When and why did the mention of the evil one (Satan) appear in the prayer "Our Father"?

In ancient Church Slavonic there is no evil: "... and do not lead us into attack, deliver us from enmity." Who added "onion" to the main prayer of Jesus Christ?

The Lord's Prayer, known to every Christian since childhood, is a concentrated presentation of the entire Christian doctrine. At the same time, it is one of the most perfect literary works ever recorded in writing.

This is the accepted view of the short Lord's Prayer that Jesus taught His disciples.

How is this possible? After all, many volumes were needed for a complete presentation of religious teachings in other religions. And Jesus didn't even ask His disciples to write down her every word.

Just during the Sermon on the Mount He said (Matthew 6:9:13):

“Pray like this:

Our Father, who art in heaven!

And leave us our debts,

like we leave our debtor.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

But this is not the only way to translate the Lord's Prayer into Russian. In the edition of the Gospel of 1892 that the author has, there is a slightly different version:

“Our Father who art in heaven!

hallowed be thy name; let your kingdom come;

may Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us our daily bread for this day;

and forgive us our debts;

our debtors;

and lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one;

In the modern, canonical edition of the Bible (with parallel places), we find almost the same version of the translation of the Prayer:

“Our Father who art in heaven!

hallowed be thy name; Let your kingdom come;

may Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us our daily bread this day;

and forgive us our debts;

just as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one;

In the Old Church Slavonic translation, the Prayer (if written in the modern alphabet) sounds closer to the first version:

“Our Father, who art in heaven!

May your name be hallowed! Let your kingdom come;

May Your will be done as in heaven and on earth.

Give us our daily bread today.

And leave us our debts,

as if we leave our debtor.

And do not lead us into misfortune,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

These translations use different words to denote the same concepts. “Forgive us” and “leave us”, “attack” and “temptation”, “who art in heaven” and “who is in heaven” mean the same thing.

There is no distortion of the meaning and spirit of the words given by Christ to His disciples in any of these options. But comparing them, one can come to the important conclusion that the literal transmission of the Words of Jesus is not only impossible, but not mandatory.

In the English translations of the Gospels, one can find several different versions, but all of them can be considered authentic, because in them the meaning of the Prayer and its spirit are adequately conveyed.

The Lord's Prayer became widespread immediately after the crucifixion and Resurrection of Jesus. This can be seen at least from the fact that it was found in such remote places as the city of Pompeii (that is, it was there before Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D.).

At the same time, the original text of the Lord's Prayer has not come down to us in its original form.

In translations into Russian, the Lord's Prayer sounds the same in the Gospels of Matthew (6:9-13) and Luke (11:2-4). We find the same text in the Gospels KJV (King James Version) in English.

If we take the Greek source, we will be surprised to find that the familiar words “who are in heaven”, “Thy will be done as in heaven and on earth” and “deliver us from the evil one” are absent in the Gospel of Luke.

There are many versions explaining the reasons for the disappearance of these words in the Gospel of Luke and their appearance in translations, and later in modern Greek editions of the Gospel. We will not dwell on this, for what matters to us is not the letter, but the spirit of the great Prayer.

Jesus did not command us to pray by memorizing His words literally. He simply said "Pray like this:" that is, "pray like this."

"Our Father" in Aramaic

Today in the morning I dreamed that I was walking with someone unfamiliar through the rocky desert and looking into the sun-drenched sky. Suddenly I noticed that either a carved gilded casket or a book in the same binding was rapidly approaching us.

I didn’t have time to tell my friend that it’s just like objects falling from the sky in the desert, and it’s good that it’s not on my head, when I realized that the object was flying straight at me. A second later, he crashed to my right, where my friend should have been. I was so stunned that I woke up before I looked in the direction of the unfortunate comrade.

The morning began unusually: on the Internet I came across “Our Father” in the language of Jesus. The translation from Aramaic shocked me so much that I was late for work, checking to see if it was a fake. I found that about 15 years ago, theologians had the expression "primacy of the Aramaic."

That is, as far as I understand, the Greek primary source used to be the dominant authority in theological disputes, but absurdities were noticed in it that could arise when translated from the original language. In other words, the Greek version is not primary.

The Aramaic version of the Gospel ("Peshitta", in the Edessa dialect of Aramaic) exists, but it is a translation from Greek.

True, as it turned out, not complete. And not only in the sense of the absence of some parts: there are places in it that have been preserved in an older form, since they were already written in Aramaic.

Malkuthakh is traditionally translated as a kingdom, symbolically - a fruitful hand, gardens of the earth; wisdom, purification of the ideal, making it personal for oneself; come home; Yin (creative) hypostasis of fire.

Literal: Tzevyanach translates as will, but not strength, but the desire of the heart. One of the translations is naturalness, origin, the gift of life. Aykanna means constancy, embodiment in life. Aph - personal orientation. Arha - earth, b "- means living; b" arha - a combination of form and energy, spiritualized matter.

