Finnish rock band poets of the fall. Biography

"Without silence, there can be no music." This is the motto of the beautiful band "POETS OF THE FALL". Who are these three Finnish guys? What is the secret of their phenomenal influence on the minds and hearts of people? How did an unknown small musical group in one year soar to the top of popularity in Europe and continue to remain on it, unlike other bands that formed in Finland - the cradle of European rock?

You can get answers to these questions only by listening to their music. But this excitement does not subside, but increases with renewed vigor, forcing you to rethink life values and understand your inner world, plunging into noir rock, guitar riffs, keyboard passages and incomparable vocals. Too many people in this world have been affected by the work of the Poets of Autumn...

It all started in 2002 in Helsinki, Finland, when rock singer Mark (Marko Saaresto) and jazz guitarist Olli (Olli Tukiainen), working in different musical directions, started writing songs together. “We have been working for a whole year. During this time, we realized that our styles fit perfectly and then began to write songs. Soon they were joined by trance-industrial producer and keyboardist Markus (Markus "Captain" Kaarlonen), better known as Captain. Thus, the Poets combine three different musical directions.

The name of the group is based on the idea that two opposites form one whole, that is, without one, there will be no other. "Poets (Poets)" form light, and "Fall (Autumn, or Fall)" - dark. The bottom line is how you understand Fall.

A real breakthrough was the composition Late Goodbye, included in the soundtrack for the computer game Max Payne 2: Fall of Max Payne, with which the group acquired world fame, so far in relatively narrow circles. Mark had this to say about it: “The Remedy guys had heard our music before and asked us to record a song for the game. Of course, we happily agreed. Sam Lake brought the lyrics he had written in the past and allowed any images and associations to be used to create the song. I sat all night on the floor of my kitchen with a guitar, coming up with words."

Remedy's decision paid off completely. In a matter of days after the release of the game, "POETS OF THE FALL", Late Goodbye, Max Payne and noir gained wild popularity. For a while, one did not go without the other. But every week the number of fans of "POETS OF THE FALL" grew.

In June 2004, the single Late Goodbye was released in Finnish stores, marking the beginning of a completely independent creative life Poets. In order not to run the risk of falling into premature oblivion, the single was nevertheless indicated: Theme from Max Payne 2. In addition to the original song, the single included a radio version of Late Goodbye with a cut intro, an acoustic version that conveys all the beauty of vocals and guitars, instrumental Late Goodbye, performed by Captain on the piano, and new song Everything Fades, showing that not only LG Poets are alive.

Three months later, more precisely on September 15, 2004, the second single, Lift, appeared. Moreover, an absolute hit! His appointment was the announcement of the upcoming album. The song was used in the 3DMark05 program (a series of graphics tests that calculate the performance of a computer's video system). Finland's main radio stations included Lift in their repertoire, and later the song took second place in the Best Track of the Year category, leaving behind hits like "Nemo" from NIGHTWISH. The single included two versions of Lift (the second one with an abbreviated solo) as well as a small and beautiful jam The Beautiful Ones.

And as an additional introductory dessert to the release of the album, the song Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day was released. It had the official status of Net Download and freely distributed over the network, starting from December 18th. This song has never been performed or released anywhere before.

In the first week, the album hit the Finnish TOP40, and in March it took the first position, ahead of such bands as APOCALYPTICA, NIGHTWISH, THE CRASH and others. Judging by the sound, the style of the Poets has not changed, which can only be rejoiced at, since the themes of their songs are far from being exhausted. The single includes two versions of CoR and an exclusive live performance of Don't Mess With Me.

Group history

Poets of the Fall was made available to a wider audience in 2003 when Remedy's screenwriter Sam Lake asked Marco Saaresto to write a song for Max Payne 2. Thus "Late Goodbye" was born. According to the soloist, Sam Lake sent him his recently written poem and told him to use the images inspired by it to write the lyrics of the song. His work inspired Mark a lot: "That night I sat on the floor in the kitchen, took my guitar, and wrote this song."

