Review of the book by O. Henry - "The Last Leaf", written as part of the contest "My Favorite Book". Reviewer: Anastasia Khalyavina. .

"The Last Leaf" is amazing novella, written by the American prose writer O. Henry, whose real name is William Sydney Porter. This writer, as always, spoke about the complex simply and about the simple difficult, but in such a way that it is very small work made millions of people all over the planet shed tears over the book while reading! For me, The Last Leaf has become a kind of symbol of self-sacrifice and life. After all, it is last page kept main character from death, it was the last sheet that became Berman's self-sacrifice in the name of the life of a young neighbor artist, it was the last sheet that decided the fate of two people in the Greenwich Village quarter. It seemed to me that O. Henry in his work reflects on the destiny of artists, and people of art in general. After all, not a single person, be it a technician, historian, linguist or anyone else, would not be able, using an extraordinary imagination, to find such an extraordinary way out, namely, to replace the real last sheet with paper, skillfully drawn, such that even the eye ill artist Joanna could not distinguish it from the real one. The author of the book tells us that the purpose of the artist is to save other people through the beautiful. I think that the words of the author led me to such an idea, where he said that the last sheet was the very masterpiece of Berman, which he tried to create all his life!

This short story, read in ten to fifteen minutes, made an incredible irreversible strong impression on me, under the influence of which I wrote a verse that conveys the content of the novel. With your permission, I would like to insert it into my review. But I really wanted to make the following request, dear readers Bukli that if you are not familiar with this book, then before reading my verse, read it. I do not want to deprive you of the opportunity to get acquainted with this story for the first time in all those colors and emotions in which O. Henry himself wrote it!

One day in late autumn
When the trees are gray
Joanna's illness knocked her down
And nobody could cure her.

Autumn ivy grew outside the window
Jonesy decided that then,
When the last leaf falls
Her soul will go to that world.

"I'm alive as long as you're alive,
And please don't fall!
I'm tired, I can't
Soon, soon I will die!”

But the world is not without good people,
A friend decided soon
Until the hour of death has struck,
Hope to instill in all of us!

Artist - Berman wonderful brush
Managed to create a masterpiece.
The last leaf exactly the same,
Replaced flying away.

And the miracle happened!
Doubt away!
Joanna managed
Overcome the disease!

But on that cold, rainy night
When Berman decided to help Joanna,
The artist savior caught a cold and fell ill.
But nobody could cure him.

Berman is an artist in a hospital,
The next morning he died hastily ...,
Giving a piece of your life
To a beautiful young neighbor girl.

What is a true masterpiece

(Based on the short story "The Last Leaf" by O'Henry)

Hello guys!

The story we are talking about is wonderfully written. American writer O. Henry is called "The Last Leaf". William Sydney Porter (real name of the writer) was a member of the joker club, a modest bank accountant, prisoner No. 34627, a prison pharmacist, a writer, the author of 273 stories and one novel.

The name of the story is ambiguous: "The Last Leaf" - this can be said about the written manuscript, and about the last page of life. “The wind is careless in the eternal book of life. He could have moved the wrong page, ”Omar Khayyam once said. And these words are the words of a man who has not come to terms with the inevitability of death. Indeed, this is the essence of creativity - to deceive the inevitability, leaving oneself in eternity.
So what is this story about? ABOUT last days life? About creativity? Or about something else?

Read the story "The Last Leaf".

Checking knowledge of the text.

What is the last leaf - the end of creativity or the end of life?

You could say it's both. The last leaf is a masterpiece that Mr. Berman wrote. And this is the last page of his life. He saw the meaning in his existence in giving life to a person whom he considered it his duty to take care of. It is clear that he patronized two young artists who sincerely considered him a "nasty old man." His fruitless search for a "masterpiece" is due to its unfulfillment. When he saw the point of application of his forces - the "masterpiece" was written in a very short time.

Prove that Mr. Berman saved Jonesy.
- In the notebook on literature, draw up in the form of a diagram literary portrait Jonesy and Berman. Combine common qualities.
How similar are these two characters? How?
- Can you call Mr. Berman an artist?
- List the qualities of a true artist.

Conclusion.