Hawvlah lachma d "sunqanan yaomana (Official translation: Give us our daily bread for this day)

Literal: Hawvlah translates to give (gifts of the soul and gifts of the material). lachma - bread, necessary, essential for maintaining life, understanding of life (chma - growing passion, growth, increase). How Christ taught the apostles to pray

The Lord's Prayer is given in the Gospels in two versions, a longer one in the Gospel of Matthew and a shorter one in the Gospel of Luke. The circumstances under which Christ pronounces the text of the prayer are also different. In the Gospel of Matthew, "Our Father" is part of the Sermon on the Mount. Evangelist Luke writes that the apostles turned to the Savior: “Lord! Teach us to pray, just as John taught his disciples” (Luke 11:1).

"Our Father" in the home prayer rule

The Lord's Prayer is part of the daily prayer rule and is read both during the Morning Prayers and the Prayers for the Future. The full text of the prayers is given in the Prayer Books, Canons and other collections of prayers.

For those who are especially busy and cannot devote much time to prayer, St. Seraphim of Sarov gave a special rule. "Our Father" is also included. In the morning, afternoon and evening, you need to read “Our Father” three times, “Virgin Mary” three times and “I believe” once. For those who, for various reasons, cannot fulfill even this small rule, St. Seraphim advised to read it in any position: both during classes, and walking, and even in bed, presenting the basis for that the words of Scripture: "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."

There is a custom to read the “Our Father” before meals, along with other prayers (for example, “The eyes of all trust in You, Lord, and You give them food in good time, You open Your generous hand and fulfill every animal goodwill”).

PRAYER

Prayer is a conversation between a person and God. Living conversation: like a son or daughter talking to their father. So is prayer. When a person prays, he says to God, says what is in his soul, what he can say to his Savior: his needs, problems, joys. Prayer expresses faith and personal feelings of gratitude and humility...

Man's prayer is a sacrament that the Lord left for communion with Him.

Prayers are different. There are public prayers that are offered up for the people: And I prayed to the Lord my God, and confessed and said: “I pray to you, Lord, the great and marvelous God, who keeps the covenant and mercy to those who love you and keep your commandments! We have sinned, we have acted wickedly, we have acted wickedly, we have been stubborn and have departed from Thy commandments and Thy statutes…” Dan. 9:4.5

There are family prayers where, in a narrow family circle, relatives can pray for themselves and their relatives and friends: And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord heard him, and Rebekah his wife conceived. Gen. 25:21.

And there are personal prayers, i.e. those in which a person opens his heart to God. But you, when you pray, go into your closet, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father, who sees in secret, will reward you openly. Matt. 6:6.

The Lord's Prayer is a universal prayer. Pay attention to every phrase of this prayer.

OUR FATHER

"Our Father ..." - this is how the prayer begins

"Father" - i.e. father, this word means a lot to a person. A father takes care of his children, parents are ready to lay down their lives for their children, because children are the most valuable thing they have.

"Our Father ..." - and in relation to each of us - MY Father! Those. if He is my father, then I am his son or daughter! And if I am not His son, do I have the right to call Him that? If someone else’s child comes up to an adult man and asks, for example, to buy a bicycle, the adult will say: “You have parents, they should resolve this issue.”

But the word “our” speaks of the community of all people and of the one God the Father, who loves everyone without exception. Even if the child says that he does not love his father, the father still continues to love him!

Which of you father, when his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or, when he asks for a fish, will he give him a snake instead of a fish? Or, if he asks for eggs, will he give him a scorpion?

So if you, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask Him. Onion. 11:11-13

The Lord - he is "existing" - i.e. eternally abiding. He is outside of time and space - he is! He is a Saint – and we need to remember this in order not to “be familiar” with Him, but to treat Him with reverence.

HOLY BE YOUR NAME

Holiness is the essence of God. Holiness is separation from everything sinful, from impure things, from unrighteousness…

There is nothing impure in God - in nothing, and even His name is holy!

People also value their name, and if a person’s reputation is “tarnished”, they do not trust him, they are wary of him. But if a person has lived a worthy life and he says a word - people will trust, believe him - his name is not tarnished.

The name of the Lord is purer and holier than all names in the world. He is the standard of purity and holiness, which is why we say “Hallowed be Thy name!”. By saying this, we glorify God, we confirm that "Holy is His name..." Onion. 1:49.

Ask yourself: Is the name of God holy in your heart?

KINGDOM OF GOD

Where is the Kingdom of God? It is located where there is the owner of this Kingdom - the Lord God. It is everywhere. It is in a distant and unattainable cosmos, it is in all visible and invisible nature, it is even within us: “ The kingdom of God is within you» Luke 17:21.

Outside this Kingdom there is no full life, because. life is given by God himself. People who enter this God's world receive peace and forgiveness of sins. And you can enter this Kingdom of God - while living on earth - calling on God in a prayer of repentance: “Thy Kingdom come » .

