Kuprin garnet bracelet problematic. Kuprin's story "Garnet bracelet"

Introduction
"Garnet Bracelet" is one of the most famous stories of the Russian prose writer Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin. She was published in 1910, but for the domestic reader she still remains a symbol of selfless sincere love, the kind that girls dream about, and the one that we so often miss. Earlier we published this wonderful work. In the same publication, we will tell you about the main characters, analyze the work and talk about its problems.

The events of the story begin to unfold on the birthday of Princess Vera Nikolaevna Sheina. Celebrate at the dacha in the circle of the closest people. In the midst of fun, the hero of the occasion receives a gift - a garnet bracelet. The sender decided to remain unrecognized and signed a short note with only the initials of the GSG. However, everyone immediately guesses that this is a longtime admirer of Vera, some petty official who has been flooding her with love letters for many years now. The husband and brother of the princess quickly figure out the identity of the annoying boyfriend and the next day they go to his house.

In a miserable apartment they are met by a timid official named Zheltkov, he meekly agrees to take the gift and promises never to appear before the eyes of the respectable family, provided that he makes the last farewell call to Vera and makes sure that she does not want to know him. Vera Nikolaevna, of course, asks Zheltkov to leave her. The next morning, the newspapers will write that a certain official has committed suicide. In a farewell note, he wrote that he had squandered state property.

Main characters: characteristics of key images

Kuprin is a master of the portrait, moreover, through appearance, he draws the character of the characters. The author pays a lot of attention to each hero, devoting a good half of the story to portrait characteristics and memories, which are also revealed by the characters. The main characters of the story are:

  • - princess, central female image;
  • - her husband, prince, provincial marshal of the nobility;
  • - a petty official of the control chamber, passionately in love with Vera Nikolaevna;
  • Anna Nikolaevna Friesse- Vera's younger sister;
  • Nikolai Nikolaevich Mirza-Bulat-Tuganovskiy- brother of Vera and Anna;
  • Yakov Mikhailovich Anosov- General, military comrade of Vera's father, a close friend of the family.

Faith is an ideal representative of the high society both in appearance, and in manners, and in character.

“Vera took after her mother, a beautiful Englishwoman, with her tall, flexible figure, gentle, but cold and proud face, beautiful, albeit rather large hands, and that charming sloping of the shoulders, which can be seen in old miniatures”

Princess Vera was married to Vasily Nikolaevich Shein. Their love has long ceased to be passionate and passed into that calm stage of mutual respect and tender friendship. Their union was happy. The couple did not have children, although Vera Nikolaevna passionately wanted a baby, and therefore she gave all her unspent feeling to the children of her younger sister.

Vera was royally calm, coldly kind to everyone, but at the same time very funny, open and sincere with close people. She was not inherent in such feminine tricks as affectation and coquetry. Despite her high status, Vera was very prudent, and knowing how unsuccessfully things were going for her husband, she sometimes tried to deprive herself so as not to put him in an uncomfortable position.

The husband of Vera Nikolaevna is a talented, pleasant, gallant, noble person. He has an amazing sense of humor and is a brilliant storyteller. Shein keeps a home journal, which contains non-fictional stories with pictures about the life of the family and its associates.

Vasily Lvovich loves his wife, perhaps not as passionately as in the first years of marriage, but who knows how long passion really lives? The husband deeply respects her opinion, feelings, personality. He is compassionate and merciful to others, even those who are much lower than him in status (his meeting with Zheltkov testifies to this). Shein is noble and endowed with the courage to admit mistakes and his own wrong.

We first meet Official Zheltkov near the end of the story. Up to this point, he is present in the work invisibly in the grotesque image of a klutz, an eccentric, a fool in love. When the long-awaited meeting finally takes place, we see a meek and shy person in front of us, it is customary to ignore such people and call them “little ones”:

“He was tall, thin, with long, fluffy, soft hair.”

His speeches, however, are devoid of the chaotic whim of a madman. He is fully accountable for his words and deeds. Despite the seeming cowardice, this man is very brave, he boldly tells the prince, the lawful spouse of Vera Nikolaevna, that he is in love with her and cannot do anything about it. Zheltkov does not fawn over the rank and position in society of his guests. He submits, but not to fate, but only to his beloved. And he knows how to love - selflessly and sincerely.

