The history of the Nizhny Novgorod circus is rich in events, its origins go back to the distant past. In many literary sources, one can find references to circus performers, grandfather barkers, wandering acrobats, guide bears and other pioneers of circus art.

In the summer of 1879, the brothers Peter and Akim Nikitin arrived in Nizhny Novgorod. They received permission to start building a booth. And the merit of creating the first Russian professional, permanent circus, of course, belongs to the Nikitin brothers. Even then, the first Russian circus stood on a par with the largest foreign enterprises.

In 1813, at the Makaryevskaya Fair, in addition to the theater, a circus was opened annually, located in the Lubochny booth ("Hunters to the horse lists"): "Everyone gathered there! Some kind of horsewoman distinguished herself there - the Italian Kiriane. The theater did not take away her income. Many managed to to look at both. And the arena (circus) was also filled. " They also showed bears to bring, camels, monkeys, buffoons, dancers on a tightrope immediately danced.

In 1817, at the Nizhny Novgorod fair, there was a circus-booth, where magicians, dancers, bear cubs from Sergach, dancers on ropes performed.

In 1879, the tradesman Pyotr Alexandrovich Nikitin received from the Nizhny Novgorod fair office for a place for the circus 2000 square meters. sazhen on Staro-Samakatnaya Square, where he put up a booth and gave circus performances.

Then, having accumulated money, the Nikitins set about building a wooden stationary circus in Nizhny Novgorod. And on July 28, 1883, the first performance took place.

Extract from the newspaper "Nizhny Novgorod Fair" No. 15, dated July 29, 1883:
“Yesterday, July 28, the Nikitin brothers’ circus opened; its construction and decoration, given the short season, are very good; the circus is quite extensive, the places are convenient. As for the performers, they leave nothing to be desired for the fair circus the best: there are excellent riders and riders, excellently trained horses and not bad clowns.

Later, due to the growth of Nizhny Novgorod, it became necessary to expand the circus. And the Nikitins begin the construction of a stone stationary circus, which received the first spectators on July 26, 1886. It was the first stone building of the Nikitin circus in Russia - in Nizhny Novgorod - a room for spectators for 2000 people.

Extract from the newspaper "Nizhny Novgorod Fair" No. 6, dated July 20, 1887:
"The large, luxuriously arranged, stone circus of the Nikitin brothers.

... a great performance with a troupe of first-class artists and a corps de ballet; the troupe consists of up to 100 persons and 80 horses. The building of the circus, for the first time in Russia, is illuminated by electric incandescent lamps and large lanterns. Director - V. Sur, directors - br. Nikitin".

Since 1883, all the great artists worked in Nizhny Novgorod: Chinizelli, Truzzi, Solomonsky, Gamsakhurdia, Krasilnikov, Nikitin, etc., as well as many foreign circuses.

In 1923, the Nizhny Novgorod Circus of the Nikitin Brothers came under the jurisdiction of the CUGC and became the third state circus in the country. In 1925 the building burned down. On August 5, 1926, a new circus, one of the largest in the USSR, was opened in the working area of Kanavino.

A new important period in the history of the Nizhny Novgorod circus was the start of operation on April 21, 1964 of a new stone building for 1719 seats. From the very beginning, a lot of creative and organizational work was carried out here, which was headed by I. Marinin

On May 27, 1984, a circus performance dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Gorky-Nizhny Novgorod circus was held in the old (Gorky) circus. After him, the circus was closed for reconstruction. The director of the anniversary performance, closing it with his number "Elephants and Tigers", was the People's Artist of the RSFSR Mstislav Zapashny. M. Zapashny handed over the symbolic key to the new circus to the director of the circus, IP Marinin, with the words "We will open it soon." At the last performance, at the closing of the old circus, the Gorky residents gathered with a special feeling of hope for a speedy meeting.

The reconstruction process was successfully launched, but its progress was interrupted by the change in the political situation in the country. For 23 years, Nizhny Novgorod residents have lost high-quality, highly artistic performances.

September 1, 2007 Nizhny Novgorod became the city of Russia, which opened the largest circus complex in Europe. Nizhny Novgorod residents have been waiting for this grand event for 23 years.

Today, the Nizhny Novgorod Circus is a huge complex covering an area of 30,000 square meters. The circus has a large stable for 37 stalls, separate rooms for marine animals, predators, elephants, dogs, monkeys, a large modern veterinary clinic, a utility yard for vehicles, where animals can be unloaded under a roof in any weather conditions.

The Nizhny Novgorod circus is designed for 2000 seats, there are special places for wheelchair users. Light, sound, film projection, laser projection, video surveillance system meet the most modern requirements. One of the most difficult elements of the circus was a spectacular retractable staircase that connects the stage with a large arena. The Nizhny Novgorod State Circus takes into account everything that visitors may need for a full-fledged perception of a circus performance!

History of the circus

The Nizhny Novgorod circus began its historical countdown on July 28, 1883. On this day, the doors of not the first stationary structure in Russia, built by the Nikitin brothers for circus performances, were opened for the audience. Prior to this, only temporary booths were installed in the city, dismantled immediately after the end of fairs and festivities.

Literally three years later, instead of a small wooden building, the Nikitins built a new stone circus. It received its first visitors on July 26, 1886. At that time, the hall was considered huge, as it could accommodate up to two thousand spectators alone. Almost 40 years later, there was a severe fire, as a result of which the building was badly damaged. But only a year later (in 1926) a similar facility was erected in the Zarechny district of the city - Kanavino. Then the circus became one of the largest in the country.

A new stone building for 1719 seats appeared in 1964, and in 1984, after the 100th anniversary performance of the circus, it was closed for restoration. It was assumed that the work would be completed quickly, but due to the difficult economic situation provoked by the collapse of the USSR, they continued with varying success for 23 years.

Modern circus complex

The grand opening of the renovated Nizhny Novgorod Circus took place in 2007. Today, a huge cultural and entertainment facility is considered the largest not only in Russia, but throughout Europe. It covers an area of 30 thousand square meters and includes:

  • a modern veterinary clinic that fully meets the needs of the circus;
