The University of Pretoria (Afrikaans: Universiteit van Pretoria, Northern Sotho: Yunibesithi ya Pretoria) is a multi-campus public research university in Pretoria, the administrative and de facto capital of South Africa.

Built as a designated complex to provide facilities for the Department of Music which was established in 1958, this structure consists of office wings, an auditorium and an open-air amphitheater. UP alumnus and architect Brian Sandrock was responsible for the design of the facility which was built on part of the old athletics field. Remnants of the spectator terraces around the track can still be seen to the east of the Musaion. The office wing of the complex was completed in 1960 and the auditorium and amphitheater the following year. The complex was officially opened with a series of concerts in 1961 and in April 1962 with a gala concert featuring South African opera star Mimi Coertse and the South African Broadcasting Corporation Symphony Concert. The complex features elements of the Little Brazilian or Modern Brazilian style and has excellent acoustics. In 1976 the University installed a mechanical-action pipe organ in the Musaion that consists of 2,659 organ pipes, of which the tallest measures 4.9 metres. The Musaion seats just over 500 people and the amphitheater around 3,000. Free weekly lunch-hour concerts are held in the Musaion during term. Together with the Aula, the Musaion and Amphitheater the complex is an important cultural venue on the University campus.

On January 19-22, the All-Russian Choir Competition "Choral Kazan 2018" was held for the fourth time! The choir show was attended by groups from all over the country - from St. Petersburg to Krasnoyarsk. In total - 21 teams and more than 700 participants.

The authoritative jury, which was headed by Professor of the Kazan Conservatory Vladislav Georgievich Lukyanov, also included Professor of the Kazan Conservatory Alfiya Ibragimovna Zapparova and Professor of the Moscow Gnessin Academy of Music Dmitry Alekseevich Onegin. The jury had a difficult job: to determine the best of the best in 15 competitive categories and four nominations. But thanks to the unique 50-point evaluation system developed by the Globus Cantata society, it was impossible to doubt the objectivity of the jury.

The leaders of the teams met at the "round table" with the jury of the competition. According to the participants, this meeting was one of the brightest and most memorable moments of the competition.

The participants of the competition were given a unique opportunity to perform both at the most famous concert venue in Kazan - the Salikh Saidashev Concert Hall, and at the most historically significant stage of the hall of the I.V. Aukhadeev, where S. Taneev, S.V. Rachmaninov, N. A. Rimsky-Korsakov, worked here as a clerk F.I. Chaliapin!

During their stay in Kazan, the teams touched the rich thousand-year history and culture of Kazan and Tatarstan - on excursions to the Kazan Kremlin, the Tatar settlement, the city-museum of Sviyazhsk.

At the final concert and the award ceremony for the winners of the "Choral Kazan - 2018" contest participants were addressed Sannikova Daria Alexandrovna - Director of the Committee for Tourism Development of Kazan and Abzalov Azat Iskandarovich- Head of the Department of Culture of the Executive Committee of Kazan. They thanked the leaders for the great creative work, congratulated the teams on their successful participation in the competition and invited them to visit Kazan again!

We congratulate the winners of the competition - the Choir "Tradition" of the Children's Music School of Mytishchi!

Goodbye, "Choral Kazan 2018" - hello, "Choral Kazan 2019"!

The competition was founded in memory of Professor of the Moscow Conservatory Boris Grigoryevich Tevlin (1931-2012), an outstanding contemporary musician, founder of his own school of modern choral conducting art, founder of the Chamber Choir of the Moscow Conservatory (1995) and the Department of Contemporary Choral Performing Arts (2011).

Welcoming the Competition, a classic of the Russian composer school, Honorary Chairman of the Competition Jury Rodion Konstantinovich Shchedrin noted that “many high achievements in the choral art of Russia in recent decades are directly related to the name of Boris Tevlin. Relying on the solid foundation of the great traditions of classical music, which has always dominated his work, he was invariably directed to the future, to the new, unknown, risky. He was an inquisitive, "obsessed" musician, undividedly devoted and passionate about his life's calling. Here is a great example for the youth! I express my hope that the Boris Tevlin Choir Competition will help nominate new names of choir conductors. Our culture is in dire need of gifted and qualified choir artists.”
