The front suspension is independent, MacPherson type, providing high levels of vehicle smoothness, stability and controllability, with telescopic shock absorber struts that serve to dampen vibrations, absorb shocks and shocks acting on the vehicle through its wheels.

The shock absorber struts include elastic elements - springs, which prevent the wheels from separating from the road, providing constant traction and preventing the body from swinging, which accordingly affects the safety and comfort of movement.

A hub assembly is attached to the lower part of the front suspension shock absorber strut, which is the basis for mounting the wheels and brakes.

The hub assembly is connected to the subframe through a ball joint and a transverse lever, and the subframe is connected to the car body.

Also, the Ford Focus 2 front suspension is equipped with a stabilizer bar designed to increase stability and reduce body roll angles during cornering and road irregularities by transferring compression or tension forces from one rack to another.

1 - lever; 2 - ball bearing; 3 - rotary fist; 4 - shock absorber; 5 - anti-roll bar; 6 - bar of the anti-roll bar; 7 - subframe

The basis of the front suspension is two shock absorber struts that allow the front wheels to move up and down when driving through bumps and at the same time dampen body vibrations.

A steering knuckle is attached to the lower part of the strut housing, and a bracket for attaching the anti-roll bar strut is welded to the middle part.

A hydraulic gas-filled shock absorber is installed in the rack housing. A polyurethane foam compression stroke buffer is located on the shock absorber rod, designed to limit the upward travel of the wheel when the car moves over bumps.

The helical coil spring of the shock absorber strut with its lower coil rests on the lower cup welded to the strut body, and the upper coil (of reduced diameter) rests on the centering sleeve fixed on the shock absorber rod together with the strut upper support.

The upper support of the strut, resting against the cup of the mudguard of the body, due to its elasticity, makes it possible for the strut to swing during the suspension strokes and does not transmit high-frequency vibrations to the body.

Thrust bearing, located between the upper spring seat and the upper strut mount, allows the shock strut with the spring to rotate with the steered wheel.

Braking and traction forces during the movement of the car are perceived by the suspension arms connected through ball bearings to the steering knuckles, and through silent blocks to the suspension subframe.

The ball joint housing is riveted to the arm with three rivets, and the ball joint pin is attached to the steering knuckle with a tapered joint. The subframe is attached to the spars at four points through silent blocks (pressed into the holes of the subframe).

The hub bearing, hub and steering knuckle of the Ford Focus 2 front suspension are a non-separable unit, so if it malfunctions, replace the entire unit. The anti-roll bar is made of spring steel.

The rod in its middle part is attached to the suspension subframe with brackets through two rubber cushions. Both ends of the rod through the ball joints of the struts of the anti-roll bar are attached to the bodies of the shock absorber struts.

To ensure good stability and controllability of the car, the front wheels are set at certain angles relative to the body and suspension elements.

Toe-in is the angle between the plane of rotation of the wheel and the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Wheel alignment contributes to the correct position of the steered wheels at various speeds and angles of rotation of the car.

Signs of deviation of the toe angle from the norm: strong sawtooth wear of tires in the transverse direction, increased fuel consumption due to high rolling resistance of the front wheels.

The convergence of the wheels of the car is regulated by the rotation of the steering rods with the lock nuts of the steering rod ends unscrewed.

The pitch angle of the steering axis is the angle between the vertical and the line passing through the centers of rotation of the ball joint and the bearing of the upper support of the shock absorber strut in a plane parallel to the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.

It helps to stabilize the steered wheels in the direction rectilinear motion.

Symptoms of angle deviation from the norm - car pulling to the side while driving, different efforts on the steering wheel in the left and right turns, one-sided wear of the tire tread.

Camber is the angle between the plane of rotation of the wheel and the vertical. It contributes to the correct position of the rolling wheel when the front suspension is working.

With a strong deviation of this angle from the norm, the car can be pulled away from rectilinear movement and one-sided wear of the tread. Only the toe angle is adjustable.

The angle of camber and the angle of longitudinal inclination of the axis of rotation of the wheel are set constructively by the geometry of the parts of the suspension and car body.

In operation, these angles are not subject to adjustment. It is recommended to check and adjust the wheel alignment angles at a service station.

Before adjusting the wheels must be set to the position of the rectilinear movement of the car. The car must be installed on a horizontal platform.

The fuel tank, windshield washer reservoir, etc. must be full, the spare wheel is in its original place. There must be no foreign objects in the cabin and trunk.

Replacement of pillows of a bar of the anti-roll bar of a forward suspension bracket

We change the rubber pads for attaching the anti-roll bar to the subframe of the Ford Focus 2 front suspension in case of breaks and significant wear of the pads, as a result of which there is a play in the connection of parts.

The elements of fastening the stabilizer bar to the subframe are located in hard-to-reach places - between the subframe and the body. Therefore, the manufacturer recommends replacing the cushions with the subframe removed from the vehicle.

