How to make glow in photoshop. Soft glow effect on photo using Photoshop

Often in photographs where a bright beam of light is directed at a highly reflective object at a certain angle, you can see an asymmetric white outline - a glare. But is it possible to create a similar effect when the photo has already been taken? Yes, with the program Adobe Photoshop! A few fairly simple steps and you will get an image that looks something like this.

So let's get started.

First you need to cut out the object from the background. I use a combination of tools Magic wand And magnetic lasso.

After that, duplicate the layer with the image of the object and using the Blending Options create a standard layer around it. (color and intensity you can choose yourself) .

Next comes the stage at which we will make the glow asymmetric. Here it is important to follow the sequence of actions: first select the entire image (Ctrl+click on layer thumbnail) , then press "Rasterize Layer Style", and then delete all the contents of the area using the Delete key.
Move the layer with the remaining glow under the layer with the original image and transform it. Hold down Ctrl and drag the corner points to change the shape of the image. Use an eraser if necessary.

Now we can add a big star shaped highlight that usually appears in very bright photos. First, let's create a separate file with a size, for example, 100x100 pixels. On this file, be sure to use the tool Feather, create an outline that looks like a star with four rays. The star does not have to be symmetrical, if you wish, you can even change the shape of the highlight to any other. When the path is finished, select the tool and change the fill color to black (stroke can be turned off) .

Now you need to reselect the tool Feather and press Edit->Define Custom Shape...
Place the resulting shape on the main image, in the area where the highlight turned out to be the brightest, filling it with the same color as it and rasterizing it.

Remained last step. On the shape layer, select Filter->Blur->Shape Blur... In the menu that opens, as you understand, you need to select the shape we created earlier. You can set the radius value at your discretion, in my case they approached 65 pixels.

Ready! Now it remains to change the transparency of the layers with a highlight and edit the photo. The final image will look something like this.

Good luck creating your own work!

Adding a Multicolored Glow in Photoshop

In this tutorial, I will show you how to create an interesting glow and add mood to an image. For this we will use blend modes(blending options), selection tools and a bit of your imagination.

Before processing.

After.

Let's start. Open the image you want to apply the effect to. The author chose this.

Step 1. You need to separate the girl from the background. Do it with
using the method that works best for you. Author
used tool Feather
(Pen Tool), drawing a path around the girl's figure, you need to close the path,
create a dedicated area. Feather set to 1 px.

Step 2 Copy selection (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) it on a new layer, name the layer "Young woman».

Step 3 Duplicate the layer "Young woman". Apply an adjustment to a copy of this layer. Brightness/Contrast on the menu Image - Correction(Image > Adjustments > Brightness and Contrast).

Step 4 Select layer "Young woman". Let's go to the menu Filter - Blur - Motion Blur(Filter > Blur > Motion Blur). Set these settings Corner(Angle) - 40 degrees, Bias(Distance) - 120. Drain layers "Young woman" and its copy.

Step 5 with a girl and call him "Smoke". Using the tool Lasso(Lasso Tool), circle the area around the girl. Set the feather to 150 pixels.

Step 6 Make sure your color foreground is white and the background color is black. Now let's go to the menu Filter - Rendering - Clouds(Filter > Render > Clouds). Then set the blend mode for this layer. overlap(Overlay).

Step 7 Create a new layer below the layer "Smoke" and name it "Gradient". Select Tool Gradient(Gradient Tool) and click to bring up the Gradient Editor. Set the foreground color #c6229e and background color #1dbdda. In the tool settings, set Linear. Draw a gradient from the upper left corner to the lower right corner, set the opacity of this layer to 60%.

Step 8 Put a layer "Gradient" blend mode overlap(Overlay), then merge the layers " Smoke" And "Gradient".
You should have something like the screenshot below. Can
experiment with different color gradient combinations and others
blend modes for the Gradient layer.

Step 9 Create a new layer below the layer "Gradient" and name it "Glow". Using white soft Brush(Brush), paint over the edges of the girl with a brush. This will create a glowing effect behind the girl.

Step 10 Make the tool active Brush(Brush
tool), go to the brush settings palette (F5) and enter the following
settings as shown in the screenshots below. Save this brush
clicking Save a new brush (Create New Brush) and name her "splash".
Then you can select it again in the brush palette and use it later.
Swipe the adjusted brush on the image as in the picture below.
Achieve the desired effect.

