The twilight of the Ice Palace covers with a veil of mystery. And the very fabulous word "palace" speaks of an approaching miracle. The sounds of mystical music are heard from afar. Under the cover of fog, people bring props to the stage, adjust the spotlights. Everything around turns into silhouettes, wandering shadows. Bizarre figures appear through the night, created in the once hockey arena.
All this the day before show The Illusionists. Seven magicians from all over the world came to St. Petersburg to show their art. No, it's not art, it's magic.
Each illusionist has his own unique program, each is recognized as the best in his country. Some of them have the title of "Wizard of the Year", someone collects stadiums. But together they create a miracle.
The performance takes place in colorful costumes, extras dance, complex scenery replace each other.
Alchemist
The lights go out on the stage, but then, like stars, thousands of light bulbs flicker. Leaves Leonardo Bruno, nicknamed the Alchemist. This is a hereditary illusionist from Mexico, who received his first award at the age of seven.
Bruno is wearing a doctor's coat and goggles. From under the black cloth, he pulls out... a chainsaw! Many have heard about the trick with sawing a person, but, after sawing, Bruno "stitches" the assistant with a stapler.
Manipulator
Japanese Yoo Ho Jin hypnotizes the viewer. In the hands of the Manipulator is a deck of cards. In complete silence, without saying the cherished: “Three, seven, ace!”, He receives four cards out of two, eight out of four. Under each card are coins, moving either into the hand of the magician, or under another card.
At the end of the performance, Yoo Ho Jin turns some coins into a watch on a chain, proving that time is money.
Falsifier
When you see the numbers of James More, a chill runs down your back, and your palms sweat. If Bruno was sawing an assistant, then Mor simply separates his legs from himself, as if something was not needed, and then splices them together, as if putting on trousers.
The iron cage is taken out. The assistant sets fire to the spikes on it with a torch. The hall was lit up with a flickering light. James lays down inside the cage. The curtain falls, and the magician teleports in a second, and a fire burns in the place where he just stood. Maybe the magic is fiction, but the flame is real.
And the living illusionist is already waving his hand from the audience.

Grand Magician Luis de Matos shared his impressions of the city and talked about the show
I liked St. Petersburg, I was curious to learn about it. I'm here for the first time. Many of my friends said that this is a beautiful city. And when I arrived, I was convinced that it was true.
— What inspires you?
— I try to find my magic in real life, pop culture. No matter how I spend my time playing Angry Birds or doing magic on stage. It seems to me that in our show, the inspiration came to the producers: to collect seven performers, even the creators of magic. Therefore, the show is the best seven styles, seven illusionists, seven parts of the world. This is our uniqueness.
Will there be real magic in the show?
“I believe the magic happens in the imagination of the audience. We use tricks, secrets, mirrors, magnets. So, we create illusions, but it turns into magic. Spending time with us, the viewer's dreams change, the imagination and perception of the world change. This is magic, and then I believe in it.

The Illusionists has traveled to 25 countries and is already considered the best-selling show in Broadway history.
On the eve of the tour in Belarus, one of its participants, James More, came to our office to talk about the show and show a few tricks.
What genre does your show belong to: is it mental magic, technical tricks or sleight of hand and body? Or do you do everything at once?
In our show "Illusionists" 7 magicians participate, and each of them specializes in his field. So there are many different genres. My tricks are more than just manual and body sleight. This is the use of light, music, dance and other arts.
- Do mistakes happen during the performance?
Of course, we try to avoid them. But it happens that something goes wrong, and then we try to hide it so that the audience does not notice it. I must emphasize that the pledge good room- Preparation. We go on stage, fully confident that there can be no mistakes.
- Who is your authority in the world of illusionists?
David Copperfield! He is already 61 years old, of which he has been at the top of the industry for 30 years. As Ronaldo is the best in football, so Copperfield is the best in illusion. True, now he has succeeded in business and is busy with it, but he still has his own show in Las Vegas, which always sells out tickets.

- How much equipment do you bring with you for the show?
If earlier there was enough chest of drawers in my room, now the whole team maintains the equipment, because I can’t handle it alone. The show runs for two hours, it uses the most advanced achievements, and this is a lot of money - several million dollars. By the way, the same people who worked on the David Copperfield show created the equipment.
- Who helps you on stage? Maybe, according to tradition, there is a beautiful assistant?
Not only girls, but also guys participate in my show. All assistants must be involved in acrobatics, dance or gymnastics. And it's extremely important to find people I can trust, because some numbers are potentially dangerous.
- I wonder if the show changes depending on which country it is in?
Yes, of course, the show is changing a little. When we performed at United Arab Emirates, excluded the dance part, as it did not fit in the plan cultural traditions countries. In Muslim countries, you can not perform in too open clothes. Well, we also resort to the services of an interpreter if the audience does not speak English well. The show "The Illusionists" has existed for 6 years and has visited many countries of the world. We traveled all over America, were in almost all European countries, and in Sydney, Australia, we even performed at the famous opera house.
Some illusionists make a career out of exposing their colleagues' tricks. Have you ever done something like this?
No! I have never done this and I think it is wrong to reveal the secrets of others. After all, there are tricks that are 200 years old, and it would be wrong to reveal their secrets now. But competition between magicians, of course, exists. We are very ambitious people and sometimes it comes out.
- Is there a secret lodge of magicians, like the Masonic?
I am in a British club called the Magic Circle. We meet with other members, discuss our ideas and secrets. In order to join this club, you need to pass an exam and prove your abilities.
- Probably, it was worth asking about it right away, but nevertheless: how did your passion for magic begin?
I showed my first focus on school event just to fill the time. Used a shoe box for it. Then the teachers came running to me, who were interested to know how I did it. It was surprising: after all, usually children look for answers from adults, but here it turned out the other way around. This prompted me to develop further in this art. And I'm really addicted to it for life.
