Monument to the keyboard dimensions description of the appearance. Why a monument to the keyboard was erected in Yekaterinburg

Imagine, a keyboard lies on the waterfront and no one steals it away, pulls out the Caps Lock key, or pours hot coffee on it. And all because it is concrete!

This miracle of design ideas is located in Yekaterinburg, where, I must say, the sculptors have a rich imagination. Ironically, the river, on the banks of which this marvelous monument was erected in 2005, is called the Iset. Now the local youth does not write it except for the I-network.

The dimensions of the keyboard are impressive - 16 meters long and 4 wide. One space bar weighs half a ton. The weight of the remaining buttons is more modest - 80-100 kilograms. This keyboard has all the right buttons, 86 in number. We set them at intervals so that each key can be used as a bench. Sitting on concrete may not be very pleasant, but this does not stop students and computer enthusiasts, they regularly come here to drink beer.

When the monument was still being erected and was not ready, Niklaus Wirth, the creator of the Pascal language, was brought to Yekaterinburg by fair winds. He was very inspired by the idea and came to look at the landmark, albeit not quite completed.

And you, if you are in those parts, do not miss the unique opportunity to reload the world - press Ctrl + Alt + Del. To do this, however, you will need a company, but you can find it on the spot.

The giant keyboard was created in 2005 in Yekaterinburg as a sample of a special project for the city festival "Long Stories of Yekaterinburg". The curators of the project were Arseniy Sergeev and Nailya Allahverdieva, who presented this conceptual solution to the jury and the public. Anatoly Vyatkin became the author of the project and the performer. Atomstroykompleks was involved as a contractor.

What is curious, despite the high popularity of the original idea and the execution of the project among local residents and guests of Yekaterinburg, it never acquired the status of an official monument or landmark. In fact, the composition, which was not actually recognized by municipal authorities, was nevertheless included in the register of the most popular and recommended places in the city by many guidebooks.

It was from the keyboard in early 2011 that the drawing of the "Red Line" on the asphalt began, which passed through 32 main sights of the central part of Yekaterinburg. The monument is an exact concrete copy of a computer keyboard on a scale of 1:30. The composition consists of 104 closely spaced concrete keys laid out in a QWERTY layout. Individual keys weigh up to 500 kg. They are mounted in recesses with an interval of up to 15 cm. The total area of the project reaches 64 m2. The base of the concrete keys repeats the symbols and letters from the alphabet, and the arrangement is the same as on a standard keyboard.

“Monument to the Keyboard” is installed on the second tier of the Iset River embankment, from the side of Gogol Street. The monument consists of 86 keys, each weighing about 80 kg (the "space" key, weighs half a ton).
Almost all the work that was done by hand, the sculptor had to do in the pouring rain, which, however, did not bother him too much. The keyboard symbolizes the unification of communications between Europe and Asia. The material chosen to implement the idea is "vandal-resistant" concrete. It was necessary to install the sculpture with the help of special equipment. Now residents of the city and tourists do not sit on the lawns, as they used to, but comfortably sit on concrete keys.

The key surface is flat with alphabetic and function symbols placed in the same order as on standard keyboards.
The concrete "Keyboard" can be considered both as a fetish of the computer age and as an industrial "rock garden", a large-scale, environmental experiment that forms a new communication environment on the territory of the Yekaterinburg city embankment. Each button of the concrete keyboard is at the same time an impromptu bench. The monument has become a cultural landmark of the modern image of the city and a new "brand".

A positive resonance regarding the project is observed among all segments of the city's population. Monitoring the reaction of passers-by on the embankment showed that in 80% of cases the reaction of passers-by is enthusiastic, in other cases it is interested. Residents of the city are proud of the implementation of such a project on the territory of the city, in which they are primarily attracted by the non-standard embodiment and the modernity of the image.
Until June 2011, several keys were stolen from the monument (keys F1, F2, F3, Y), and the Windows key was marked with Apple logo.

Professor Niklaus Wirth, the inventor of the Pascal language, who visited Yekaterinburg, expressed a desire to visit the project even at the installation stage.
The monument influenced the symbolic reinterpretation of the entire surrounding space and a sharp increase in its creativity. The ancient stone house located nearby is now called the "system block". The city's main river Iset is now spelled "I-network" on Internet forums, and next to the "Keyboard" it is proposed to place a monument to the modem. Residents of Yekaterinburg fantasize about the possible placement of a monument to the Monitor and the computer mouse.

The project was submitted to the competition for the status of one of the seven wonders of Russia.
In 2011, according to the results of Internet voting, the monument entered the “top 10” of the most popular attractions in Yekaterinburg.

There is a legend that if you press Ctrl + Alt + Del, the whole world will reboot.

In the central part of Yekaterinburg, on the second tier of the Iset river embankment, there is interesting monument, the existence of which most of the inhabitants of our country do not even suspect - this is the “Keyboard Monument”!

Description of the appearance and dimensions of the “Keyboard Monument”

The monument is a concrete monument, in the form exact copy 30:1 scale personal computer keyboards. This is the largest "clave" not only in Russia, but also in the world! It consists of 104 keys cast from "anti-vandal" material - concrete. Each of them weighs from 100 kilograms, and the weight of the gap reaches 500 kilograms. The layout of the keys corresponds to the QWERTY layout. The surface of the concrete keys is flat, but it has embossed letters and function symbols, which are placed in the same order as on a conventional personal computer keyboard.