Step 11 Create a new layer, name it "Stripes". The name speaks for itself. We are going to make glowing stripes. To make them, select a tool polygonal lasso
(Polygonal Lasso Tool) and create a triangle. Then using white
soft brush, paint on the opposite side of the base of the triangle. You
you can also experiment with various forms and sizes to
create the effects you want.

Step 12 Now we will make lighting on the girl herself. To do this, create a new layer, above the layer "Young woman" and set its blend mode to Base lightening
(Color Dodge). Load the outline of the girl you made earlier in
Palette paths or use the key combination Ctrl + click on
thumbnail of the layer with the girl. The selection will load. Using the tool Pipetka(Eyedropper
Tool), choose the color of the glow around the girl that we made
earlier and with the same color, with a soft brush, we draw along the inner
contour of the selected area.

Step 13 Now we will create light lines. Create a new layer called "Lines" above the layer with the girl. Supply color foreground(foreground color) white, select tool Brush(Brush Tool) and open the brush settings window. Choose a soft brush, about 9 pixels. In the tab Form dynamics(Shape Dynamics) install size fluctuation(size jitter control) on pen pressure(Pen pressure). This will give the brush strokes an interesting effect.

Step 14 Using the tool Feather(Pen tool), create some lines (see screenshot). After that, press RMB and select the option - Stroke the path(StrokePath). The settings window will open. It needs to put Brush(Brush) and check the box Simulate pressure(Simulate pressure). We press OK. After that, your lines made with a pen will be outlined with a brush.

Step 15 Now double click on the lines layer to bring up Layer styles(Blending Options). Applicable External glow(Outer Glow). Use the settings as in the screenshot below.

Step 16 With a layer mask, if desired, you can
remove some parts of the lines that fall on the girl. And
you can add more elements to the image to force it
look even more unique.

Here is the final image.

Studying this lesson, I made this picture.

You will need

  • To add a glow effect in Photoshop, first of all, it is necessary that the object whose outlines will glow be on a separate layer. How to separate an object from the background has been written many times in other articles, we will not dwell on this now in our instructions.

Instruction

So, we have a separate layer with an object. To make it more convenient to adjust the glow parameters, it is advisable to put another layer of a dark color under it, against which all the nuances will be.

Select the layer with the object. Go to menu Layer>Layer Style>Outer Glow (Glow outward), or click on the "effect fx" on the layers panel.

We see in front of a fairly extensive field for settings:

– glow color; it can be solid or change its color, depending on the distance to the object.

– halo width and glow intensity

– you can also vary the glow overlay algorithm – the Lighten and Screen modes are all suitable
Thus, we adjust the glow of the outline of the object to the outside. After that, go to the next tab Inner Glow (Glow inside). The settings here are similar.
To look natural, you need to remember that even if, according to the logic of things, the object glows only outwards, then any optical system, including the human eye, slightly blurs bright highlights due to the non-absolute transparency of the cornea and lens, they look beyond the source, therefore with an intense glow outside the Outer Glow contour, inside it all you need to play along with a light glow of Inner Glow.

In our composition, there can be any number of layers with objects, each of which can have individual parameters - the color of the glow and its character.
In addition, if we want to depict a single point light source, we can use the Lens Flare filter (in the Filer>Render>Lens Flare menu), which simulates the reaction of various photographic lenses to the appearance of a bright light source in the frame. Thus, we can add any number of luminous, lamps and spotlights to the composition.

By varying and combining glow effects, applying them to different layers, we can achieve very bright and memorable - fantastic and realistic results.

Create a new document 500x500 pixels, and then select the gradient fill from the toolbar. Set a radial gradient and choose a suitable transition (for example, a transition from black to red). Stretch the gradient on the created image, and then duplicate the layer (Duplicate layer) and change the blending mode to Color Dodge.

Now create a new layer and in the filter section (Filter) select the Render> Clouds option with the original palette options - black and white. Set the layer opacity to 30%, then open the Sketch filters section and select the Chrome filter. Set the filter values to 4 and 7, and then set the transparency back to 100%. Set the layer blending mode to Hard Mix.

Use the Pen Tool to create glowing lines. Draw an arbitrary smooth line with this tool, bending it along own will and editing the bend with anchor points. Create a new layer and select a 3 px brush desired color, switch back to the Pen Tool.

Right click on the created curved line and choose Stroke Path>Brush option with Simulate Pressure option. Click OK, then delete the path (Delete Path). Change the layer's blending mode to Multiply and set the Drop Shadow option in the layer style settings.