Outside the Kingdom of God is a dying world that is coming to an end, to eternal suffering. Therefore, we ask that the Kingdom of God come and that we be with God here, living on Earth.

Entering His Kingdom does not mean dying a physical death. Man can live and be in His Kingdom. And life has been given to us so that we can prepare and be with God in fellowship - this is what prayer is for. A person who prays - prays in simple words from the heart - has fellowship with God, and the Lord gives such a person peace and quiet.

GOD'S WILL

The pride of a person is one of the terrible vices that burns a person from the inside.

“Resigned to someone's will: no, it's not for me! I want to be free, I want to think for myself and do what I want, not like someone else. I don’t need to point out, I’m that small ... ”Familiar? Isn't that what we think?

What would you say if your three-year-old son told you this? We know that our children are not perfect, but when they communicate with us, we teach them, at some point we can punish them for disobedience, but at the same time we do not stop loving.

It is also difficult for an adult to come to terms with someone else's will, especially if he does not agree with it.

But tell God let your will be done very easy if we trust him. Because His will is good will. It is a will that wants not to make us slaves, not to deprive us of our freedom, but, on the contrary, to give us freedom. The will of God reveals to us the son of God - Jesus Christ: “The will of Him who sent Me is this, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him has eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” Jn. 6:40.

OUR DAILY BREAD

“Our daily bread” is what we need today. Food, clothes, water, a roof over your head - everything without which a person cannot live. The essentials. And pay attention - it is for today, and not until old age comfortably and calmly. It would seem that He, like the Father, already knows what we need - but the Lord, in addition to “bread”, also wants our fellowship.

He Himself is the spiritual Bread with which we can feed our souls: “Jesus said to them: I am the bread of life; He who comes to Me will never hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.” Jn. 6:35. And just as we cannot live long without bread for the flesh, so our soul will wither away without spiritual bread.

What do we eat spiritually? Is our spiritual food of high quality?

OUR DEBTS

« In everything you want people to do to you, do the same to them.» Matt. 7:12. In this prayer, we ask God to forgive "our debts." Have we borrowed anything from God? What do we owe him? Only a person who does not know God at all can reason like that. After all, everything that exists on earth (and beyond) belongs to God! Everything we take and use is not ours, it is His. And we owe Him much more than anyone owes us.

But here in prayer we see the relationship of people between themselves and God: and forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors". These words speak of a person who is nourished by God and lives in God, and cares not only for temporal, but also for eternal life - and it can be achieved if sins are forgiven, which the Lord in His Gospel calls debts.

TEMPTATION

“In temptation, no one says: God is tempting me; because God is not tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone, but everyone is tempted, carried away and deceived by his own lust; lust, having conceived, gives birth to sin, but sin committed gives birth to death ”James. 1:13-15.

In prayer, we must ask that the temptations (trials) that befall us are not beyond our strength. “No other temptation has come upon you than that of a man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond your strength, but when tempted will give you relief, so that you can endure” 1 Cor. 10:13. For temptations come from our longing desires.

Sometimes God allows testing for educational purposes, wanting to teach us something. And through these trials, our humility before Him is tested.

In prayer, we ask the Lord to deliver us "from the evil one", i.e. from the power of Satan, from his networks, from his own sinful desires, for the consequences of them are death. First, the spiritual, which separates a person from God, and then, perhaps, the physical.

In the Gospel, the prayer "Our Father" ends with a doxology: " For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen". Unfortunately, in our time, very often people pray formally, mechanically. But we should not just repeat the words of the prayer "Our Father", but ponder each time in their meaning. This, given by God Himself, is a perfect example of the correct prayer arrangement of the soul, this is the system of life priorities commanded by Christ, expressed in capacious words.

A case from one's life.

An unbelieving friend came to one hunter. He lives far away and occasionally comes to the taiga to hunt with a friend.

And once again, having come to visit - they are sitting at the table, drinking tea, talking about life, the owner of the house, like a Christian, tells a friend about God. And suddenly a friend began to ... hiccup.

The guest offers:

Let's do this: I'll put my hands behind my back and bend over 90 degrees, and you give me a glass of cold water to drink - I'll drink it and stop hiccuping. People say it's a good way to get rid of hiccups.

Friend, you better pray and ask God for forgiveness for sins and at the same time, to remove the hiccups, pray with faith - the Lord will help, - the hunter advises him.

No, give me water...

After the third glass, the hiccups did not go away.

And again the hunter advises: “Pray! Trust God."

And then the guest stood up, folded his arms over his chest and began:

Our Father who art in heaven! May your name be hallowed; let your kingdom come; may Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; our daily bread give us today...

Stop, - the owner of the house interrupted him, - What are you doing?

I pray, - the guest answered in fright. - What's wrong?

You ask God of bread! And you have to ask him from hiccups redeemed!!!

This is what happens when people pray a memorized prayer, sometimes without delving into the essence of the words of the prayer. They want one thing, and they can ask for something completely different...