The song "Late Goodbye" generated a lot of interest in Poets of the Fall around the world. A few months later, "Late Goodbye" brought the poets first prize at the annual musical ceremony G.A.N.G. Awards" in San Jose, California. The ceremony was broadcast on the international channel MTV, as well as on G4TV in the United States.

The single "Late Goodbye" was released in Finland in June 2004. It contained various versions of the title track, as well as the bonus track "Everything Fades". The single entered the top ten of the Finnish charts and did not leave them for many months.

August 13, quite unexpectedly for everyone, the main music channels Finland at the same time start showing the clip "Lift".

It was a carefully planned surprise. Its effect met all expectations. The clip was really something to watch. A very well chosen song is only part of the impression. The clip was really cool and interesting filmed. The action of the clip takes place “behind bars”, where, according to the script, the guilty vocalist turned out to be. The clip was filmed by director Tuomas Harju (Stobe), who subsequently filmed all the band's current clips.

Poets of Tha Fall - Illusion and Dream

Thanks to the amazing Greenfest festival, because it was there that I first saw the live performance of the Finnish band Poets of the Fall. Always at some subconscious level you understand: yours or not. Like a book from the first page, a person from the first meeting, so music from the first notes gives a clear understanding of whether this is close to you. From the first appearance of Marco Saaresto (the band's frontman), I realized that this band was stuck specifically, and now my new item of money expenses.

This is an amazing acting talent, and indeed a great return of energy when you are among thousands of people, but there is a complete feeling that they are singing to you, moreover, they are flirting with you. Killer charisma, which rolls in a wave and carries away with it, an incredible combination of brutality and tenderness. Marco, it's all about you. I promise I'll say it all in person someday.

Finnish guys know how to intrigue, the next days after the concert in Google I was driven in queries related only to poets. It seems that all kinds of English-language interviews have been reviewed by me.

Dreams come true if you work hard and are not afraid to make bold decisions that completely change your life. So once happened to Marco and Ollie, the latter is the band's guitarist. The guys, sitting in Ollie's car on the beach, talking and dreaming about what kind of music they want to play and what they want from life in general, decided to create a new joint band, and even developed a step-by-step plan. Although everyone had behind him the experience of playing in various musical groups, (for example, Marco played in "Playground"), but all this was not the same and did not allow him to fully reveal his creative potential. And so a bold decision was made, because the creation of a new team at a rather "late" age by musical standards, Marco was 33 years old at that time, and Olli was 27 years old, it was clear to the guys now or never, and there would be no other chance. They were soon joined by industrial keyboardist Markus Kaarlonen, known to everyone as "Captain". So in 2003, a strong and permanent composition of the group was formed. And I must add that the poets fulfilled their plan rather quickly, despite the difficult path to success. I had to sell all the property and rehearse in a makeshift studio in the Captain's apartment, but it was all an investment in future success!

The group gained worldwide fame thanks to the song "Late Goodbye", which became the soundtrack for the game Max Pyane 2: The Fall of Max Payne. And now there are already 6 studio albums. The concert line-up of Poets of the Fall also includes Jani Snellman (bass guitar, double bass), Jari Salminen (drums) and Jask Mäkinen (guitar).

It is impossible to ignore the poetry of the group, it's really not just songs and not even songs, but very deep and complex lyrics. The author of all verses is the band's frontman Marco Saaresto. A person has a bottomless ocean of thoughts that add up to beautiful coded words that are really not so easy to understand. The English language is very variable, one word can have dozens of meanings, and Marco uses this to the fullest in his lyrics, drawing us a lot of options and images. The songs are sorted into quotes. For example, from one of my favorite songs "Where Do We Draw the Line":

"The dance of flames and shadows in the street

Make nobody poetry's ever heard

The weight of loneliness stands on your feet

The cage already there around the bird"

this is just great.....

