one of my author's cycles, I was not so filled with excitement, because the best and most beautiful years of my creative life were given to the heroes of these programs: Kharms, Zabolotsky, Oleinikov and Vvedensky. They were the characters in my novels, the theme of inner reflections, the basis of the memorable historical performances of our theater. It is very difficult to tell all the ins and outs, to look at their work through the theater created by you. It seems to me that these four broadcasts claim to be some generalization. This is a very strong inner gesture, a strong movement towards those who no longer exist, and without which I cannot imagine any of my performances, although the authors are far from being the only ones. Their language, their thinking, their outlook on life are completely shared by me.

Mikhail Levitin

From Monday, on weekdays, at 18:45 on the TC "Culture" - "Star of nonsense". Mikhail Levitin about Daniil Kharms, Alexander Vvedensky, Nikolai Oleinikov and Nikolai Zabolotsky.

Attention!
The 2016 enrollment for the correspondence directing and acting course of People's Artists of Russia Mikhail Levitin and Mikhail Filippov at GITIS is open.

The training in the previous course has come to an end (set of 2012). Very soon the actors will receive their diplomas, and the directors will start defending their graduation performances. But the Hermitage Theater does not want to remain without students - those same people with burning eyes. And we are happy to announce the recruitment of a new course.

Preliminary selection consultations-listenings will be held in April and May. You can sign up for them, as well as find all the necessary information about recruitment, admission requirements, the necessary reading program and much more on the website kurs-levitina.ru

Waiting for you!

Everyone celebrates February 23 in their own way

A little over a month before the premiere. Starring - (RAMT).

“I became interested in this play while writing a book about Pyotr Fomenko In Search of Blissful Idiocy. Pyotr Fomenko, like no one in our theater, was engaged in the plays of Sukhovo-Kobylin, but for some reason did not stage Krechinsky's Wedding. I came across material that is in no way similar to other plays of our amazing classics: neither Gogol, nor Ostrovsky, nor Griboedov ... The mystery of the author, the mystery of his personality is present in Krechinsky's Wedding as in no other play of the trilogy.

Meeting with our dear friends - Tatyana and Sergey Nikitin very soon! March 9 at 19:00 on our stage "Novy Arbat 11" will be their concert "Time Comes".

You can order tickets on, or on the ticketland concert page.

About essence

Yesterday, after a long break and for the first time on the stage of Novy Arbat 11, a performance based on Vladimir Mayakovsky was held with great success and long standing ovations. Some photos for you - from a different, behind-the-scenes point of view. And believe me, love, the “essence” of which we are talking about, is no less on the other side of the ramp!

"Time Comes"
Dear viewers! In March, at our Novy Arbat 11 site, we welcome dear guests: Tatyana and Sergey Nikitin. Concert-meeting called "Time Comes" will take place on March 9 at 19:00 in our theater, on the stage at Novy Arbat, 11.

“The desire for friendship with Sergei and Tatyana Nikitin has always dominated me. We were going to do the play My shadow together, especially since it was connected with Todorovsky. Due to various circumstances, only Todorovsky's music remained, the musical work on the performance was carried out without Sergei. But in the end he was satisfied with our work. He made various proposals to us, his appearances in the theater were rare, but very pleasant. The thought of the concert was in the air. Sergei and Tatyana Nikitin are our first guests and great friends on the new stage at Novy Arbat, 11. I expect a lot from this concert. When the walls are filled with the sound of the songs of such people, they become more reliable and better.

Let's play wedding...

Dear friends! In the poster section, the repertoires of our theater are also published. The main of the nearest and the nearest of the main events that we are all waiting for is the March premiere, the first in a new place after the move. On March 27, on the day of the theater, we will play "Krechinsky's wedding on Novy Arbat 11".

Congratulations!
From the bottom of our hearts we congratulate our amazing actress, Honored Artist of Russia on her anniversary!

“The fate of Dasha Belousova is a huge part of the fate of the entire Hermitage Theatre, especially in recent times. Of course, I do not rule out that the entire troupe, and especially a few leading artists, build this theater life. But, if we talk about Dasha, she knows me so much and ended up in this theater in such strange ways - as if she had lived her life with me. But that's the way it is. I prepared her for admission to the theater, she is the daughter of my favorite actress Galina Ivanovna Moracheva, at that time not just a favorite, but the main actress. Dasha went to Petr Naumovich Fomenko, my closest person and friend, became his favorite, played in his play. Then it turned out to be with us and has been around for decades. Somehow I and my theater passed through her soul. And her soul merged with the theater. I did not notice how I turned as old as I did, how she turned as old as she turned, which indicates a great passion for each other and art.

My dear Dashenka, everything will be even better!”

New Year's anniversary
“And the artists of the troupe of Mikhail Levitin prepared an hour-long peculiar review show against the backdrop, which depicted the Hermitage theater building, and it was sad, touching and joyful at the same time, because the ‘Hermitage spirit’ lives in each of them forever, anywhere in the city...