“It so happened that I am not interested in anything in life: neither politics, nor science, nor philosophy, nor concern for the future happiness of people - for me life is only in you. I now feel that some uncomfortable wedge crashed into your life. If you can, forgive me for this.”

Analysis of the work

Kuprin got the idea for his story from real life. In fact, the story was more of an anecdotal character. A certain poor telegraph operator named Zheltikov was in love with the wife of one of the Russian generals. Once this eccentric was so brave that he sent his beloved a simple gold chain with a pendant in the form of an Easter egg. Scream and only! Everyone laughed at the stupid telegraph operator, but the inquisitive writer's mind decided to look beyond the anecdote, because real drama can always lurk behind a visible curiosity.

Also in the “Garnet Bracelet”, the Sheins and the guests first make fun of Zheltkov. Vasily Lvovich even has a funny story about this in his home magazine called “Princess Vera and the Telegraph Operator in Love”. People tend not to think about other people's feelings. Sheins were not bad, callous, soulless (this is proved by a metamorphosis in them after meeting Zheltkov), they simply did not believe that the love that the official confessed could exist ..

There are many symbolic elements in the work. For example, a garnet bracelet. Garnet is a stone of love, anger and blood. If a person in a fever takes it in his hand (a parallel with the expression “love fever”), then the stone will take on a more saturated shade. According to Zheltkov himself, this special type of pomegranate (green pomegranate) endows women with the gift of foresight, and protects men from violent death. Zheltkov, having parted with the charm bracelet, dies, and Vera unexpectedly predicts his death.

Another symbolic stone - pearls - also appears in the work. Vera receives pearl earrings as a gift from her husband on the morning of her name day. Pearls, despite their beauty and nobility, are an omen of bad news.
Something bad also tried to predict the weather. On the eve of the fateful day, a terrible storm broke out, but on the birthday everything calmed down, the sun came out and the weather was calm, like a calm before a deafening peal of thunder and an even stronger storm.

Problems of the story

The key problem of the work is the question “What is true love?” In order for the “experiment” to be pure, the author cites different types of “loves”. This is the tender love-friendship of the Sheins, and the prudent, convenient love of Anna Friesse for her indecently rich old husband, who blindly adores his soul mate, and the long-forgotten ancient love of General Amosov, and the all-consuming love-worship of Zheltkov to Vera.

The main character herself for a long time cannot understand - this is love or madness, but looking into his face, even if hidden by the mask of death, she is convinced that it was love. Vasily Lvovich draws the same conclusions when he meets his wife's admirer. And if at first he was somewhat belligerent, then later he could not be angry with the unfortunate one, because, it seems, a secret was revealed to him, which neither he, nor Vera, nor their friends could comprehend.

People are inherently selfish and even in love, they first of all think about their feelings, masking their own egocentrism from the other half and even themselves. True love, which occurs between a man and a woman once in a hundred years, puts the beloved in the first place. So Zheltkov calmly lets Vera go, because only in this way will she be happy. The only problem is that without it, he does not need life. In his world, suicide is a perfectly natural step.

Princess Sheina understands this. She sincerely mourns Zheltkov, a man whom she practically did not know, but, my God, perhaps true love passed by her, which occurs once in a hundred years.

“I am infinitely grateful to you just for the fact that you exist. I checked myself - this is not a disease, not a manic idea - this is love, which God was pleased to reward me for something ... Leaving, I say in delight: “Hallowed be Your name”

Place in literature: Literature of the 20th century → Russian literature of the 20th century → Works of Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin → The story "Garnet Bracelet" (1910)

