All about the Chevrolet Niva axle bearing

A car from the SUV class has all-wheel drive on all four wheels. Such a mechanism determines the presence of a rear axle, which is designed to transmit torque from the gearbox to the driving rear wheels. The rotation of the wheels is ensured by the presence of gears and axle shafts in the bridge. The axle shaft is connected to the wheel and sets it in motion. But what is the axle shaft bearing in the bridge for? Since the topic of the article is called the axle shaft bearing, it is about it that we will discuss further. Let us consider in more detail this mechanism in the design of the rear axle, its purpose, design (size, number, etc.), malfunctions and the replacement process. To consolidate the skills at the bottom of the material there is a video on which you can visually study the replacement procedure.

The bearing is located in the design of the Chevrolet Niva rear axle, closer to the outer edge. Like all bearings, it performs the function of supporting and smoothing the torque of the rear axle axle. One part of the axle (internal) engages with gears (has splines), and the second part leaves the bridge, and a flange, brake drums and a Chevrolet Niva wheel are attached to it. In order for the axis to rotate smoothly and at the same time not go inside the structure, there is a ball bearing.

The bearing is located in a special seat of the bridge design, where it performs its direct function. In order for it not to move inside the bridge, there is a special rigid fixation on the axis, which is a locking sleeve. So it has a double commit. There is also an oil seal on the axle shaft, which ensures a tight connection of the rear axle structure.

Important! In the event of damage to the seal or its wear, there is a direct negative effect on the bearing, as a result of which the latter fails. Therefore, the seal needs to be replaced.

With frequent use of the Chevrolet Niva car, it is necessary to monitor the condition of the bearing and oil seal, and if they are damaged, immediately replace them.

Design

Like many parts, the axle shaft bearing has its own design, which is characterized by important indicators:

  1. number;
  2. size internal and external;
  3. height.

This data is necessary not only so that the bearing can be installed in the seat of the axle shaft and axle, but also so that it performs its assigned functions. But it is worth noting that if one of these data is known, then the second one can not be calculated. So, for example, the axle shaft bearing has a catalog number 2121-2403080. If the product number is known, then this is enough to purchase it at a car dealership. If you need to know the dimensions, then the Internet has data: height and size.

If the catalog number is unknown, then after removing the axle shaft, you can make full measurements of the product. After the measurement, the following data should be obtained:

  • D internal = 40 mm;
  • D external = 80 mm;
  • Height (thickness) = 23 mm.

Bearing failures

The failure of the axle shaft bearing can lead to wheel jamming right on the road, which is dangerous. It’s good if the speed of a moving car is small and somewhere outside the city, but the Chevrolet Niva is operated not only at low speed and off-road. Therefore, it is very important to control such an important part and replace it prematurely.

You can determine the failure by the characteristic sound from under the wheels, as well as in the presence of increased radial and axial play.

The axial clearance must not exceed 0.7 mm.

To determine, you do not need to pick up speed to hear a crack or rumble, just turn on first gear and drive a couple of meters. A hum or crackle occurs in the absence of lubricants, which leads to product spillage.

If you notice uncharacteristic noise in the area of \u200b\u200bthe rear, then you should immediately make sure that the bearings are in good condition.

Removing the shaft and replacing the bearing

In order to replace a failed bearing, first of all, it is necessary to remove the wheel, brake drum, axle shaft, and only after that it is replaced. Chevrolet Niva is installed on a flat surface and the rear part is jacked up. The wheel and drum are removed, the procedure for removing them can be found in the relevant articles. Therefore, we will not dwell on this, but proceed immediately to the removal of the axle shaft.

So, the withdrawal process is as follows:

  1. The second jack raises part of the bridge, in order to avoid oil leakage when removing the axle shaft.
  2. The axle shaft is fastened with four nuts on "17". Using a socket wrench, remove the nuts along with the grovers.
  3. The half shaft is removed. If it is clamped and cannot be removed, then with the help of a hammer and a bar we try to knock it out.

Niva Chevrolet is equipped with drum brakes on the rear wheels with and without abs. Even the first Sheviks went without the abs system. ABS is an anti-lock braking system that prevents loss of vehicle control. The difference between the axle shaft of a car with an abs system and a simple one lies in the design of the retaining ring. The anti-lock braking system needs a splined retaining ring. Vehicles without this system have circlips without slots. The photo below shows the differences.

So, let's consider how the bearing is replaced on a Chevrolet Niva SUV with an abs system.

  1. The suitability of the bearing is checked. After removing the axle shaft, do not forget about the oil seal. It is pressed into the brake pad.
  2. The gland is removed with a screwdriver and a hammer. After replacing the bearing, the oil seal must be installed with a new one.
  3. The axle shaft is clamped in a vice.
  4. The knurled retaining ring that secures the bearing is removed. We knock it out with a chisel and a hammer.
  5. The bearing is removed in the same way as the ring.

    Check the axle shaft for cracks and chips. They should not be, otherwise boring will be required.

  6. Now you need to change the old bearing to a new one. Before installing it, check for the presence of lubricant inside. Add if necessary.
  7. The bearing is pressed onto the shaft. You can use a pipe of the appropriate diameter and length not less than the axle shaft.
  8. The installation of the retaining ring is best done by heating it. The ring is heated with a blowtorch for 5-10 minutes to 200 degrees.
  9. The ring is mounted on the axle shaft and pressed with a tube.

The axle can now be reinstalled in the reverse order of removal. This completes the replacement, it remains to install the drum and wheel, and proceed with the replacement on the other side of the Chevrolet Niva car.

After installation, check the functionality of the replaced parts. After driving a few hundred meters, you need to listen for extraneous noise from under the wheels. If noise is not detected, then everything is done correctly. Good luck with your renovations!

Do you still think that car diagnostics is difficult?

If you are reading these lines, then you have an interest in doing something yourself in the car and really save because you already know that:

  • Service stations break a lot of money for simple computer diagnostics
  • To find out the mistake you need to go to specialists
  • Simple wrenches work in the services, but you can’t find a good specialist

And of course you are tired of throwing money down the drain, and it’s out of the question to ride around the service station all the time, then you need a simple ELM327 AUTO SCANNER that connects to any car and through a regular smartphone you will always find a problem, pay off the CHECK and save a lot! !!

Is your Shniva reliable?