Also check the box for Inner Glow and Outer Glow. Adjust the parameters of the external and internal glow at your own discretion, observing the changes in the image and achieving the best effect. Blending mode of external and internal glow set to Screen, and then repeat everything from creating curved lines to adding lighting effects any number of times - until the number of glowing lines reaches the expected number. On top of the finished light lines, you can either insert a logo.

Light is a huge integral part of the film's success. This is true for photography as well. To create drama in an image, you need light, or the lack of it. Edge glow, as the term suggests, is also called backlighting. In this article, I will show you how to create this dramatic style of lighting.

Edge Glow effect created in the scene and Inner Glow effect added inphotoshop.

glow edges adds drama

There was a scene in Alien (1979) where the character, played by Harry Dean Stanton, goes looking for Jones the cat. This scene made me cover my mouth with both hands. I just knew that something terrible was going to happen - with such incredible tension, she was created.

« Stranger» film companies20th Century Fox

Lighting throughout the film was done in a low key to create a moody, atmospheric feel.

A good example of edge glow is using lights on both sides or one behind the subject, as in the image below.

In this photo, a light source behind the subject creates a glow around the edges of the head. This is also called hair glow.

Before I show you how to create this effect in Photoshop, I want to show you how easy it is to create in a scene. And then you can try to do it yourself in the comfort of your own home.

Create an edge glow effect in a scene

I used the following items to create the edge glow:

  • One bottle of water
  • One glossy black tile
  • Two light sources
  • Camera mounted on a tripod.

I bought a black glossy tile from a local tile shop where you could only buy one. As for lighting, stripboxes are ideal for this purpose. You place them on both sides slightly behind the subject (closer to the background).

Unlike softboxes, stripboxes are narrow and rectangular in shape. But for the purposes of this article, you can use any light sources you have at your disposal.

I placed my iPad vertically on one side of the bottle and opened the Soft Box app, which is free to download, and set the color to white. On the other hand, an LED lamp was installed. The stage was set up on my kitchen table.

As you can see in the photo below, I could control the angle of the direction of the light hitting the bottle. Camera settings were as follows: ISO 2000, shutter speed 1/60, aperture f/5.6.

A simple scheme you can use at home to create a glowing edge effect using black glossy tiles, props and two lights.

Note:

If you don't want to use two lights and have a regular softbox, then try placing it right behind the subject, and cover the center of the softbox with a black panel (this will be your background). You will need to experiment to get the desired object glow effect.

This is a photo of a bottle of water straight from the camera.

Now let's dive into Photoshop.

Creating a backlight effect inphotoshop

The key to adding an edge glow effect in Photoshop is the Layer Style and the object separated from the background. Before applying any layer style, it is necessary that the image you will use be carefully cut out. Use any selection tool, but I recommend the Pen tool.

Layer Style

Let's take a look at the Layer Style. With Photoshop open, go to the Layers panel. At the very bottom you will see a group of icons. Among them, the second from the left is fx. Click on it and a dialog box will appear with various options styles.

Layer styles will appear when you click on the iconfxlocated at the bottom of the Layers panel.

Kit internal glow

In another way, you can go to Layer Style by clicking on the button with horizontal lines in the upper right corner of the Layers panel. Scroll down to Blending Options. The same dialog box will appear and now just click on Inner Glow.

When you click on any of the layer style options, there will already be preset settings, but you can easily edit them. IN this example, let's leave some settings as they are, and adjust the following three:

  1. shading
  2. Size
  3. Opacity

Experiment until you are happy with the result, and then click OK.

Using the Color Dodge blend mode instead of Screen

I prefer to change the blend mode from Screen to Color Dodge while using the Layer Style technique. I used this on the water bottle in the title shot. To see the difference between the two blend modes, look at the two photos below.

The first image is Inner Glow with the Screen blend mode and default settings. In the second image, the blending mode is set to Color Dodge.

Changing the blend mode to Color Dodge

Edge glow effect created inphotoshop using the internal glow from set Style layer.

This edge glow effect was created using the Inner Glow from the Layer Style set, but with the Blending Mode changed to Color Dodge.

Creating an edge glow effect from scratch withphotoshop

However, this technique is really great if you want to create edge glow from scratch. For take an example This is an image of a Caligo butterfly. It doesn't have a glow effect at all.

caligo

I separated the butterfly from the background with the Pen Tool, and placed it on another background, to which I added a Gaussian blur.

