British band Clean Bandit - in an exclusive interview with OK! Clean Bandit: “We want to work with Zemfira and the UmaTurman group Clean bandit, what's the name of the girl.

The most sensational group of 2014 transforms both dance and classical music...

Classical symphonic and dance music don't mix well at first glance. Exquisite restraint concert hall and the noisy atmosphere of an ordinary, average, nightclub, this is heaven and earth. But this difference cannot be considered insurmountable. Mozart and Beethoven were very famous during their lifetime, just like David Guetta and Tiesto in 2014. Therefore, perhaps such different music if done right, it can also coexist. In the end, how else to explain the rapid path to the glory of the group Clean Bandit!

Clean bandit are a British electro band formed in 2009. This group released the track "Mozart's House" in 2013, which was ranked 17th in the UK Singles Chart. And in 2014 they released new single"Rather Be", which reached #1 on the same chart.

Breakthrough

Clean Bandit did not achieve success immediately. At the very beginning of their career, one record label asked if they were not a cheap pop group. But he who laughs last laughs, and in this case it was the Cambridge quartet, when their fourth single Rather Be is an elegant and cheerful combination of violin melodies, dance rhythms and the dizzying soul vocals of Jess Glynn - soared to the top positions of several European charts in early 2014. He also has an incredible number of views on YouTube - 184 million, and this number is growing.

Carier start

The three members of the band - Jack Patterson, Grace Chatto and Milan Neil Eimin-Smith met while studying at Jesus College, Cambridge University. They studied, among other subjects, the Russian language, architecture and economics. Grace and Milan played in a string quartet together, but Clean Bandit essentially began to take shape when Grace and Jack started dating, and Jack, an aspiring producer and club impresario, began remixing his girlfriend's classics, pairing them with energetic house beats. . When his brother, Luke, joined him and started playing drums, Clean Bandit was formed.

First hit

“When we started, we just wanted to make music that you could dance to and stand out from the crowd,” Grace tells Cambridge University's Varsity magazine. It's hard to imagine a better description of their first single, Mozart's House, which combines pieces from Wolfgang Amadeus' No. 21 String Quartet with house rhythms and infectious vocals from their friend Ssegawa-Ssekintu Kiwanuki. It was released by the British dance music studio Black Butter, which launched such bands as Rudimental and Gorgon City. The single became a minor sensation, thus proving that the idea of electronic chamber music is not so ridiculous.

Worldwide recognition

Clean Bandit was not satisfied with the success of his single released at the beginning of the year and worked hard throughout 2014. The long-awaited debut album New Eyes was released in May, and in August they released the single Come Over, which features reggae vocalist Stylo G on vocals. Real Love (a new composition later added to special issue album) and peaked at number two in the UK charts.

versatility

Relentless creative work groups Clean Bandit is a search in different directions. They take filming just as seriously as they take music. Jack studied at the All-Russian state university cinematography, and currently the band has its own production company, Clean Film, which created all the band's videos, as well as fulfilling other orders. Clean Bandit proved that they are worth something in the classical genre, performing together with Philharmonic Orchestra BBC on Zane Lowe's 45-minute special "Symphony in Three Movements" on the Radio 1 show.

Looking to the future

It is not easy to create the music of the future, because not everyone is able to understand such music. “At one party I met a guy who was very angry with us for using fragments from Shostakovich's String Quartet No. 8,” Jack tells the Guardian. - He convinced me that it was impossible. I think he thought it was humiliating for a work of art, but he really didn't know what he was talking about. He couldn’t even sing a simple melody!”

These guys have skill and head on their shoulders

Grace, it's no secret that you studied in Moscow. Were there good years?

(in Russian) Yes, I studied at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory and lived in a hostel. And it was very interesting (laughs and switches to English). Living in a hostel was both strange and wonderful. Music was played 24 hours a day. As a result, I lived in Moscow for 2.5 years, met a bunch of wonderful musicians and still remember that amazing time with warmth.

So every time you return to us as an international star, a wave of nostalgia hits you?

Certainly! By the way, now I realized that for a long time you have not been. Jack and I first came to Moscow about ten years ago. He studied at VGIK and worked at the Tretyakov Gallery: he organized exhibitions. We shot our first video, "Mozart's House", in Moscow in that insanely hot summer of 2010, when everyone left the city due to smog. Many still do not recognize Moscow in the frame, the city looked so strange at that time .

And we can say that it was this clip that started our career. At that time, we already had some recordings posted on the network, but no one listened to them. And the clip suddenly shot, and our songs began to play on BBC radio. So we have very important memories associated with this clip.

I know that you are generally serious about filming clips. In the new video "I Miss You" you did a real fire show. How did you agree to this?

Initially, we did not plan to shoot anything like that in the video. But already on the set, Julia Michaels (whose voice sounds in the song - the author) said that she could twist the hoop. And I've always been attracted to circus tricks, and I thought it would be so cool to film Julia spinning a hoop while standing on a piano in the middle of the desert.

And when the shooting ended, I decided that I myself would like to show some trick. And after a couple of weeks in England, we finished filming the scene where I spin fireworks. In my teenage years, I often went to psychedelic raves, where I learned this. And I thought that I can easily remember everything. It wasn't there! In the first take, I fired a fireball straight at my head and burned a bunch of hair. A terrible turmoil immediately began, but I was not going to stop, and we still filmed the scene. And, in my opinion, it came out quite convincingly.

What other secret talents do you have? Or will you not reveal all the cards yet?

Oh, you can't say that right now. Here is Jack and Luke riding a skateboard. I think they need to show it in the video somehow.

