“Because I didn’t know you’d be in town,” Sam explained for the tenth time. – It is indecent to appear with a guest who is not on the invitation list. – But Sam didn’t want to take Veronica with him for this reason.

- But I’m Veronica.

Here. This is the reason. This girl was rude and narcissistic. Sam could also act like a rude and narcissistic egoist, but despite all the stories about him in the newspapers, he knew how to stay within the bounds of decency.

- I won't eat much.

Most likely nothing will happen at all. And this trait irritated him terribly in Veronica. She never ate. Veronica ordered so much food as if she had been starving for several months, but in the end she just picked at her plate with a fork without swallowing a single piece.

Sam tightened the knot and moved his chin to fasten the top button.

- I already called a taxi for you.

Sam watched as Veronica got out of bed and walked towards him. She moved along the carpet as if she were walking on a catwalk - long legs, smoothly swaying full breasts.

- When will you come back? – Veronica asked, hugging Sam around the waist. She rested her chin on his shoulder and looked at his reflection in the mirror with her big brown eyes.

- Late. – Sam turned his gaze to the champion’s ring lying on the chest of drawers. Made of white and yellow gold, it was decorated with the team's emblem of one hundred and sixty diamonds, sapphires and emeralds. One side was engraved with the Stanley Cup and the date. On the other is Sam's number and his name. He took it out to show Veronica, but had no intention of putting it on. Even if he liked to wear jewelry, this ring covered a good half of his finger and was too big. Even for someone who likes to wear jewelry.

– How late?

Sam glanced at the clock on the bedside table. It's already half past six, and the ceremony starts at seven. He really didn't have time to meet Veronica. Although she was not often in the city and promised that the meeting would pass quickly. Devil. It was high time to remember that Veronica doesn’t do anything quickly.

- I'm really late. When will you fly?

- In the morning. – Veronica sighed and ran her hands over the tight cubes on Sam’s stomach. - I could wait for you.

Sam turned around and the girl's hands slid onto his waist.

– I don’t know when I’ll be back. The celebration can last all night. “However, Sam doubted it. After all, the season opens in five days. He brushed Veronica's dark curls away from her face. “Call me when you get to Seattle.”

- This can only happen in a few months. And even then I may not find you in the city. – Veronica dropped her hands and headed towards the bed.

Sam looked at the girl's thin figure as she put on her tiny panties. He liked many things about Veronica: her face, her body, her frivolity and the absence of any thoughts in her pretty head. And there is nothing wrong with being frivolous. The fact is that a person simply does not want to bother himself with thoughts. This only makes life easier.

“We can always meet somewhere else.”

- Right. – Veronica pulled on a red T-shirt and then skinny jeans. - Only you will have a black eye again.

Sam smiled:

- Right. - He put on his jacket. Last season he caught Veronica in Pittsburgh. That day they played against the Penguins. He scored a goal, spent four minutes in the penalty box for a double violation and received his first black eye of the season. Maybe this girl will bring him good luck this year? Sam took his wallet and put it in his back pants pocket.

“Your beautiful face looked terrible last season,” Veronica noted, putting on elegant high-heeled pumps.

Well, it wasn't that bad. Just a few stitches and some minor bruising. In sixteen years, worse things have happened in the NHL.

Rachel Gibson has created a wonderful novel with adult characters whose actions are more conscious and logical. The author reveals the images of his characters, their feelings and thoughts very well. The scenes with the father and son are especially touching, as the hero’s consciousness changes when he meets his child. The heroine’s inner strength cannot fail to touch her, because in order to forgive an insult, incredible strength is needed. Rachel also sprinkled her novel with a fair amount of appropriate humor.