This spirit of a special nature, filled with a special energy, could without exaggeration be called the product of Mikhail Levitin, a man for whom the category of Time was as if specially formulated by F. M. Dostoevsky: What is Time? Time does not exist, Time is – the relation of being to non-being…. This is the attitude of being a director, writer, culturologist to the non-existence of those about whom he speaks, writes, puts on performances, to the people of the 20s of the twentieth century, to his departed parents, to the city of his childhood, Odessa, in the name of overcoming oblivion, for the sake of the return of their entire existence to our spiritual experience and cultural life is the foundation of his personality, the foundation of the theater he created. Nothing should be lost, everything has a continuation - it is important to know, remember this, then your life will be filled with new colors and a greedy desire to live, to live at all costs!..»

Kira Alekseeva, New Year's Anniversary, Tribuna newspaper

Happy anniversary!
Congratulatory telegram from Dmitry Anatolyevich Medvedev:

Dear Mikhail Zakharovich!

Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your 70th birthday and best wishes.

You are a multifaceted, multi-talented person: a writer and director, TV presenter and teacher, and most importantly, the creator and permanent artistic director of the Hermitage Author's Theater. You came here together with the graduates of your workshop, gave new life to the old theater of miniatures, brought modern aesthetics to it. On its stage, the audience saw the original interpretation of the works of famous playwrights, as well as vivid performances based on your plays and dramatizations.

For a quarter of a century, the Levitin Hermitage has become an integral part of the cultural space of Moscow. A unique atmosphere of free creativity reigns here, which is loved and appreciated by fans of theatrical art of all ages.

I wish you good health, inspiration and unceasing applause in the coming new year.

"The theater is a window to life"

A new stage of our renovation - horizons and prospects, which you can now admire through new windows installed at the Clown School- on the third stage of our theater in Karetny Ryad.

“Well, in general, the theater is a window to the world, of course, a window to the world. Somehow I always thought that the main thing is to live ... Theater is a window to life. In fact, it’s good to think in terms of the theater, it’s good to allow yourself to be legally free, because on the stage you still don’t live in a conventional world. The conditional world is our world. The one in which you have to communicate with those with whom you do not want to communicate, a world where you find yourself in situations that are completely optional, where you have to watch TV and see nonsense. People are very rarely free, maybe only when they are alone, I don't know. And on the stage we are free. And this is what the Hermitage Theater is different from.
Theater is a window to life.”

Everything happily came together
In the almanac-newspaper "Informprostranstvo" (No. 191-2016) Alexander Yeshanova with the main artist of our theater Yevgeny Dobrovinsky was published, dedicated to the book by Mikhail Levitin "In Search of Blissful Idiocy".

“Most likely, I was pushed by the form of Levitin's prose. A little torn, very frank. Written with love for Fomenko, written very recklessly, or something. There was a kind of dualism, a kind of game. It is difficult for me to analyze, but while reading, there was a feeling that I was sitting at a table at which people who knew Fomenko well were just talking. It was very bribe. I had a feeling that friends gathered who know a lot about Pyotr Fomenko, and now they remember ... "

Article in Moscow Perspective

“The Hermitage Theatre”, the building of which is being renovated, will start giving its performances on the new site on December 2 (earlier it was rented by Helikon-Opera). The premises were transferred to the theater by the Department of City Property of Moscow. On Novy Arbat, 11, building 1, the corresponding signboards have already appeared. Meanwhile, work continues in the historic building of the Hermitage…”

Do not miss!

Today - for everyone who has a TV, tomorrow - look at the website of the TV channel "Culture". As part of a reading project Russian lessons. Readings», today at 13:15 and 23:40 at the TK "Culture" Mikhail Levitin reads the story of Konstantin Simonov "Colonel Saburov". Do not miss!

Do not miss!
Tomorrow, November 5, at 21:52 - "Cultural Revolution" on the TV channel "Culture". Visiting Mikhail Shvydkoy Mikhail Levitin and Yuri Polyakov, topic: "The theater has ceased to be a mirror of society".

At all times, the theater was considered a mirror in which historical events and people were reflected. More than once in the history of mankind, prophecies uttered from the stage have come true. It was the ability to talk about what excites people today, the ability to experience and rethink what they saw, comparing it with their life experience, has always attracted the public to the theater.

Today, the public has big complaints about the theater - the great works of Russian and foreign classics have been turned into entertainment, and modern Gogols, Chekhovs and Ostrovskys are not visible in sight. Does the theater have a chance to regain its former positions or is it impossible? Or maybe you don't need to?

Congratulations!
Congratulations Svetlana Butonova- our wonderful make-up artist with an anniversary!

“In the first days, when I came to the theater, I saw just a beautiful woman. Even, perhaps, not quite friendly to me, since I was a new person, and she got used to the team that had already formed. It turned out that she is her own, close, very talented in her work and strict, which is necessary for a make-up artist. And able to endure their considerable difficulties with dignity.
To give her head - I would be happy if there was at least something on her head! Congratulations and I love her."

"Don't look for falling beams!"
Today, the most important event for the theater took place, perhaps one of the most important stages in the renovation of our historic building in Karetny Ryad. New beams of a unique design were installed above the Great Hall of the Theater.