Name A.I. Kuprin was glorified by such works as "Olesya", "Shulamith", "Duel", "White Poodle", "Garnet Bracelet". The story "Garnet Bracelet" (1907) is a classic of Russian love prose of the 20th century. It fully reflects the writer's ideas about love, as well as his views on society and contemporaries.
The work is based on the story of a deep and strong feeling of an insignificant official Zheltkov for Princess Vera Nikolaevna Sheina. This feeling, described in the story, turns it into a true work of art, a real hymn to high and bright love.
Of course, in the "Garnet Bracelet" the leading theme is the love theme. The author considers it in different aspects, and all the problems of the work are connected with it. The essence of love, the attitude towards it in the modern writer's society, the ability to love, the significance of this feeling in a person's life - this is the range of issues that Kuprin covers.
The writer shows the outwardly prosperous, but internally completely empty life of the Russian nobility. Princess Vera Nikolaevna, her husband, sister, brother - they are all, in their essence, deeply unhappy people. Perfectly brought up and educated, freely discussing high topics, they, nevertheless, do not know how to live a full life, they do not know how to translate their reasoning into practice. All this comes from the fact, according to Kuprin, that contemporary people have forgotten how to love. And this concerns, first of all, the nobility.
The Shein family - Prince Vasily Lvovich and his wife Vera Nikolaevna - would seem to be an exemplary family. But the writer immediately tells us that there is no love between these people. The cold beauty Princess Vera respects her husband, considers him her friend, but nothing more. Once upon a time, these people were connected by a feeling, but all this remained in the past: “... the former passionate love for her husband has long since turned into a feeling of strong, faithful, true friendship ...” I think Vasily Lvovich experienced approximately the same feelings for his beautiful wife .
Unhappy in love and the sister of Vera Nikolaevna, Anna Nikolaevna Friesse. Kuprin notes that she was the exact opposite of Princess Vera: temperamental, noisy, cheerful, loving life. But this woman also felt the emptiness of her existence - she did not have true love: she did not love her husband, and numerous novels did not bring happiness to the woman.
In the description of the Friesse family, the following detail is important: the children of Anna Nikolaevna were in poor health, ill with scrofula. I think this is largely due to the fact that they were born without love.
The brother of Vera Nikolaevna and Anna Nikolaevna - Nikolai Nikolaevich - was generally a convinced bachelor and looked at love somewhat haughtily, mockingly and contemptuously. I think this feeling was not included in his system of values at all.
What, according to Kuprin, explained this state of affairs? The writer believed that the attitude towards love in society as a whole had changed. People stopped attaching importance to this feeling, choosing other priorities for themselves. But human nature is so arranged that it cannot do without love, the soul of everyone strives to experience this feeling at least for a short time. It is with him that our divine essence is connected - our soul.
The attitude to love in modern society for Kuprin is accurately characterized by the words of General Anosov, an old family friend of Vera Nikolaevna. This elderly man symbolizes the older generation, wiser, and appreciating, in spite of everything, love: "... people's love has taken such vulgar forms and has descended simply to some kind of everyday convenience, to a little entertainment." Anosov, and along with him, I think, Kuprin, believes that men are to blame for this state of affairs: “Men are to blame, jaded at twenty years old, with chicken bodies and hare souls, incapable of strong desires, heroic deeds, tenderness and adoration before love. And then the general continues: “They say that all this happened before. And if it didn’t happen, then didn’t the best minds and souls of mankind dream and yearn for it - poets, novelists, musicians, artists?
And now, in the lives of the heroes, confirmation of just such a sublime, spiritualized, bright, pure love appears. She was awarded from above to the poor official Zheltkov, who fell in love with Vera Nikolaevna. Love became for this man the meaning of life, and Princess Sheina turned into an inaccessible deity.
It is important that Zheltkov never sought Vera Nikolaevna's reciprocity - the difference in their social status was too great. It was enough for him just to look at this woman, to breathe the same air with her.
As a sign of his feelings, this man gave the princess a garnet bracelet - the most expensive thing he had. This bracelet has become for Zheltkov and everyone around him a symbol of pure disinterested feeling, true love, which is so scarce in this world and which everyone needs so much.
At the end of the story, Zheltkov passes away. The husband and brother of Vera Nikolaevna ask him to leave the princess alone - they see in the love of a simple official an insult to their family, their family honor. Zheltkov promises to do this and commits suicide, not knowing how to live without Vera Nikolaevna, not imagining the meaning of his existence without her. In a farewell letter, this man blesses and deifies the princess: “Leaving, I say in delight: “Hallowed be thy name.”
Thus, in Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet" the problems associated with the theme of love are revealed. The author shows that love is the most necessary and wonderful feeling on earth, but it is very rare in the contemporary writer's society. However, because of this, love is valued even more, turning into a short but precious moment of life. These moments are like grenades in the bracelet of the official Zheltkov, who gave his life to his beloved woman, sanctified her dull and gray existence with the divine light of high feeling.

Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin is a Russian writer who, without a doubt, can be attributed to the classics. His books are still recognizable and loved by the reader, not only under the compulsion of a school teacher, but at a conscious age. A distinctive feature of his work is documentary, his stories were based on real events or real events became the impetus for their creation - among them is the story "Garnet Bracelet".

