Photo and description

The Yakub Kolas National Academic Drama Theater was opened in 1926 on the basis of a studio that existed in 1921-26 at the Gorky Moscow Art Theater. It was originally called the Belarusian Second State Theatre. On November 21, 1926, the premiere of the first performance of the new theater based on the play by I. Bain “In old days».

During the years of the Great Patriotic War the theater was evacuated and worked first in Uralsk, and then in Orekhovo-Zuevo. In 1944, upon returning to his native Vitebsk, for achievements in development national culture The theater was named after Yakub Kolas. In 1946, for the play "Nesterka" by V. Volsky, the theater was awarded the Stalin Prize.

In 1958 on Theater Square(now - the area of the 1000th anniversary of Vitebsk) the building of the theater was built. It was built according to the project of architects A. Maksimov and I. Ryskina. The building was built in the form of an eight-column Doric portico with a triangular pediment. three-tiered auditorium with a parterre and two balconies accommodates 758 spectators.

In 1977, the theater was awarded the title of academic, in 2001 - national. In 1985, an art studio of puppets appeared in the theater, which in 1990 gave rise to the Belarusian puppet theater "Lyalka".

Vitebsk Drama Theater named after Yakub Kolas- the best of the theaters in Belarus, which can boast not only an excellent repertoire and magnificent cast, but also with an interesting architectural layout and advantageous location. Contemporary theater named after Yakub Kolas, a monument of the post-war period, was built in 1958 by architects Maksimov and Ryskina. The main façade of the building, overlooking the , is designed as an eight-column Doric portico, ending in a triangular pediment with a decorative relief. The architects decorated the side facades with rustication, pilasters, and stucco inserts. The end facade of the theater is made in the form of a four-columned Doric portico. In the very center of the building there is a three-tiered auditorium with a parterre and two balconies, service rooms are located on the sides.

It is curious that the first project of the theater provided for a basement floor for office space and dressing rooms. However, given the location of the theater (and it stands on the shore), they decided not to build the basement floor, since it would certainly have been washed away by river flows.

According to the old-timers of the theater, the building of the servants of Melpomene, before its reconstruction in 1985, was kept practically on the word of honor, since the city authorities saved on building materials.

One of the initiates of this medieval order, whose adherents burned at the stake of the Inquisition, but managed to leave their teachings to posterity, was Sergei Eisenstein himself, the director of The Battleship Potemkin. According to legend, it was in our theater that he was initiated into the order. In the 1990s, most of the Templars perished in the basements of the NKVD, and the newspapers ran a campaign against the "cornflower blue mysticism" (as the order was dubbed by Soviet ideologists).

theater building

The modern building of the theater was built in 1958 according to the project of architects A. Maksimov, I. Ryskina. The main façade of the building facing Millennium Square in Vitebsk solved in the form of an 8-column Doric portico, completed with a triangular pediment with a decorative relief. The side facades are decorated with pilasters, stucco inserts and rustication. End facade in the form of a 4-column portico.
On the main axis of the building there is a vestibule, a foyer, an auditorium with a parterre and two balconies.

Its construction, begun in 1956, coincided with changes in Soviet architecture. The project has been revised. This mainly affected the design of volumetric solutions and interiors. As a result of “clearing away excesses”, the building, which occupies a responsible place in the ensemble of the city center, turned out to be inexpressive. This is especially true of the side facade from the side of the embankment on the high bank of the Dvina.