In this case, you have to perform many complex operations to dismantle the subframe. In order to reduce the complexity of operations, we suggest that the subframe not be completely dismantled, but slightly lowered, providing access to the attachment points of the Ford Focus 2 front suspension stabilizer bar.

To do this, we substitute an adjustable stop under the subframe, unscrew the rear and loosen the front bolts securing the subframe to the body. We lower the back of the subframe on the stop by 60-70 mm.

With a wrench or head, unscrew the two bolts securing the stabilizer bar bracket to the subframe. Remove the bracket with a screwdriver. Remove the split rubber cushion.

The slit in the cushion should face towards the front of the vehicle, with the lip on the right side in the direction of travel. On the new cushion, it is painted yellow.

Similarly, we dismantle the bracket and rubber cushion on the other side of the stabilizer bar. We remove the anti-roll bar for replacement if it is deformed or broken.

To dismantle the bar, disconnect the anti-roll bars from it and remove the brackets for attaching the bar to the subframe.

Remove the front suspension cushions of the exhaust system. We unscrew the four bolts with the head and dismantle the removable floor cross member.

The cross member and cushions will interfere with the removal of the stabilizer bar. Remove the anti-roll bar. We mount the bar
anti-roll bar in reverse order.

We install new pillows on the bar and fasten the bar to the subframe and to the stabilizer struts. We tighten the bolts for fastening the brackets of the rod and the nuts for fastening the fingers of the ball joints of the stabilizer struts to the prescribed torques.

Removing the front suspension arm Ford Focus 2

We remove the lever to replace the ball joint or the lever itself if it is deformed, there are cracks in the metal, as well as in case of damage (tears, rubber peeling) or significant wear of its silent blocks. The work is shown on the left lever, the right lever is removed in the same way.

We remove the wheel and securely fix the car on a factory-made stand. Remove the dirt shield from the engine compartment. We clean the lever from dirt, and moisten the threaded connections with a penetrating liquid.

We unscrew the nut of the Ford Focus 2 ball joint pin. Pulling the lever down, we strike the steering knuckle eye with a hammer. Be careful not to damage the protective cover of the ball joint. Remove the ball joint pin.

Disconnecting the ball joint with a puller may require the removal of the ball joint boot thermal shield. To do this, remove the brake disc.

We unscrew the bolt securing the protective thermal shield of the anther of the ball joint and remove the thermal shield. Using a wrench, unscrew the nut securing the ball joint pin. In order not to damage the thread of the ball joint pin, unscrew the nut to the desired height and install the puller.

After pressing out the pin, unscrew the nut to the end. If necessary, keep your finger from turning with a hexagon. Remove the ball joint pin from the steering knuckle eye. We unscrew the bolt securing the front silent block of the lever to the subframe and remove the bolt.

Using the head, unscrew the bolts securing the rear silent block of the lever to the subframe. Remove the front suspension arm. To replace the ball joint, we fix the lever in a vice. Using a drill, we drill out the heads of three rivets that fasten the body of the ball joint to the lever.

We knock out the rivets with a beard and take out the ball joint from the lever. We fasten the new ball joint to the lever with suitable M10 nuts and M10x30 mm bolts. Tighten the nuts with a torque of at least 70 Nm.

Install the front suspension arm in reverse order. We wrap the nut securing the ball joint pin, holding the pin from turning with a hexagon.

Install the wheel and remove the car from the stand. We swing the front of the car several times so that all suspension units take up their working position.

The final tightening of the front bolt securing the arm to the subframe is carried out with a loaded suspension with a torque of 175 Nm. We check the wheel alignment and, if necessary, adjust the toe-in of the front wheels of the car.

On Ford Focus cars, a MacPherson-type suspension is installed, that is, with a strut assembly, with an upper support and one lower arm that is attached to the body. suspension worked very well. Such a suspension can be attributed to pragmatic suspensions, with an optimal ratio of comfort, reliability and quality. However, it also breaks down over time. When sounds appear in the suspension, you should pay attention to the ball joint, upper strut support, bearing, silent blocks. It is these faults that cause extraneous noise. And now about all this in more detail ...

Ford Focus 2 suspension is reliable and durable, but problematic to repair. Often it is impossible to eliminate serious breakdowns on your own, and you have to tinker with small ones. Therefore, if you have just purchased this model, find a good service station.

On average, a serious repair of the front suspension can cost 13,000 rubles, and the rear - 23,000 rubles.

Why such difference?

Because the design of the front suspension is quite simple and common. It consists of a lever with a ball tip, a stabilizer bar, a steering tip and a suspension strut with a spring. It is of the MacPherson type.

Much more difficult is the situation with the back. It is independent, multi-link-spring (on each side there are three transverse and one trailing arm). In addition, it uses telescopic shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar.

How long are Ford Focus 2 suspension parts designed for?