“Garnet Bracelet” is a real story that Kuprin heard from friends while viewing family albums. The governor's wife made sketches for letters sent to her by a certain telegraph official who was unrequitedly in love with her. Once she received a gift from him: a gilded chain with a pendant in the shape of an Easter egg. Alexander Ivanovich took this story as the basis for his work, turning these meager, uninteresting data into a touching story. The writer replaced the chain with the pendant with a bracelet with five grenades, which, according to King Solomon in one story, mean anger, passion and love.

Plot

The "Garnet Bracelet" begins with preparations for the celebration, when Vera Nikolaevna Sheina suddenly receives a gift from an unknown person: a bracelet in which five garnets adorned with green splashes. On a paper note that was attached to the gift, it is indicated that the gem is able to endow the owner with foresight. The princess shares the news with her husband and shows a bracelet from an unknown person. In the course of the action, it turns out that this person is a petty official named Zheltkov. For the first time, he saw Vera Nikolaevna in the circus many years ago, and since then, suddenly flared feelings have not faded away: even the threats of her brother do not stop him. Nevertheless, Zheltkov does not want to torment his beloved, and he decides to commit suicide so as not to bring shame on her.

The story ends with the realization of the strength of the sincere feelings of a stranger, which comes to Vera Nikolaevna.

Love Theme

The main theme of the work "Garnet Bracelet" is, of course, the theme of unrequited love. Moreover, Zheltkov is a vivid example of disinterested, sincere, sacrificial feelings that he does not betray, even when his loyalty cost his life. Princess Sheina also fully feels the power of these emotions: years later she realizes that she wants to be loved and love again - and the jewelry presented by Zheltkov marks the imminent emergence of passion. Indeed, soon she falls in love with life again and feels it in a new way. you can read on our website.

The theme of love in the story is frontal and permeates the entire text: this love is high and pure, a manifestation of God. Vera Nikolaevna feels internal changes even after Zheltkov's suicide - she knew the sincerity of a noble feeling and readiness to sacrifice herself for the sake of someone who would not give anything in return. Love changes the character of the whole story: the princess's feelings die, wither, fall asleep, being once passionate and hot, and turned into a strong friendship with her husband. But Vera Nikolaevna in her soul still continues to strive for love, even if it became dull over time: she needed time to let passion and sensuality come out, but before that her calmness could seem indifferent and cold - this puts a high wall for Zheltkov.

Main characters (characteristic)

  1. Zheltkov worked as a minor official in the control chamber (the author placed him there to emphasize that the main character was a small person). Kuprin does not even indicate his name in the work: only the letters are signed with initials. Zheltkov is exactly what the reader imagines as a low-ranking person: thin, pale-skinned, straightening his jacket with nervous fingers. He has delicate features, blue eyes. According to the story, Zheltkov is about thirty years old, he is not rich, modest, decent and noble - even the husband of Vera Nikolaevna notes this. The elderly mistress of his room says that for all the eight years that he lived with her, he became like a family to her, and he was a very sweet interlocutor. “... Eight years ago I saw you in a circus in a box, and then in the first second I said to myself: I love her because there is nothing like her in the world, there is nothing better ...”, - this is how the modern fairy tale about Zheltkov's feelings for Vera Nikolaevna, although he never cherished hopes that they would be mutual: "... seven years of hopeless and polite love ...". He knows the address of his beloved, what she does, where she spends time, what she wears - he admits that nothing but her is interesting and joyful to him. you can also find it on our website.
  2. Vera Nikolaevna Sheina inherited her mother's appearance: a tall, stately aristocrat with a proud face. Her character is strict, uncomplicated, calm, she is polite and courteous, kind to everyone. She has been married to Prince Vasily Shein for more than six years, together they are full-fledged members of high society, arrange balls and receptions, despite financial difficulties.
  3. Vera Nikolaevna has a sister, the youngest, Anna Nikolaevna Friesse, who, unlike her, inherited her father's features and his Mongolian blood: a narrow slit in the eyes, femininity of features, flirty facial expressions. Her character is frivolous, perky, cheerful, but contradictory. Her husband, Gustav Ivanovich, is rich and stupid, but idolizes her and is constantly nearby: his feelings, it seems, have not changed from the first day, he courted her and still adored her very much. Anna Nikolaevna cannot stand her husband, but they have a son and a daughter, she is faithful to him, although she is quite contemptuous.
  4. General Anosov is Anna's godfather, his full name is Yakov Mikhailovich Anosov. He is fat and tall, good-natured, patient, does not hear well, he has a large, red face with clear eyes, he is very respected for the years of his service, he is fair and courageous, he has a clear conscience, constantly wears a frock coat and cap, uses a hearing horn and a stick.
  5. Prince Vasily Lvovich Shein is the husband of Vera Nikolaevna. Little is said about his appearance, only that he has blond hair and a big head. He is very soft, compassionate, sensitive - he treats Zheltkov's feelings with understanding, unshakably calm. He has a sister, a widow, whom he invites to the celebration.
  6. Features of Kuprin's creativity

