And now two words about who invented them. Invented? Breathe life into them! Mark Twain is the pseudonym of Samuel Langhorne Clemens. The pseudonym "Mark Twain" in translation means - "measure two." This pseudonym is related to those times when pilots on the Mississippi measured the depth of the river with a rope - the writer liked to recall the years he spent as a pilot. The sailor, standing on the bow of the ship, lowered the cargo into the river and "read the testimony." One fathom was designated - "measure one", two fathoms - "measure two" ("Mark twain").
The Adventures of Tom Sawyer book in many ways. young dreamer Tom is Mark Twain himself as a child. Under the name of Aunt Polly, the writer portrayed his mother, under the name of Becky Thatcher - a school friend, under the name of Huck Finn - his best friend Tom Blankiship.
Twain achieved his first success as a writer during one of his travels. In 1867, he begged Colonel McComb to sponsor his trip to Europe and Middle East. In June, as Alta California correspondent for the New York Tribune, Twain travels by boat to Europe. In August, he also visited Odessa, Yalta and Sevastopol (the "Odessa Bulletin" contains the "Address" of American tourists, written by M. Twain). The novice writer, as part of the ship's delegation, visited the residence of the Russian Emperor in Livadia. Letters written by him on a trip to Europe, he immediately sent to the newspaper for publication. And upon his return to America, these letters formed the basis of his book "Simples Abroad", which was published in 1869 and was a huge success.
Until the very end of his life, many knew Mark Twain precisely as the author of "Simples Abroad". For my writing career Twain traveled through Europe, Asia, Africa and even Australia. In the city of Hannibal (Missouri), the house in which Sam Clemens played as a boy, and the caves that he explored as a child, and which he later spoke about in the famous "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", have been preserved. Mark Twain's house in Hartford has been turned into his personal museum and declared a National Historic Site in the United States - tourists now come here.
Last year I ran the project Is Tom Sawyer Popular in the 21st Century? And here's what I found out after a little survey.
Most of the respondents had not read the books or seen the films about Tom Sawyer. Many people think that Tom Sawyer is quite famous, although they themselves do not know anything about him. Most people think that Tom is a small, quiet and calm boy. But in fact - Tom is a mischievous and naughty boy, about twelve years old. Many answered that they had not heard anything about Tom Sawyer, although in the first question they claimed that they knew who Tom Sawyer was. Most of the children surveyed do not read books at all.
Whether Tom is more popular in other countries than in Russia, I cannot say. I was able to contact only two peers who live in the UK and the US. He hasn't read The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and there are other books at school. Only a small part of the guys interviewed know the author of this wonderful book, and most do not know how many books have been written about Tom. After completing the project, I concluded that Tom Sawyer is not very popular in the 21st century.
In our country, director Stanislav Govorukhin in 1981 created the film "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn" (this director also made the films "The Life and Amazing Adventures of Robinson Crusoe", "The meeting place cannot be changed", "In Search of Captain Grant", " Ten blacks ”).