1. Front

The weakest element is the silent block of the lower arm. It cannot be replaced even by a service station, because this requires expensive specialized equipment. Therefore, if it breaks, then you need to change the entire lever.

In general, the suspension arms are designed for 80-100 thousand kilometers.

Shock absorbers have the same service life. If it's time to change them, then at the same time replace the thrust bearings with them.

Steering tips and stabilizer struts are designed for 110-130 thousand kilometers.

The wheel bearing will last you about 50,000 - 60,000 km. It needs to be changed along with the hub.

2. Back

Silent blocks of the trailing arm will travel with you 80-110 thousand kilometers. And to change them, you have to disassemble the entire suspension. This is one of the reasons why repairing the rear is more expensive than the front.

  • stabilizer struts will travel 130-140 thousand kilometers;
  • and shock absorbers - 90-130 thousand kilometers.

How to check what state it is in?

The condition must be checked in a pit or overpass, lifting each wheel in turn. This should be done after every 20,000 km. mileage or if the car received a strong blow when driving through deep pits, etc.

1. We start with the wheel.

  • Unroll it with your hand. It should rotate evenly, without jamming and extraneous sounds.
  • Grasp the wheel from above and below, pull the upper part towards you, and the lower part in the opposite direction. Then do the opposite.

When you do this, there should be no play or knocks. If there is play, then ask your partner to apply the brake and check the play again.

If there is no play after this, then the hub bearing is faulty. If there is still play, then some other suspension part has failed. So let's move on.

2. Ball joints.

Take a sturdy screwdriver, insert it between the suspension arm and the steering knuckle (be careful not to damage the ball joint boot) and wring it out. If there is play, then you need to change the support.

Also, if you find that the cover is cracked, replace it.

3. Silent blocks of front and rear suspension arms Ford Focus 2.

Ford Focus 2 suspension repair- one of the frequent reasons for contacting a second-generation Ford Focus car service. Despite the excellent depreciation properties of this car, the Ford Focus 2 suspension resource still needs to be repaired after a certain time.

Ford Focus 2 Suspension Diagnostics

Suspension repair of any car begins with a diagnosis. In our car service "Ford VAO" diagnostics, as well as the subsequent repair of the Ford Focus 2 suspension, begins with lift access. The first step is to check the free play of each wheel by rotating it by hand. An experienced locksmith can use this method to determine the presence of a malfunction, similar to how an experienced doctor recognizes a heart murmur with a stethoscope.

In addition, the master loosens the wheel diagonally left-right and up-down, as well as along the wheel mounting axis, checking for backlash. With this test, you can suspect a bad wheel bearing, which will probably need to be replaced. Life time wheel bearing ranges from 50 to 80 thousand km. Often it is changed along with the hub.

Faults and suspension repair Ford Focus 2

In the front suspension Ford Focus 2 breaks down most of the time lower control arm bushing. Replacement of silent blocks Ford Focus 2- an expensive procedure that is performed on expensive equipment. Such a procedure will be more expensive than replacing the entire assembly. In other words, if the silent block of the lower arm is out of order, then the arm must also be replaced.

In the event of a malfunction rear suspension silent block For repair Ford Focus 2 You need to disassemble the rear suspension. This is the most vulnerable link in the Ford Focus 2 rear suspension.

As for the service life suspension arms, both front and rear longitudinal, then their replacement may be required after 90-100 thousand kilometers.

Life time shock absorbers is also about 100 thousand km, however, given the unsatisfactory quality of domestic expensive, this period may be somewhat reduced. If the shock absorbers break down, they cannot be repaired, but are replaced entirely. characteristic feature shock absorber malfunction is leaking oil.

Lifetime stabilizer struts- near 130 thousand km, however, given the amount of reagents and the amount of moisture that are abundant on urban roads, these rather thin elements are actively corroded and at some point simply break in half, so that the service life of this element is greatly reduced to, say, 90 thousand km. km. Therefore, if you notice while driving that the Ford Focus 2 behaves somewhat unstable in corners, a knock of the front suspension appeared during a vigorous turn - pay attention to this fact when diagnosing and repairing the Ford Focus 2 suspension.

Where to repair the Ford Focus 2 suspension?

Since the Ford Focus 2 suspension, like no other element, is responsible for traffic safety, then the repair of this system must be carried out with high quality, with guaranteed result. How to achieve this?

First, don't skimp on ford chassis repair Focus 2, that is:

  1. Contact garage services
  2. Buy cheaper parts
  3. If any malfunction is found in the suspension, refuse to repair it, guided by the principle: "for now we will train, and then we will repair it." "Later" - will be more expensive, proven by bitter experience.
  1. contacting a specialized service center ford, where qualified craftsmen with extensive experience in the repair of Ford Focus 2 cars work.
  2. Be sure to carry out repairs before running diagnostics Ford Focus 2.
  3. Don't skimp on parts.
  4. Agree to carry out all necessary repairs, without postponing for "later".