The video clips of the guys are also worthy of attention. I think that, again, it was not without the influence of Marco, because before the poets he was also a designer and even led his small design studio. As he says about himself:
"I'm one of those people who scribbles on paper until it's completely covered while I'm giggling on the phone."

The group actively uses various symbols, such as a moth or a lollipop. Pictorial motifs can often be found in their work. In an interview, Marco explained the moth symbol as follows:

"For me, this is connected with a story that once came to mind about a boy collecting insects and all kinds of small bugs and spiders. And then there is a moth that lives only one day, and it flies to the light source, but on the very the last moment hesitates, freezes in place - and this is enough for the boy to catch him, put him on a needle and add him to his collection. The message is very simple: there is no need to hesitate - if there is a light in front of you, fly to it and do not stop. "

"Signs of Life" (2005)

On January 19, 2005, the debut album "Signs of Life" was released. In the first week since the start of sales, the album made it to the list of the top forty Finnish albums (Official Finnish TOP40 Album Chart). In mid-March, "Signs of Life" took first place, displacing such bands as Apocalyptica, Nightwish, The Crash and others. In addition, the Poets were awarded the title of "2005 Debutants of the Year" by Finnish commercial radio stations.

Carnival of Rust (2006)

2006 began with a successful event for the Poets. On January 19, the group won the Breakthrough of the Year at the NRJ Radio Awards. This award marked the successful and long-term performance of many of the band's songs on the waves of the NRJ radio station. And the next, even louder, success was not long in coming. On March 4, 2006, at the Emma gala awards ceremony, the group acted as the winner in two categories at once: "Best New Artist" and "Debut Album of the Year" for Signs of Life. The bands accepted the awards during a live TV broadcast and also performed the song Lift.

On March 22, 2006, the first single was released in Finland, named the same as the expected second album, and its title track - Carnival of Rust, and already on March 30, the group completed work on their third video for the same song. The video was directed by Tuomas Harju, who previously worked with the Finnish band Lovex and later with Nightwish. This work differed from the previous clips of the Poets, first of all, by the huge hidden meaning and ideas laid down by the director and the group itself. In the video, all the musicians played their roles (there was even a place for a sound engineer), and frontman Marco even two: a man in a Zoltar machine gun and Mister Greed in a tent for throwing balls. Even the appearance of a new drummer in the group was reflected. This was Jari Salminen's first official appearance with Poets of the Fall.

On April 12, 2006, the band's second album was released, called "Carnival of Rust", which immediately took off to the top of all Finnish music charts, and the composition "Carnival of Rust" itself became the most ordered on YleX radio for two months. Only 3 weeks after the release, namely on April 24, 2006, the album "Carnival of Rust" goes gold in Finland. In the meantime, the band's first studio album, Signs of Life, celebrated its one-year stint on the Finnish Official Albums Chart by April 4th, and on April 26th, it made a wonderful gift to itself by going platinum on home country. In July 2006, the rights to broadcast the songs "Carnival of Rust" and "Shallow" are bought by a Swedish radio station.

On August 16, 2006, the single "Sorry Go "Round" for a song from the Carnival of Rust album was released. It included 2 new versions of the title track.

On September 1, in support of the new album, Poets of the Fall will play a concert in Stockholm, at the Banditfest festival, and already on September 12, Carnival of Rust will be released in Sweden. The album was also released in Australia, Russia and Ukraine on September 6, 2006.

On November 2, 2006, a significant event in European music took place - the MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony in Copenhagen. The poets won in the nomination "Best Finnish performer", ahead of the very popular performers in Finland.

On November 29, Poets of the Fall release a new single called "Locking Up the Sun", which includes a dance remix of the title song, recorded and arranged by the band's keyboardist Captain, as well as the corresponding video, already the fourth on the Poets of the Fall account. The director was Tuomas Harju again, who continued the line of hidden moments and interesting metaphors in the band's videos. In the video, a special place was given to an orange pierced by nails, which appeared on the cover of the single, personifying the "locked" sun.

