Historical reference

On June 6, 1944, the strategic operation "Overlord" began to land the Allied troops in Normandy - the largest landing in the history of wars. More than three million people took part in it. Operation Overlord opened the Western Front in the European theater of operations in World War II.

At the stage of preparation, the operation was extremely classified. The servicemen who were supposed to become part of the operation were forbidden to leave their places of deployment. The preparations for Overlord were accompanied by a massive disinformation campaign.

Allied forces included the armies of the United States, Canada, Great Britain, as well as the troops of the Free French and French Resistance units. General Dwight Eisenhower commanded the operation. The drop zones were divided between Omar Bradley's US 1st Army (Omaha and Utah sites) and Miles Dempsey's British 2nd Army (Sord, Juno, Gold sites).

Shortly after midnight, American and British paratroopers landed on the occupied territory. Their tasks were to capture bridges, small settlements and provide cover for the landing.

The landing on the beaches of Normandy began around 6:30 am. Throughout the day, American and British troops fought against the German defensive line. The enemy's most stubborn resistance was in the Omaha sector in the American zone of responsibility. Here the landing troops suffered the heaviest losses. The British also faced strong opposition in the Sord area.

By the end of the day, the Allies managed to land about 150 thousand people and a large amount of equipment on the shore. In some areas, the advance of the British and American troops amounted to eight kilometers inland. A powerful springboard for the development of an offensive deep into Europe was ready.

The landings in Normandy, regarded by the Allies as the most significant operation of the Second World War, were the largest amphibious operations during this conflict. It must be said that its implementation was postponed for many years and became possible only after the realization by England and the United States that the defeat of the Third Reich by the Soviet Union was possible without the help of the allies. On the Soviet-German front, the German command concentrated 239.5 divisions of the Wehrmacht and its satellites. The total number of troops operating in France and Italy did not exceed 85 divisions. This state of affairs made it much easier for the Allies to invade the northwestern coast of France ...

Directive No. 40, issued by A. Hitler back in March 1942, provided for the creation of a deep layered system of fortifications along the entire length of the Atlantic coast - 2600 km. To this end, the German command was forced to remove artillery, barbed wire and mines located on the French-German border, on the Siegfried Line. However, these measures were not enough. The German command after the failures of 1942-43. thought about strengthening the defensive line on the French coast. All the activities of late 1943 and early 1944 were aimed at creating a combat-ready group of troops covering the entire western coast from the Mediterranean to the English Channel. As a result, three army groups were created: B, G and D. Moreover, army groups B and G were subordinate to the West command, which was headed by Field Marshal von Rundstedt. At the beginning of the Allied landings on June 6, 1944, German troops in France, Belgium and Holland had 58 German divisions, including 42 infantry, 9 tank, 4 airfield and 2 parachute and motorized divisions. This grouping was joined by 64 so-called "legions" of battalion and brigade composition, recruited from prisoners of war and attached to German divisions. The numerical strength of Army Groups B and G totaled 886 thousand people (for comparison, in June 1944, the grouping of German troops and their allies on the Soviet-German front totaled 4.3 million people).

The German command directed all efforts to strengthening the coastline of the Pas de Calais. It was here that the main blow of the enemy was expected. In addition, a powerful defense unit equipped with 4 batteries of guns of caliber from 280 to 406 mm was equipped at Cape Greene and on the islands of Guernsey and Jersey, where 11 batteries were placed. So, on May 20, 1944, engineering fortifications in the defense zone of the 15th Wehrmacht armies were only 68% ready, and in the 7th Army band - only 18%. Instead of the 50 million mines envisaged by the plan, only 4 million were laid. In the fortified defense points of the Atlantic coast, according to the data at the end of 1943, there were 5046 artillery and anti-tank guns of various calibers.