I wouldn't call myself a singer. I like to sing, but against the background of powerful voices that usually sound on Clean Bandit records, my voice will sound like a whisper. Although that "my" song "Come Over" is still one of my favorites.

Is it true?! I don’t know anything about Russian hip-hop yet, can you tell me more? I have always adored Zemfira, it would be great to record something with her. And when we lived in Russia, Jack and I liked the UmaTurman band, do they still perform? They were very funny guys!

We will give them everything. For now, let's talk about the tour. You take on tour that gorgeous mirrored cello from the I Miss You video?

I seem to be taking. There's just one problem: it's all covered in mirror mosaic, which makes it insanely heavy. I don't know if you can take it on board the plane, to be honest.

Speaking of touring. How do you manage your health in general?

I started practicing Ashtanga yoga a couple of months ago. I like that it can be done anywhere: at the hotel, and even at the airport. And no gym is needed, the main thing is to remember the order of asanas. And it's good for both body and mind.

During the Big Love Show concert at the Olimpiysky Sports Complex, which is held annually by Love Radio, OK! spoke with Grace and Neil, two lead singers of the British band Clean bandit.

Clean Bandit released its first single just a few years ago, but today it is the owner of the Grammy Award for the best dance track - Rather Be. They are not the first to use a mixture of classical and electronic music, but perhaps one of the few who did it so organically. The quartet from the UK Clean Bandit, oddly enough, has a close connection with Russia. The unspoken leader of the "pure bandits", pink-haired Grace Chatto, speaks excellent Russian - she lived in Russian capital while studying classical music at the conservatory. According to her, Moscow had a huge impact on the work of their team, in which a mix of completely different directions is heard.

First of all, I want to congratulate you on the Grammy statuette. I wonder if the awards inspire you?

Grace: It really came as a big surprise to us. It was so great to know that so many people loved our song. We ourselves made bets that the duo Disclosure would win.

Neil: Sure, awards are nice, but we don't make music for them. We just love what we do, and prizes give us inspiration to work on.

We know that Russia has inspired and continues to inspire you. Grace, why did you decide to study with us?

To begin with, I studied Russian at school, so I knew a little about Russian culture - it has always interested me very much. And I also had a wonderful cello teacher, it was he who advised me to go to study in Russia after graduation from school. I listened to his advice and gladly agreed.

How would you describe Moscow in three words?

G: Big, beautiful and crazy.

As for the madness - what impressed you the most in Moscow?

G: Subway! It's more than just transportation, it's art! All these mosaics, chandeliers… And it works much better than in England. And from Russian cuisine we were impressed by soups. Borscht is something!

Your first video clip, for the song Mozart's House, was filmed in Moscow. What did your friends say when they saw it?

CG: They liked it, but many did not even guess that it was Moscow. After all, most of the British think that there is always snow in Russia, and we shot this video in the hot summer of 2010, when there was smog in Moscow from forest fires.

You speak excellent Russian! What word in Russian did you find funny?

G: Oh, that's our name! When we heard the phrase “well, just a clean bandit”, we laughed a lot, because the word “clean” is used here as a synonym for the word “absolute”, and in English there is no such meaning, there is only “not dirty”. We found it very interesting. Pure truth. ( Laughs.)

How did you get the idea to relate this phrase to your music?

CG: Actually, this name doesn't refer to the music anymore, but to the people in the band.

That is, if I understand correctly, you are the same "absolute bandit"?

G.: ( laughing.) Exactly!

N: And I agree with that. Because she always knows what she wants.

Your team is distinguished not only by the musical component, but also by the video sequence. Who is the author of ideas for your video clips?

CG: The video is the merit of one of our team members, Jack, who, unfortunately, was unable to attend the interview. He studied at VGIK, so it is he who shoots and directs everything. Well, he also offers all sorts of crazy ideas ...

N .: ... and Grace implements them. She's kind of like a producer in that regard.

Can you argue with Jack?

G: It's impossible to argue with him! He simply does not accept the fact that there is something in this world that is impossible. ( Laughing.)

But your logo - a composition of a rhombus, a triangle, a square and a circle - is not at all gangster ... What does it mean?

N.: This is the design of four string instruments V electronic form. We started as string Quartet, With wooden tools, but we wanted to make unusual electronic versions of them. As a result, we got such a design in the form of a diamond-shaped cello and a square violin. We never made them in reality, but maybe in the future...

It would be interesting detail image! Do you think a carefully crafted image can help an artist become more popular?

G: Probably. But this is not our story. We generally do not think much about our clothes or hairstyles - if we are talking about appearance. For example, I recently changed my hair color from light blond to pink, but I did it just like that, for no reason. But, oddly enough, they began to recognize me less often on the street!

On February 14, you were members of the Big Love Show. Why did you agree to perform at this venue?

N .: We were very pleased to perform at the show, dedicated to the Day all lovers. And we are happy to congratulate all lovers without exception on the holiday.

Would you like to work with someone from Russian artists?

G: With Zemfira. We haven't talked about it yet, but I would love to record a song with her.

In the media, your style is often referred to as "baroque house". Do you agree with this definition?

G: Not really. The concept of “baroque” is attributed to us, probably, simply because of the presence of violin and cello sounds in our music. But in general, our record is a mixture of the most different styles.

N .: We are closer to the definition of "electronic chamber music". But I would call it all just pop music.

How do you like Dostoevsky from Disco? The Guardian called you that for the first time.

G: Oh yes, we like it very much! I love Dostoevsky's work, I read Crime and Punishment and The Idiot.

That is, if we write that you are "Dostoevsky from disco", you will not be offended?

N: No! On the contrary, we will gladly agree to another interview in the future!
