The muffler resonator directly affects the power of the motor. The faster he manages to remove the burnt gas from the power unit, the faster the engine burns fuel, and, consequently, the more power. However, unfortunately, the muffler resonator on the VAZ 2114, like on any other car brands, is constantly exposed to high temperatures, as a result of which it wears out quickly.

The level of performance of the exhaust system as a whole, as well as its individual parts, is influenced by such unfavorable technological factors:

  1. Development of external and internal corrosion.
  2. Chips and scratches caused by small hard particles of the roadway.
  3. Frequent pollution.
  4. Frequent impacts, as well as mechanical damage to the muffler.
  5. Permanent vibration during operation of the power unit.
  6. Sharp frequent fluctuations in temperature regimes - from cooling to rapid heating.


All the factors considered to one degree or another affect the performance and safety of the exhaust unit. In case of violation of integrity, a gas flow immediately rushes into the formed fistula or fracture, which expands the emergency hole due to its pressure and speed.

And then the breakdown makes itself felt - the exhaust gases exit at the wrong point, the system starts to clap loudly and “growl”, the muffler knocks. It becomes virtually impossible to operate a car in such conditions.


Keep in mind that in addition to sharp and loud pops, defects in the 2114 exhaust system can also affect the performance of the power unit itself. Therefore, sometimes it is necessary to repair individual elements of the system, which will allow for some time to do without replacing the entire assembly as a whole.

The diagnosis of breakdowns, which precedes restoration operations, is facilitated by the fact that the appearance of defects is usually accompanied by an unpleasant strong roar and rattle under the car bottom. It remains for the car owner to carefully study the entire chain and diagnose the nature and location of the malfunction. Most often, problems occur in the following components:

The entire exhaust system is a complex of welded metal elements, the repair of which will necessarily require welding. The main trouble of the muffler is the formation of through holes in the pipes and body.

There is an option to temporarily repair the damage with a special heat-resistant bandage with an epoxy composition or "cold welding". However, the service life of such patching is short.


Repair work begins with the removal of the section of the exhaust system in which the "hole" occurred. Typical places are the resonator or silencer. Regardless of the cause of the formation of a fistula, they treat it with the same method - applying patches.

For repairs, sheet metal pieces should be prepared in advance. First of all, we determine the size of the damage. Places where there is already corrosion must be removed completely by cutting them out with an angle grinder.


It is useful to treat the internal surfaces with a special anti-corrosion compound. Then we cut out a piece of sheet metal that could cover the missing area, but with some margin - 1-1.5 centimeters. Next, you should clean the place of welding and weld the patch. For work, it is desirable to use a semi-automatic welding machine, which is used for body welding. It is important that the welding seam is even and continuous. In the same way, fractures and burnouts on the nozzles are eliminated.

Change gaskets. In different car models, the number of sealing parts at the sealing points varies to some extent. To replace the gasket in the muffler, it is necessary to dismantle the entire exhaust system or a small section of it. Despite the small number of fasteners, the dismantling of the muffler can take hours. Before starting work, treat the fasteners with a special fluid, such as WD-40.

The process of replacing gaskets is not very difficult. Remove the old sealing material and clean the joints. The adjacent planes of the two muffler elements must be in close contact with each other. If there are small pits on the metal flanges, use a heat-resistant sealant.


We repair muffler pipes. There are many pipes in the exhaust system of a car. They are straight and curved. As a rule, burnouts occur at bending points, which occurs for several reasons:

  1. Exhaust gases strongly affect the curved part.
  2. When bending, the wall of the pipe becomes thinner.

To repair a large hole or crack, use a welding machine. Sometimes it is possible to avoid dismantling the muffler if it is possible to get close to the place of welding from below the car. A steel patch is welded onto the problem area or a welding seam is applied.


Not infrequently, depressurization of the system occurs at the junction of the pipe with the tank or resonator. In this case, the damaged area will have to be dismantled from the car and try to restore it. To do this, you will need: a piece of sheet metal, a metal rod or a piece of wire, a semi-automatic welding machine.

First, we remove corrosion-damaged areas and loose rust from the elements. Further, with the help of welding, the pipe is stuck to its original place. Then you should fill the holes and slots with pieces of wire or install a sheet metal patch.

  1. First of all, you should spray WD-40 on the mounting nuts of the muffler connection clamp, as they, as a rule, rust and stick strongly, as a result of which it is rather problematic to unscrew such a thread.
  2. Next, using a 13 wrench, unscrew the clamp nuts. Use the ratchet handle and head to get things done quickly and conveniently.
  3. It is not necessary to unscrew the second nut to the end, since the clamp can be pushed back.
  4. We unbend the edges of the pipe with a flat screwdriver.
  5. Next, knock down the muffler with a hammer from the junction towards the exhaust pipe.
  6. At two points where the muffler is suspended, we take out the cotter pins with pliers.
  7. On last step dismantling, it is necessary to take the muffler out, for which we turn and unscrew the pipe in different directions.
  8. Now install the new muffler in reverse order.

When the outer wall of the resonator burns out, the part can be restored for a while. To do this, thin and rusty metal is cut out in the problem area. It is desirable to cut a simple rectangular shape to make it easier to prepare a patch of the same size. Now we apply a patch to the resonator and scald around the perimeter.

catalytic converter repair

If the catalytic converter leaks, it is necessary to replace this element. With the help of an assistant, it is not uncommon to carry out a replacement without dismantling the muffler, for which you should carefully cut out the catalyst with a grinder. Next, we apply a new element to the pipe and weld. It is important to choose the right changing part, and also not to make a mistake while working with a grinder.