Kuprin was close to the theme of the character's awareness of the truth of life. He saw the world around him in a special way and strove to learn something new, his works are characterized by drama, some anxiety, excitement. "Cognitive pathos" - this is called the hallmark of his work.

In many ways, Dostoevsky influenced Kuprin's work, especially in the early stages, when he writes about fatal and significant moments, the role of chance, the psychology of characters' passion - often the writer makes it clear that not everything can be understood.

It can be said that one of the features of Kuprin's work is a dialogue with readers, in which the plot is traced and reality is depicted - this is especially noticeable in his essays, which in turn were influenced by G. Uspensky.

Some of his works are famous for their lightness and immediacy, poetization of reality, naturalness and naturalness. Others - the theme of inhumanity and protest, the struggle for feelings. At some point, he becomes interested in history, antiquity, legends, and this is how fantastic stories are born with the motives of the inevitability of chance and fate.

    Genre and composition

Kuprin is characterized by love for stories within stories. The “Garnet Bracelet” is another proof: Zheltkov’s note about the qualities of the jewelry is the plot in the plot.

The author shows love from different points of view - love in general terms and Zheltkov's unrequited feelings. These feelings have no future: the marital status of Vera Nikolaevna, the difference in social status, circumstances - everything is against them. In this doom, the subtle romanticism invested by the writer in the text of the story is manifested.

The whole work is ringed by references to the same piece of music - Beethoven's sonata. So the music, "sounding" throughout the story, shows the power of love and is the key to understanding the text, resounding in the final lines. Music communicates the unsaid. Moreover, it is Beethoven's sonata at the climax that symbolizes the awakening of the soul of Vera Nikolaevna and the realization that comes to her. Such attention to melody is also a manifestation of romanticism.

The composition of the story implies the presence of symbols and hidden meanings. So a fading garden implies the fading passion of Vera Nikolaevna. General Anosov tells short stories about love - these are also small plots within the main narrative.

It is difficult to determine the genre of the "Garnet Bracelet". In fact, the work is called a story, largely due to its composition: it consists of thirteen short chapters. However, the writer himself called "Garnet Bracelet" a story.

Interesting? Save it on your wall!

Love is an extraordinary feeling, which, unfortunately, is not given to every person to know. The topic of today's article is Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet". The meaning of the title is deeper than it might seem. at first sight. What is the theme of the story? What does the decoration given to the main character symbolize?

"Garnet bracelet": content

The refined countess once fell in love with an inconspicuous telegraph operator. He did not seek meetings with her, was not intrusive, only the letters that the secular beauty received occasionally spoke of his feelings. On her name day, the princess received pearl earrings as a gift from her husband. It was a sophisticated, exquisite gift. And in the evening, the messenger handed the maid a small square box with the words "Pass it personally into the hands of the mistress." It contained a garnet bracelet.

The meaning of the title of Kuprin's story is quite simple to explain. The unrequitedly in love telegraph operator once nevertheless realized that his languor would not lead to anything good. He wrote several more letters to the princess, and to one of them he attached an ornament made of low-grade gold and poorly polished stones. This gift caused indignation among the relatives of the main character.

The husband and brother of the princess went to the telegraph operator in order to stop the series of love letters that threatened the reputation of the noble family. They succeeded. The telegraph operator committed suicide. And only after his death, the princess realized that love had happened in her life, which millions of women dream of, but which men are no longer capable of.

What is the meaning of the name "Garnet Bracelet"? The telegraph operator could have given the princess earrings made of turquoise or, however, Kuprin preferred that his heroine receive from her admirer an ornament made of stones of bright red color - the color of love. The meaning of the name "Garnet Bracelet" should be sought in the symbolism of precious stones. Pomegranate has always been associated with love, fidelity, passion.

