VAZ 2109 "Sputnik", popularly referred to as the "nine" - is a five-door car, developed in the late 80s of the last century and mass-produced for more than 20 years. Its drawback: almost all the time the back of the car remains polluted with dust, sand and dirt. All sorts of debris found on the road surface can get both on the car itself and in some of its parts. Often, the trunk lock, the fifth door of the VAZ, suffers from this.

Everyone who encountered this non-critical, but rather unpleasant breakdown of the VAZ 2109 trunk lock, tried to somehow solve it. Today, there are several options for getting out of this unpleasant situation. The first, quite simple and logical, is to buy a new one and install it in place of the previous one in the same way that the mechanism was installed at the manufacturing plant.

But this option does not solve all problems, since the new lock will also become unusable over time and will require replacement. In addition, it is impossible to repair the lock itself, because it is a non-separable mechanism. In this case craftsmen adapted to install the electric lock of the Lada "Kalina" on the VAZ 2109. There are significant differences between all these methods, each has disadvantages and advantages.

Replacing the larva of the tailgate locking device

It is quite easy to buy a new lock for the trunk of a car and a larva in any auto supply store that sells locks for car doors. You do not need to immediately remove the key from the hole of the larva, since after that it is almost impossible to assemble the mechanism back. Removing the trim and accessing the trunk lock is easy by removing a few rivets. After this manipulation, it is necessary to unscrew the two nuts without touching the terminals located on their bolts. The next step is to actually replace the old mechanism and the larva itself with new parts. The larva and the lock should be screwed with factory bolts and this place should be covered with sheathing.

On for a long time you can forget about the poorly functioning lock of the "nine" by trying to change it to the automatic electric lock "Kalina". You need to pay attention to the fact that you should use a lock from Lada with a sedan-type body, not a hatchback - they differ in their design from each other. The next element of the new design, which will need to be installed instead of the old lock, is the counterpart, which can also be taken from the Lada Kalina lock. It is installed without problems on the trunk of a VAZ 2109 car and does not require significant changes.

Installing a lock from Kalina implies that its opening will be carried out using an electric drive or mechanically by a lever from inside the machine. Therefore, it is worth buying a special kit for central lock. Wiring will require the installation of a button, relay and fuse (8 or 16 A). In addition to these structural elements, you will need two more plastic or rubber plugs, as well as a bracket - a small corner with side dimensions of 30 mm and a thickness of 1-2 mm.

The tools with which the device will be replaced are:

  • angle grinder;
  • keys for 8 and 10;
  • drill.

The cost of a new device will definitely pay off in a year, so you should not worry about your investments. In addition, all the materials required for the new mechanism are quite cheap. Replacing a lock is a very important thing that you can do yourself or trust the repair specialists.

Removing the old trunk lock and installing a new lock

The simplest part of the replacement process is removing the failed mechanism.

The lock from the Lada "Kalina" is not completely similar to the device for closing the tailgate of the VAZ 2109, so it needs to be slightly modified. Repair does not require special skills, since you only need to saw the upper protruding part of the metal and shorten the lever a little. The counter part of the design from Kalina is made in the form of a U-shape, so it can be easily installed on the rest of the previous locking device and its larva, which was left without its working mechanism.

The electric drive can be installed in the place you need, not forgetting that the possibility of regulation and its rigid connection directly with the opening lever is a prerequisite. The wiring can be laid directly inside the tailgate, leading to the car interior. In the cabin, it can be put under the skin, and rear rack lay down. From below it can be hidden under soundproofing and rugs. The button should be placed in the VAZ 2109 cabin in a convenient place so that it does not interfere and it is easy to reach for it. You need to connect the button through the relay. It will supply “plus” to its winding, and it will already redirect it directly to the gear motor, which is connected to the closing device rod.

We must not forget that the terminals that are used when connecting the button to the new mechanism should be carefully insulated and crimped. Repairs must be carried out, being confident in their abilities and with an understanding of how not only the mechanical, but also the electrical part of the new lock works. Replacing a mechanical locking device with an electric one can take from an hour to three, depending on skills and experience.

The new electric lock will serve for a long time, since it is less subject to those mechanical influences that the factory VAZ 2109 mechanism.

The design of locks on VAZ 2109-2108 vehicles is such that it is impossible to repair them. That is, if a lock malfunctions, it will need to be replaced with a new one. To do it yourself, you will need the following tool:

  • Screwdrivers flat and Phillips (shock)
  • Head for 8
  • Extension
  • Crank or ratchet handle

The photo shows only an impact screwdriver and a wrench for it. So, the first thing you need. After that, remove the protective film that is inside and is attached with metal latches. Then we disconnect the control rods of the outer handle and the lock switch. The tie rods are usually attached with plastic hinges, so they can simply be pried off with a flathead screwdriver.

Now the most basic step is to unscrew the door lock. Do not use ordinary screwdrivers, as you can knock off the edges of the bolt and then have to drill them out. To do this, it is convenient to use an impact or turnkey power screwdriver. Everything is shown below:

If necessary, we buy new locks, the price of which is about 100 rubles, and we install it. To remove the internal lock, you need to unscrew the bolts securing the door opening handle, as shown in the photo below.

The problem with the VAZ-2109 is that over time the door loosens and the locks work. In most cases, adjustment and adjustment of the lock is necessary. The situation is more difficult when the lock just jams. This often happens on the driver's side. In this case, it is worth replacing the lock, but do not knock it out with the balloon key. As a temporary measure, a door lock cylinder can be replaced on a VAZ-2109 car.

Losing keys or jamming the lock is an unpleasant situation for any car enthusiast. Do not break the door or locking mechanism. Carefully open the door so as not to damage the rods and the body of the locking mechanism. After that, proceed to the rest of the work. Instructions for removing and replacing the euro handle larvae are as follows:

  1. Remove the trim from the door. This work will not take you much work, but try not to damage the material.
  2. Disconnection of rods is one of the most difficult parts work. Pick up the bottom with pliers and remove from the handle. Then it's easy to put it back in. In order to remove the top, rest against the handle with a screwdriver, thread the unnecessary wire through the rod and pull sharply. Without a screwdriver, the rod will bend.
  3. Unscrew the handle with an 8 key.
  4. Before further work, remember the position of the lock. Pull out the pin from the side and remove the rod.
  5. Remove the spring and pull out the larva.
  6. Grease the groove where the larva was located with WD-40.
  7. The new larva comes with the key. Do not pull it out until the lock is installed. A new part sometimes needs to be carefully finished with a file. This happens if it is made in China or simply of poor quality.
  8. If the pin does not fit into the hole freely, then you need to slightly file the place for it.

Assembly is in reverse order. Don't forget to connect the rods and test the lock before you lock the car for the first time. This job will take you no more than an hour. Sheathing is always placed last, after adjusting the locking mechanism.

The tuning work consists in changing the height of the rods. The rods are attached using plastic tips with a ball bearing inside. The correct adjustment of the door lock is carried out by pulling out the groove. Next, you will need to slightly twist counterclockwise or clockwise. The lock is adjusted by selecting the ideal length. So be patient.