The engineering structures of the German antiamphibious defense were a strip of fortifications, which had an insignificant depth. The first strip was located directly at the coastline. guided land mines and mine traps carried out to sea was approximately 400 m from the coast. Numerous barrage anti-tank hedgehogs, as well as traps, were installed on the shore. The entire antiamphibious defense zone was divided into sectors and was covered by various machine guns and anti-tank guns.

And yet, the Atlantic Wall, about which German propaganda trumpeted right and left, turned out to be a myth that the allies skillfully used, constantly postponing the opening of the Second Front, which our troops needed so much in the first half of the war. The second line of defense was a system of strongholds for platoon and company trains that did not have fire communication between themselves, separated from each other by a distance of 1.5-2 km. The strongholds were equipped with wood-and-earth and concrete firing points, equipped with machine guns and artillery pieces, interconnected by trenches.

After collecting detailed information about the German defenses, the Anglo-American troops landed not where they were expected. So, in the landing area on a front 75 km wide, the Germans had only two batteries of 150-mm guns, a battery of field 122-mm artillery, four 122-mm and four 150-mm guns. In other words, in the zone of counteraction to the allied landing, the density of guns reached about 0.3 barrels per 1 km of the coast.

Together with the low mobility and weak firepower of the German ground forces in the landing zone, as well as their large dispersion, weak air cover, the lack of prepared lines in the depths of defense, insufficient reserves and the lack of a unified command of the entire grouping, it was impossible to resist the Anglo-American troops.

It is one of the bloodiest battles in the history of World War II. The total losses of the two sides in less than a day of battles amounted, according to various sources, to about 20,000 people. About half a million soldiers took part in the battle.

Operation Overlord (Neptune)

Historical reference.

Overlord ( overlord) translated from English - the ruler. This operation opened a second front in Europe and consisted of two stages:

  1. Operation Neptune- June 6, 1944, aka Normandy landing, D-Day. By the way, Americans call the beginning of almost any military operation D-Day.
  2. Operation Cobra is the second phase, the tasks of which included the further deepening of forces in Europe.

From 1941 to 1944 there was a relative calm on the western front, as the main German forces were transferred to the east. During this period in Europe, several single landing operations of the Allied forces can be noted, which were not crowned with success, but brought a lot of experience in conducting such operations.

In 1944, the combined armies of the United States, Great Britain and Canada, under the command of the American General Eisenhower (and in the future, the President of America from 53 to 61), began to land in Normandy.

According to the agreements reached during the Tehran conference, Great Britain and the United States were to launch an offensive in Northern France in May 1944, but the Allied industry did not manage to produce a sufficient number of self-propelled barges by the deadline, and the operation was postponed to June. The Germans were aware of the preparations for the invasion, but the Allies managed to misinform German intelligence: Hitler decided that the battle would take place in the Pas de Calais area (the narrowest part of the English Channel). He ordered several panzer divisions to be brought there, although some generals urged instead to reinforce the German forces in Normandy.

Preparations for the invasion ended in the first days of summer, and on the night of June 6, the commander of the Anglo-American troops, General Eisenhower, ordered the start of the operation. The British units, which had extensive combat experience, stormed the most fortified sections of the German defense. Despite the fierce resistance of the Germans, the landing of the allies in Normandy in the British zones took place without unpleasant surprises, but the American units, many of which first encountered the enemy, managed to seize bridgeheads with difficulty: two American airborne divisions were scattered over a huge area, and on landing area Omaha beach the allies were almost thrown into the sea.

The landing of troops in Normandy by American units were five beaches: Omaha, Gold, Utah, Sword and Juneau. However, these were code names, since it would be difficult for real Americans to pronounce, and during the fighting, the clarity and brevity of commands can decide the outcome of the battle.

The German generals quickly realized that the main operation was taking place in Normandy, but Hitler strictly forbade the movement of reserves without his permission, and his subordinates were afraid to wake the Fuhrer. By the morning of June 7, when the elite panzer divisions of the Wehrmacht were redirected from the Pas de Calais region to Normandy, time had already been lost. The Allies entrenched themselves on the French coast and prepared to move inland.