So the telegrapher died. The princess realized that she would never meet a person who would love her so selflessly. This is the summary of The Pomegranate Bracelet. The plot of the work, however, is not so simple. It has many more characters. In addition, Kuprin's story is filled with symbols.

Vera Sheina

This is the name of the main character of Alexander Ivanovich Kuprin's story "Garnet Bracelet". She is beautiful, educated, moderately arrogant. Vera Sheina has no children, but she has a smart, kind, understanding husband. Vasily - leader nobility. The relationship of the spouses has long become more friendly. There is no passion between them. And has she ever been?

In order to reveal the theme of love in "Garnet Bracelet", you should talk about how the heroine treated her fan. His name was Zheltkov. He sent letters to the princess not for a year or two. Even seven years before the events described in the story, he overcame Vera. Then he fell silent for a long time. And only on the day of the name day he reminded her of himself again. Vera opened a small package and found a bracelet in it. Like all women, she first drew attention to the decoration, and only then to the letter. "Ah, it's him again," thought the princess. Zheltkov only irritated her.

Deep down, Vera Sheina dreams of passionate love. But like millions of women on earth, this feeling is not familiar to her. True love passed her by in the form of an unremarkable telegraph operator. About how great was the feeling of the unfortunate Zheltkov, the princess realized only after his death.

General Anosov

This is a minor character. But without him, the theme of love in "Garnet Bracelet" would not have been fully revealed. At the time of the publication of the story, Kuprin had already overcome the forty-year milestone. He was not old, but, probably, sad thoughts about the departed youth sometimes visited him. For the writer, the main theme of creativity was love. He, as already mentioned, believed that not everyone is capable of this feeling. And quite rarely, according to the prose writer, it was found among the last representatives of the Russian nobility.

General Anosov in the story expresses the point of view of the author. He is from the older generation. It is the general who helps the princess appreciate Zheltkov's feelings. It was after a conversation with him that Vera took a different look at the love of a telegraph operator. In Anosov, unlike other guests present at Sheina's name day, the story of the unfortunate author of love letters did not cause a smile, but rather admiration.

A significant role in revealing the love theme in "Garnet Bracelet" was played by the stories told by the old general. He told the young woman about two incidents that happened many years ago in the garrison where he served. These were love stories that ended very tragically.

Anna

The author gives a fairly detailed description of the characters who are not directly related to the main storyline. This is what gives the right to call "Garnet Bracelet" a story, not a story. Anna is Vera's sister. This is a young, attractive woman who is deprived of true love in the same way as the main character. But unlike Vera, she is a very passionate person. Anna constantly flirts with young officers, attends dinner parties, and carefully monitors her appearance. She does not love her husband, and therefore cannot be happy.

The image of a garnet bracelet

It is worth saying a few more words about the main "character" of Kuprin's story. Namely, the garnet bracelet. Zheltkov is a modest employee. He does not have money for an expensive gift for his beloved woman. The garnet bracelet once belonged to his great-grandmother. Zheltkov's mother was the last to wear this decoration.

The stones from the old bracelet were transferred to a new one, made of gold, although low-grade. He probably saved up for a long time for a gift to the princess. But the point, of course, is not the cost of this decoration. Zheltkov gave the princess the most precious thing - a bracelet that belonged to her mother.

Last letter

Kuprin's story about the tragedy of a lonely man who loves a woman who will never reciprocate. After a conversation with the brother of the princess, the telegraph operator wrote the last, suicide letter. And then he committed suicide. After his death, Vera asked pianist Jenny Reiter to play Beethoven's symphony, which Zheltkov loved so much. When she listened to this amazing music, she suddenly realized: he forgave her.

Garnet bracelet

for many years, Kuprin was looking for the ideal of love in real conditions. Among the ordinary, he observed the refined experiences of people who are able to remain gratefully faithful to their chosen one. The discrepancy between the desired and the existing was overcome in the most original way, Kuprin abandoned the option of happy, perfect love. But this feeling itself, absolutized in one soul, made it a stimulus for the rebirth of another. This is how one of the most chaste works appeared - ʼʼGarnet Braceletʼʼ (1911).