The total area of this unique monument- 16 × 4 meters. The size of each key is 36×36 centimeters.

History of creation

The author of the Keyboard Monument project in Yekaterinburg is Anatoly Vyatkin. The Ural artist created a monument for the festival of the Ural urban action "Long Stories of Yekaterinburg". Technical support in the production of the keyboard was provided by Atomstroykompleks. The cultural agency "Artpolitika" acted as the curator of the project.

The opening of the “Keyboard Monument” took place on October 5, 2005. The author created the keys manually, and the installation was carried out using special equipment. It took more than a month for manual labor, and installation took about a week. One of the first visitors to the monument was the author of the Pascal language, the Swiss scientist Niklaus Wirth. He specially came to look at the Claudia in September 2005, when the installation work was still going on.

Art historians attribute the monument to the Land Art style. This trend in art arose in the 60s of the twentieth century. This style implies that the work must be closely related to the natural landscape. The keyboard not only perfectly fit into the image of the embankment, but also influenced the objects surrounding it. So the house of the merchant Chuvildin, standing on a slope, began to be called the "system block", and the Iset River on the forums is referred to as the "I-network". Residents of Yekaterinburg fantasize about creating a monument to a modem, monitor and computer mouse next to the keyboard. The object itself is used as a place to relax - you can sit on the keyboard like on a bench. And children love to play here, jumping over the keys.

Monument protection

Despite the high popularity among locals and tourists, the project has not received the official status of a monument. But nevertheless, in many Yekaterinburg guidebooks, the “Keyboard Monument” is listed as a culturally significant object. Tourist "Red line", passing through the main attractions of the city, includes this unusual monument.

Despite the impressive weight, until June 2011, the F1, F2, F3, Y keys were stolen. And vandals applied the Apple logo to the Windows key. In this regard, Perm Museum of Contemporary Art PERMM proposed to move the “Keyboard Monument” to Perm, since no one in Yekaterinburg takes care of it. However, the initiative group, which included Evgeny Zorin, Lidia Karelina and the author of the project Anatoly Vyatkin, together with the Union Trucks company, took up the restoration of the monument. On August 17, 2011, the lost keys were restored. The group also drafted an appeal to the city administration to enter the monument into the register. cultural property. From the same year, subbotniks and cultural events began to be held at the keyboard, during which the keys are cleaned and painted, and various competitions are held, for example, a championship in throwing non-working computer mice, lifting bundles of hard drives, etc.

In 2015, after the death of Evgeny Zorin, who did a lot for the development of the IT industry in Yekaterinburg, a commemorative plaque with a QR code was installed on the End key, with which anyone can find out brief information about him.

In October 2005, on the left bank of the river. Iset, Sverdlovsk region, a unique land art object appeared - a monument to the keyboard on a scale of 30:1. The author of the project, Anatoly Vyatkin, a resident of Yekaterinburg, spent a month cutting keys out of concrete, and another week to install them on the embankment hometown. The installation of the keyboard in the QWERTY layout was carried out using special equipment: the weight of standard keys varied from 80 to 500 kg, and the "space" weighed no less than a car - 1.5 tons.

The finished installation has gained unprecedented popularity among citizens and tourists, who have adapted the structural elements for benches for relaxation. Unfortunately, the keyboard did not escape the fate of the majority Russian monuments: vandals uprooted and carried away the F1, F2, F3 and Y keys in an unknown direction, and the Apple logo was applied to the Windows key. In 2011, the monument was restored by the efforts of enthusiasts. Currently, the collection of signatures in favor of including the installation in the list of culturally significant objects of the city and region has been completed. The relevant project has been submitted to the local authorities for consideration.

What to see

The concrete keyboard consists of 104 keys spaced 15 cm apart. Installation size 16x4 sq. m so organically fit into the surrounding landscape that the townspeople renamed the nearby objects in the "computer key": r. Iset turned into an I-network, and a rectangular stone building on the side of the monument became known as the "system block".

Enthusiasts are in favor of installing computer mouse and modem monuments next to the keyboard, but the matter has not yet gone further than planning.

The monument to the keyboard has become so firmly established in the life of the townspeople that no one will remember when and at whose suggestion the well-known for the whole of Yekaterinburg “Subbotniks on the keyboard” began to be held near it - events for painting and cleaning keys, accompanied by various contests like throwing non-working computer mice and lifting bundles of hard drives weighing several kg.

On ordinary days, tourists crowd around the keyboard: according to local belief, those who manage to “type” their innermost desire on it by jumping on the keys will certainly find what they want. This is not as easy to do as it seems, but there is no end to those who want to try their luck. According to another belief, those who “press” the Cntr, Alt and Delete keys in sequence will “reboot” life and open a new, happy page in it. If this turns out to be too much for someone, you can simply press Delete - and remove from life all unnecessary, obsolete. True or not, it is difficult to judge, nevertheless, the townspeople are no longer surprised when they notice a person jumping on the keys - another seeker of happiness.

Practical information

The monument was erected in Yekaterinburg, opposite the street. Gorky, between houses 14a and 28a. You can get to it by bus No. 19 or trolleybuses No. 1, 5, 6, 9, 11, 15 (stop "Federation of Trade Unions"‎).