Wheat

Since Kaligo is placed on a separate layer, I added an Inner Glow from the Layer Style and changed the blending mode to Color Dodge, choosing a dark yellow. I wanted the wings to be illuminated by the setting sun in the background.

Butterfly Caligo was cut with the Pen Tool inphotoshop and placed on a different background. I blurred the background with Gaussian Blur.

I put this Layer Style effect on a separate layer. Then I applied a layer mask and painted over the yellow glow on the wings to make them look realistic. I did some more retouching by adding a Gradient Overlay and then applied Filter>Blur>Medium to blend the colors of the two images.

By placing the Layer Style effect on a separate layer, I was able to apply a layer mask and paint over the glow effect on the butterfly's wings.

The inner glow was added using the Color Dodge blend mode. Then a gradient overlay is added to darken the bottom of the butterfly. Then a Medium Blur is applied to blend the colors of the two images.

Occasionally, to create a fantastic atmosphere or a magical mood in the picture, designers use the results of the glow. Master it artistic technique even for a novice explorer Adobe software Photoshop.

You will need

  • To add a glow result in Photoshop, before each one, you need the object whose silhouettes will glow to be on a separate layer. How to separate an object from the background has been written many times in other articles, we will not dwell on this now in our instructions.

Instruction

1. It turns out that we have a separate layer with an object. In order to make it more comfortable to adjust the glow parameters, it is appropriate to put another layer of dark color under the object, against which all the nuances will be visible. Select the layer with the object. Go to the menu Layer> Layer Style> Outer Glow (Glow outside), or click on the “result fx” icon at the bottom of the layers panel. We see a rather extensive field for settings in front of us: - glow color; it can be monochromatic or change its color, depending on the distance to the object. - the width of the halo and the intensity of the glow - it is also possible to vary the glow overlay algorithm - the Lighten and Screen modes are better than each. After that, go to the next tab Inner Glow (Glow inward). The settings are similar. In order for the picture to look unconditional, it must be remembered that even if, according to the logic of the prophetic, the object glows only outward, then any optical system, including the human eye, due to the non-absolute transparency of the cornea and lens, slightly blurs the brilliant highlights, they look beyond the boundaries of the light source , consequently, with a saturated glow outside the silhouette of Outer Glow, inside it is still necessary to play along with a slight glow of Inner Glow.

2. In our composition, there can be any number of layers with objects, all of which can be selected with individual parameters - the color of the glow and its character. Lens Flare, one that mimics the response of different photographic lenses to the origin of a brilliant light source in the frame. Thus, we can add to the composition what desired number of luminous lamps, lamps and spotlights.

3. By varying and combining the glow results, applying them to different layers, we can achieve hefty brilliant and memorable - fantastic and realistic results.

Photoshop opens up a lot of opportunities for designers and graphic artists to create a variety of spectacular images. If you have the technique of working in Photoshop, it will not be difficult for you to create a cute and strange result glow, one that will draw people's attention to any advertisement or logo. glowing lines on graphic image look clear and strange, create a certain atmosphere and testify to the skill of their creator.

Instruction

1. Make the newest document 500x500 pixels, and after that select the gradient fill from the toolbar. Set the value of the radial gradient and choose an appropriate color transition (say, a transition from black to scarlet). Stretch the gradient on the made image, and after that duplicate the layer (Duplicate layer) and change the blending mode to Color Dodge.

2. Now make a new layer and in the filter section (Filter) select the Render> Clouds option with the initial palette settings - black and white colors. Set the layer opacity to 30%, then open the Sketch filters section and select the Chrome filter. Set the filter values to 4 and 7, and then return the transparency to 100%. Set the layer blending mode to Hard Mix.

3. Use the Pen Tool to create glowing lines. Draw an arbitrary smooth line with the help of this tool, bending it at will and editing the bend with the support of anchor points. Make a new layer and, choosing a 3 px brush with the desired color, go back to the Pen Tool.

4. Right-click on the curved line you just made and select Stroke Path>Brush with the Simulate Pressure option. Click OK, then delete the path (Delete Path). Change the layer's blending mode to Multiply and set the Drop Shadow option in the layer's genre settings.

5. Also check the box for Inner Glow and Outer Glow. Adjust the parameters of the external and internal glow at your own discretion, tracking changes in the image and achieving best result. Blending mode of external and internal glow set to Screen, and then repeat all the described steps from creating curved lines to adding light results any number of times - until the number of glowing lines reaches the expected one. On top of the finished light lines, you can print any text or insert a logo.