“Here, mostly, young people are sitting in the hall, the uninitiated, sorry, in history, who also want to watch the falling beams ...”

“A golden scattering of the names of my childhood: Sandler, Schneider, Huberman, Kracht, Tipot, Vinnikov, Dunaevsky, Mass, Chervinsky, Erdman, Volpin, composers, librettists, such products must be hidden, but they are all for show and show, shameless.”

Juvenes dum sumus!
Chekhov and Shakespeare in our theater! What could be better than spending the last summer days in this humble society.

Blow, winds, and crack your cheeks, juvenes dum sumus!
pereat tristitia,
Pereant dolores!
Pereat Diabolus,
Quivis Antiburschius,
Atque irrisores! Blow, winds… rage! blow!

And again, "Who is the author? .."

"We are renewing
And all its details.
The piano was all open
And the strings in it trembled…
- Why are you trembling? - asked the sufferers
Playing the sonata with ten fingers.
We can't stand this kind of regime.
You beat us - and we tremble! ..
But their hands answered,
Hitting the keys again:
- When you are beaten, you make sounds,
And if you are not beaten, you will be silent.

The meaning of this short fable is clear:
If they didn't beat us,
we wouldn't write fables." Yes, and face with you, we are not similar,
Where is your shadow? - they shouted to me all around,
Laughing and making foolish faces ... "

Prooperetta!

"Music comes from life"

Isaac Dunayevsky

“Operetta is a kind of art by no means lower than all the others. Perhaps it is the most modern kind of spectacle ... The synthesis of the arts - comedy, music and dance - more meets the needs of the nervous, with a complicated soul of the spectator of our days.

Pyotr Salt "Revival of the operetta", 1915

“Soviet operetta must have its own original look. She will defeat the "woman" with her strong household, factory, street song. “Silva, you don’t love me” has become too strong in our everyday life”

Isaac Dunayevsky

“Over the decades of its existence, Mikhail Levitin's Hermitage has gained a lot of loyal admirers, who have found it to be to their liking this particular aesthetic – complex, whimsical, which makes you not only enjoy the spectacle, but also rather intensely think about it. Actually, this theater was born like that - it lives like that, experiencing either happy or not very happy times. Today, when the building is closed for repairs and one has to roam around different metropolitan venues, each time adapting performances to new conditions, the life of the theater is, in a sense, sad. But it very accurately corresponds to the time beloved by Mikhail Levitin: in the 20s of the twentieth century, the literary association Serapionov Brothers chose as its motto the words: The situation is desperate - we will have fun! Perhaps that is why, contrary to the proposed circumstances (and the performance in the playbill of the theater, when the Big Stage was already closed, and the renovation still did not begin), Mikhail Levitin invites us to this carnival, which, like every carnival, has its own laughing, scary, sad and crafty masks? .. Prooperetta!
Ah, operetta… operetta… How to live without vivid feelings, naive and straightforward, without a fusion of comedy, music and dance, without sudden changes in stage “temperatures”? It doesn't matter whether we are talking about a "Viennese" operetta or a "Soviet" one. Although they were different, but, perhaps, “Silva” or “Violet of Montmartre”, and “Wedding in Malinovka” or “White Acacia” you remember with tenderness and love. Soviet only closer ...

Life without these turbulent and open feelings is the same as the life of a theater, left without a home for a while and forced to wander around other people's venues. The Hermitage knows this, believe me.

There is only one answer - take it all with you. Carry away the atmosphere of the old house - the garden and the Hermitage Theater, recreate it on stage. Take his free operetta from the past - the freest genre born in the unfree world - and let it sound today. Right on a garden bench, not far from the summer stage of the Hermitage, in the presence and with the participation of four co-authors, who are composing an application for a new operetta.

It was summer or autumn. Or maybe in the spring, when the janitor was sweeping the garden paths, mothers were walking with strollers, and lovers of fresh Moscow air were relaxing on the benches. From the loudspeakers came the "Sports March", then the popular song of Mark Bernes ...

“One of the main titles is a play by artistic director Mikhail Levitin, who swung at Shakespeare's tragedy about a king who, at the end of his reign, decided to retire and divide the country between his three daughters. Classical directing is not worth waiting for, Levitin is the discoverer of the Oberiuts, and therefore serious absurdity reigns on the stage: a flock of sheep runs back and forth, unknowable Japanese arrange fights, Lear himself (the magnificent Mikhail Filippov) asks the audience something. A separate plus is the famous Swedish trombonist Elias Faingersch in the role of the resilient lyre jester.”

“Although this is a temporary shelter, it is still yours. In addition, Helikon arranged the premises very well, there are good conditions, very comfortable, a wonderful hall”

Mikhail Levitin

“Not the hottest summer. Rain. You stand without a roof, water drips into your gut in thin streams, and you think: what did you leave behind? What geniuses raised! What will happen next? You think that kind-hearted people are swarming inside you, renewing the walls, strengthening the elderly legs of the foundation with cement and tightening old wrinkles with mortar ... It's time to indulge in memories.