The rarest gift of high and unrequited love became ʼʼhuge happinessʼʼ, the only content, the poetry of Zheltkov's life. The phenomenality of his experiences raises the image of a young man above all other characters in the story. Not only the rude, narrow-minded Tuganovsky, the frivolous coquette Anna, but also the smart, conscientious Shein, who considers love to be the ʼʼgreatest secretʼʼ Anosov, the beautiful and pure Vera Nikolaevna herself are in a clearly reduced household environment. At the same time, it is not in this contrast that the main nerve of the story is hidden.

From the first lines there is a feeling of withering. It is read in the autumn landscape, in the sad form of empty dachas with broken windows, empty flower beds, with ʼʼas if degeneratedʼʼ, small roses, in the ʼʼherbaceous, sad smellʼʼ of pre-winter. Similar to autumn nature is the monotonous, as it were, drowsy existence of Vera Sheina, where habitual relationships, convenient connections and skills have strengthened. Kuprin writes not about the birth of Vera's love, but about the awakening of her soul. It flows in a refined sphere of forebodings, acute experiences. The external flow of days goes on as usual: guests come to Vera’s name day, her husband with irony tells them about his wife’s strange admirer, matures and then the plan of visiting Shein and Vera’s brother Tuganovsky Zheltkov is carried out, at this meeting the young man is invited to leave the city where he lives Faith, but he decides to completely leave this life and leaves. All events respond with the growing spiritual tension of the heroine.

The psychological climax of the story is Vera's farewell to the deceased Zheltkov, their only "date" - a turning point in her inner state. The greatness of suffering and peace in the feeling that caused them - this has never been experienced by Vera herself. ʼʼAt that moment, she realized that the love that every woman dreams of has passed her by.ʼʼ. Former complacency is perceived as a mistake, an illness.

Kuprin endows his beloved heroine with much greater spiritual powers than those that caused her disappointment in herself. In the final chapter, Vera's excitement reaches its limit. To the sounds of Beethoven's sonata - Zheltkov bequeathed to listen to it - Vera, as it were, takes into her heart everything that he endured. Accepts and anew, in tears of repentance and enlightenment, experiences ʼʼlife, which humbly and joyfully doomed itself to torment, suffering and deathʼʼ. Now this life will forever remain with her and for her.

The process of rare complexity and secrecy is contained in the ʼʼGarnet Braceletʼʼ. The writer nevertheless refuses to convey the detailed thoughts of the heroine, and from his own direct thoughts about her. Surprisingly chaste, he touches the refined human soul and at the same time conveys in detail the appearance and behavior of other characters in the story. And yet, from the first words, the approaching shocks of Vera Sheyna are foreseen. This impression is created as if by an objectified description, saturated, however, with associations with some dangerous phenomena.

ʼʼDisgusting weatherʼʼ brings cold, hurricane winds, and then come lovely sunny days that please Vera Sheina. Unnecessarily, summer has returned, ĸᴏᴛᴏᴩᴏᴇ will again retreat before a formidable hurricane. And the calm joy of Vera is no less fleeting. ʼʼThe infinity and grandeur of the expanse of the seaʼʼ, which attract the eyes of Vera and her sister Anna, are separated from them by a terrible cliff, frightening both. So the ʼʼbreakʼʼ of the quiet family well-being of the Sheins is predicted.

The writer tells in detail about Vera's birthday chores, Anna's gift, the arrival of guests, conveys Shein's humorous stories with which he entertains the audience ... The unhurried narration is often interrupted by warning signs. Vera, with an unpleasant sensation, is convinced that thirteen people are sitting at the table - an unlucky number. At the height of the card game, the maid brings Zheltkov's letter and a bracelet with five grenades - five "thick red live fires". ʼʼJust like bloodʼʼ, Vera thinks ʼʼwith unexpected anxietyʼʼ. Gradually the author prepares for the main theme of the story.

The experiences of the Faith in their culmination and resolution are embodied laconically, but with sharp expression. It is achieved by an expressive association of what is happening with the music of one of the parts of Beethoven's second sonata (also included in the epigraph of the ʼʼGarnet Braceletʼʼ). The merging of Vera's thoughts with sounds makes it possible to naturally express the sublime prayerful state of the soul, as if to convey Zheltkov's voice. And the participation of the heroine of flowers, trees, a light breeze enlightens the tears of a woman, as if blessing her for the faithful memory of the deceased. The most elusive human feelings are indirectly captured.