Everything big starts small. The doctor who treated Jonesy, having heard that she wants to paint the Gulf of Naples, reacts violently: he asks if she has something in her soul that would really be worth thinking about? He perfectly understands that the desire to live is built from a bunch of little things, each of which is of great importance for a person. If a girl is interested in what style the sleeves will wear, she has an interest in life. If the sphere of her desires is something abstract, then things are bad. Any masterpiece, any work of art always remains relevant because it is tied to life, to empathy. Abstract truths are for philosophers. Low - for biologists and physiologists. Concrete, vital - for you and me. This story is about how art helps to live. And even a person who has turned over the last leaf in his life manages to create a true masterpiece - despite the fact that this masterpiece is a small ivy leaf on a crumbling brick wall. The history of mankind continues only because everyone leaves something behind in terms of material or spiritual. Look at any object of civilization - be it a car, a house, an object household appliances etc. Each of them is invested with the work and experience of many generations - those whom we do not know. Those who, after their physical death, remained in objects of material and spiritual world, creating around us the space in which only a person can live and create.

What is the purpose of the artist and art?

Save lives and give them meaning. O'Henry writes about this in his story.

The story "The Last Leaf" was first published in 1907 in the collection "Burning Lamp". Like most of the works of O. Henry, he belongs to the genre " short stories with an unexpected ending.

The title of the work is symbolic image of an elusive life. The last leaf on an ivy that clings to the brick wall of a neighboring house becomes a temporary reference point for Joanna (Jonsey), a patient with pneumonia, of her death. Tired of physical suffering, a girl comes up with a sign for herself that allows her to hope for peace ( “I'm tired of waiting. I'm tired of thinking. I want to be free from everything that holds me"), by which she, contrary to common sense, understands not recovery, but death.

Jonesy's psychological attitude is regarded by the attending physician as disastrous. The doctor explains to the friend of the dying girl Sue that she must cling to life (just like ivy to the wall of the house), otherwise her chances will not even be equal to one in ten. The doctor (as a representative of a realistic profession) offers love for a man as the meaning of life. Sue (as a person of art) is surprised by this choice. She understands more clearly Joanna's dream of painting the Bay of Naples (the patient talks about this until she gets worse, and returns to this as soon as she feels better).

The life-giving power of art becomes main idea story, both at the level of the private desires of sick Joanna, and the general plot sense: dreaming all his life about a real masterpiece, the old, long-drunk artist Berman creates an image of the highest value, an image that goes beyond art, since it becomes life itself. In his work, the old man puts not only his talent, but also his health: working under the northern gusty wind and rain, he falls ill with pneumonia and dies without even waiting for Joanna to fully recover.

An artificial (not real) sheet turns out to be drawn so skillfully that at first no one recognizes fakes in it. "Dark green at the stalk, but touched along the jagged edges with the yellowness of smoldering and decay" he deceives not only the sick Jonesy, but also the healthy Sue. A miracle created by human hands makes a girl believe in her vitality, ashamed of the cowardly desire for death. Seeing how bravely the last leaf on the ivy holds, Joanna realizes that she must be stronger than the small plant: now she already sees in him not approaching death, but unbending life.

Main characters novel - Sue, Jonesy and Berman - become the embodiment of the best human qualities: love, care, patience, the ability to sacrifice oneself for the sake of another. Resembling Moses, Michelangelo, a satyr and a dwarf at the same time, Berman perceives himself "watchdog" young artists and, without the slightest shadow of a doubt, gets involved in an adventure that cost him his life. It is noteworthy that the old artist knows Joanna for only a few months: the girls open their studio in May, in November Dozhanna falls ill with pneumonia.

Caring for the sick artist Sue - working for the sake of having something to feed her; cooking for her chicken broths; trying to maintain her fighting spirit - at first glance, is not one of the best friends Joanna. She meets the latter by chance and decides to work together on the basis of such common interests as views on art, chicory salad and fashionable sleeves. For most people, these three positions would hardly become fundamental when deciding to live and work together, but for people of art, they contain almost everything: a common artistic purpose(spiritual kinship), the same tastes in food (physical kinship), a similar look at fashion (a common understanding of the world).

The artistic space of the story - confusing and broken, repeating itself several times - closes the ongoing events within itself and mirrors them on the example of the fates of Joanna and Berman (the latter goes beyond the window, invades reality, changes it and dies instead of the girl looking out the window).