On December 10, 2006, Poets of the Fall performed for the first time in Moscow at the IKRA club, and the next day, December 11, the Carnival of Rust album goes platinum in Finland.

One of the largest Finnish newspapers Helsingin Sanomat selected the best Finnish albums of 2006. The results were released on December 17th, and Carnival of Rust made it to the top of the list.

On December 20, 2006, as a Christmas present, Poets of the Fall delight fans with an update to their website. The new design was in the style of the band's second record, with a big red and white barbed wire lollipop as the main leitmotif.

The end, like the beginning, of 2006 turned out to be fruitful for the Poets for awards. The video for the song Carnival of Rust won the competition of the Finnish TV channel Musiikki-TV, collecting 21.2% of all votes and thus becoming the "Best Video of Finland of All Time". In an interview, video director Tuomas Harju thanked all the fans for their support and called them "crazy". The same day marked Carnival of Rust as the most requested song on YleX radio in 2006, and the video for the same song won The Voice's Top 106 as the best video of the year. The video for Locking Up the Sun also made the top 106 entries, ranked 12th on the list.

On August 29, Poets of the Fall performed for the second time in Moscow, also at the IKRA club. On January 20, 2007, Poets of the Fall won the 2007 NRJ Radio Awards for the second year in a row, this time in the Finnish Band of the Year nomination.

Music and other Poets of the Fall merchandise is becoming even more accessible around the world. On March 7, 2007, the group's official online store opens. CDs, clothes and other accessories of the Poets can be ordered on this site, available in Finnish and English.

Revolution Roulette (2008)

On February 6, 2008, Poets of the Fall released a single titled "The Ultimate Fling" in support of their third album titled "Revolution Roulette". The single contains three types of the title song, including one acoustic, and a live performance of "Fire" as a bonus. The single took 2nd place in the Finnish charts.

On March 26, 2008, the third album "Revolution Roulette" was released and, like its predecessors, took the top of the Finnish charts. It goes gold 2 weeks after release. The album was very different from the previous two. "Revolution Roulette" became much heavier, elements of punk rock appeared and finally the vocalist Mark's voice became higher.

Their third tour started in Jyväskylä, Finland on April 18, 2008. The band also performed in Germany, India, Japan, Russia and Sweden. On April 22 and 23, 2008, the group performed in Russia: first at the A2 club in St. Petersburg, and then at the IKRA club, 3 times in the history of the club. It is worth noting that tickets for the Moscow concert were completely sold out.

On May 21, 2008, the Poets released the single "Diamonds for Tears", based on the song of the same name, from the album Revolution Roulette, which includes the video for the song "The Ultimate Fling".

On July 15, 2008, the band released a video for the song "Diamonds for Tears", which received mixed reviews from fans. It is noteworthy that the video was shot not by Stobe, but by someone Niina Miettinen.

The band featured on the Voice's CD compilation Livenä Vieraissa with a cover of Chris Cornell's "You Know My Name" and their song Diamonds for Tears. The songs were recorded live in the studio.

In early December, a mini-tour across Russia took place: on December 9 at the Tochka club in Moscow and on December 10 at the A2 club in St. Petersburg. Tickets, as in the case of the previous concert, were sold out.

Twilight Theater (2009-2010)

when rock singer Mark and jazz guitarist Ollie decided to record music together. “We have been working for a whole year. During this time, we realized that our styles fit perfectly and then began to write songs.” They were later joined by trance-industrial producer and musician Captain. Thus, POTF absorbed three different musical directions.

The demo tracks from their debut album, due out in the fall of 2004, showcase about one-fourth of their material. Therefore, the band had to make very difficult decisions regarding the selection of songs for the album. This choice speaks of high quality music.

The style of Poets of the Fall is reminiscent of American bands like Live and R.E.M. Mark says Live's music is close to his core. But he also points out that his lyrics are the sum total of many influences, and that only one-third of them belong to Poets of the Fall proper.

The name of the group "Poets of the Fall" - "Poets of Autumn", comes from the idea to combine two concepts that are inseparable from each other. "Poets" is the personification of the bright and positive side, and "Autumn" - the negative. Of course, combining these concepts, "Poets" can sound a little childish, but it depends on how you imagine "Autumn". It can be seen as a wonderful time of the year and then the "Poets" are its soulful creators ... However, many interpret the name of the group as "Poets of the Fall". In a certain way, this is also true, since the original meaning of the word “Fall” is a fall, a decline. IN English language"Autumn" is translated as "Autumn". And "Fall" in the meaning of "autumn" is an Americanism.

Poets of the Fall was brought to the public in 2003 when writer Sam Lake of Remedy asked Mark to write a song for Max Payne 2. Thus "Late Goodbye" was born. "The Remedy guys heard our music and asked us to write a song for the game. We naturally agreed. Sam Lake sent me his recently written poem and told me to use the images inspired by it to write the lyrics of the song. His work inspired me a lot . That night I sat on the kitchen floor with my guitar and wrote this song."

Since then, "Late Goodbye" has been distributed over almost two million copies of Max Payne 2 sold (Despite the success of the game and the highest ratings, it failed to sell, not even surpassing the original. It was planned to sell eight million copies.)

The song "Late Goodbye" created a lot of interest in Poets of the Fall around the world. A few months later, "Late Goodbye" won first prize for the poets at the annual G.A.N.G. awards in San Jose, California. The ceremony was broadcast on the international channel MTV, as well as on G4TV in the United States.

The success of "Late Goodbye" was huge. Radio stations in many countries have placed "Late Goodbye" in their playlists, and the mp3 file of the song has spread around the world wide web like a virus! The single "Late Goodbye" was released in Finland in June 2004. The single contained various versions of the title track, as well as the bonus track "Everything Fades". The single entered the top ten of the Finnish charts and did not leave them for many months.

Best of the day

The next single was called "Lift" and was released on September 15, 2004. Like “Late Goodbye”, the composition “Lift Me Higher” accompanied the credits, but this time not in the game, but in the 3DMark05 benchmark program (a series of graphics tests that calculate the performance of a computer’s video system), which was downloaded from the manufacturer’s website about eleven million once! The bonus track on the single "Lift" is the ballad "The Beautiful Ones", which continues the romantic line of POTF songs. The main radio stations in Finland included "Lift" in their repertoire, and later the song took second place in the category "Best track of the year", leaving behind such hits as "Nemo" from Nightwish. The release of the debut album promised to be the most intriguing release of the year.

On December 17, 2004, Poets of the Fall made a gift for their fans: they recorded the song "Maybe Tomorrow is a Better Day" especially for free download via the Internet. This song has never been performed or released anywhere before.

And on January 19, 2005, their debut album “Signs of Life” was released. In the first week since the start of sales, the album hit the list of the forty best albums in Finland (official Finnish TOP40 album chart). And in mid-March, “Signs of Life” took first place, displacing such bands as Apocalyptica, Nightwish, The Crash and others. On the disc you will find the already familiar tracks “Lift”, “Late Goodbye” and “Everything Fades”, as well as nine more new tracks. The single "Illusion & Dream" was released to support the album.

The tour of the group is scheduled until July of this year. By this time they will play about forty concerts. In addition to their native Finland, Poets of the Fall had a concert in Norway, and almost visited Moscow! On December 5, 2004 (on the eve of Finland's Independence Day), a party called "Independence Night" was held at the "B2" club. POTF were announced as participants, but they did not confirm their presence. I think that soon they will still get to us, as their popularity is growing rapidly.
