Living Pages of War and Peace: Gadgets Make Literature Stronger. Project "Live Pages Heroes and Fates

The WFYS hosted a demo show "Technologies that change the world" - within the framework of the "Industries of the Future" program. The show included 2 slots: the "Live Pages" project, as well as Larisa Lapidus, Professor of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University, shared her developments in the framework of technologies that change the world.

The "Live Pages" project was presented by the journalist, radio and TV presenter Fyokla Tolstaya, who was greeted with thunderous applause. The project, which RG previously wrote about, is aimed at popularizing the classics of Russian literature. In the project, works are presented in a new, interactive format.

Thanks to computer analysis of the text, the table of contents of the project was turned into an infographic. For example, chapters of the novel "War and Peace" by Leo Tolstoy, which deal with war, are marked in red, and chapters in which the theme of war is not touched upon are marked in blue. All the key events described in the work, supplemented by comments, are placed on the timeline. In addition, you can choose any heroes you are interested in, trace the intersection of their destinies. And for each of the main characters created a card - "profile". Fekla Tolstaya, using a tablet, clearly demonstrated how this system works.

One interesting possibility is to find out which of the characters is most often mentioned in the novel using the citation index. When asked to the audience about who is the most mentioned hero, opinions were divided: someone answered that it was Andrei Bolkonsky, someone voted for Pierre, someone chose Natasha Rostova. As a result, it turned out that the rating is headed by Pierre Bezukhov.

The application includes works by such Russian classics as Nikolai Gogol, Alexander Pushkin, Fyodor Dostoyevsky. And about the technologies that will come to us in the coming decades, said Larisa Lapidus, professor at the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University. The audience was surprised when the professor announced that by 2035 there will be more than 40 digital factories working on neurotechnologies, biotechnologies and energy conservation.

Students of the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University are actively engaged in research and development in various fields sciences and technologies. So, Larisa Lapidus spoke about latest technology- with the help of a smartphone and a camera in the store, it will be possible to determine the taste of the product. And, for example, using satellite images, it will be possible to develop agricultural technologies or minimize environmental risks: monitor the level of chlorophyll in the fields or detect oil spills.

"Technologies penetrate our lives, change our tastes, form new habits, which ultimately affects our behavior and the structure of the economy. On the other hand, new technologies penetrate the production model, improve it and free a person from hard work," the speaker said and added: "Industry 4.0 technologies will change our lives, lead to new large-scale transformations."

The creators of the application decided to start with Leo Tolstoy's novel War and Peace. By the way, the team behind the project is impressive, including HSE linguists, Tolstoy Digital experts, and Samsung specialists. All literary comments were prepared by the philologist and honored teacher of Russia Lev Sobolev, and Thekla Tolstaya was the curator.
It turned out unusual - the application allows you to perceive the classics in a different way, helps to study the era of the novel in detail, gives the reader a lot of useful information concerning heroes, storylines, locations, and interesting facts from the field of history, geography and even linguistics.
In addition, "Live Pages" help to understand the relationship of individual characters - say, by the end of the second volume, you are a little confused about where and how many times Pierre and Count Bolkonsky met? It's simple: thanks to a special function, it is enough to select these heroes, and you will see the history of the intersection of their destinies separately from the rest of the text.

In addition to the unusual reading format, the application provides instant translation of all foreign remarks, and for a better understanding of the era described in the novel, a work calendar has been developed in which the most significant events of the novel are displayed on the timeline along with real ones. historical facts.
The Live Pages app also has entertaining content. For example, The Word Game explains the meaning of rare or obsolete words in one click, as in the usual Wikipedia, and participation in entertaining quizzes helps to test knowledge of the work, accumulating points for correct answers.
And in early October, users of the Live Pages got access to a number of new exciting features: the interactive Map of Events will show the places where the main events of the work unfolded, with a detailed description of them, quotes from the novel and a list of the characters who visited there. The map will cover all of Russia and some European cities.

For the main characters, personal dossiers and routes of their movements have been developed, you just need to select one of the heroes to trace his route - the places he has visited will be displayed on the map with a visual line.
“Our work, our scripts, are a way to discover and expose the internal connections of a novel, often invisible in the traditional “linear” perception of a text, and thus give the reader the opportunity for a new interactive way of understanding it,” says Anastasia Bonch-Osmolovskaya, Associate Professor at the School of Linguistics at the Higher School of Economics .
Tolstoy's "War and Peace" is just the beginning, all fans of classical Russian literature can take part in voting for next book, which will add to the application's interactive library. Voting takes place here.

In addition, the Living Pages project will become part of an unprecedented event - online readings of the novel War and Peace. From December 8 to 11, more than 1,300 people around the world will take part in the War and Peace. Reading a novel”, which is organized by the VGTRK holding. The readings will be broadcast live on TV and radio, as well as on the voinaimir.com website. Samsung is the technical partner of the project, providing its innovative technologies and unique materials developed for the Live Pages application and for creating an interactive visualization project for the novel on the website using various infographics and illustrations from the archives of the State Historical Museum.

The application is available for free download in stores Google Play and Galaxy Apps. At the end of October, a version of the application for tablets will be released.

H e read, hopelessly outdated! Outdated in the age of the smartphone! Throw off the ship of modernity! And it's all about her classical literature. However, world leaders in innovation strongly disagree. Do you want to ride around Russian estates in the carriage of Mr. Chichikov, look at the first ball of Natasha Rostova, walk along the route of Rodion Raskolnikov or get to know the Grand Schemer better? It's not difficult at all with the mobile app from Samsung Electronics.

About new life stage domestic classics we are talking with the creators of the Living Pages project.

Fyokla Thick, project curator, head of the Tolstoy Digital group.

- Fyokla, how did the idea of "Live Pages" come about? Who initiated the interactive format of reading literary classics?

- The idea was born in 2014 together with Samsung, with which the Tolstoy Museum has long-term partnerships and friendly relations. A little earlier, at the museum, together with a group of philologists from the Higher School of Economics, we launched the Tolstoy Digital project. We were interested in the possibilities of using digital tools in literature, what is called digital humanities. And we suggested Samsung to do mobile app, a "reader" of a new level, as we say, where interactive scenarios and other ways of navigating books could be applied. The project started in 2015m "War and Peace". We undertook a very difficult, but interesting stuff. And then you know: if you do what- That on the material of L.N. Tolstoy, it will be easier further.

It is obvious that a navigator would be of great help to the reader. big world characters and events of the epic novel. I remember that, while reading "War and Peace" as a schoolgirl, I subscribed to myself summary chapters, so that later, when you have to write an essay, you can quickly understand this array of text. It seemed to us that such solutions, only in a modern format, would be useful to the user of the application.

- Will the owner of a smartphone or tablet want to immerse himself in the classics?

- I don't know. But we have provided “hooks” everywhere to drag him into this beautiful world. All innovations and application scenarios are designed to lead to text. The biggest and most noticeable button is "Read", any second click leads to it. It is important for colleagues at Samsung to show that the gadgets that parents see in the hands of their children are not only a means of entertainment; they can help in education. For us, the project also became a serious challenge: how to communicate with a classic work in an interactive game form? And there is definitely such a request. Young people cannot fall in love with Russian classics just because they have to love them. We must go towards people who are used to reading from the screen, offer them what something interesting.

The project is social, mobile application is free. This is very important, especially considering that we started with Leo Tolstoy, who bequeathed to distribute his works freely. I note that the experience was the first, such applications are not known to us. We carefully monitor the comments and reviews that users leave on Google Play. Feedback helps to plan further development.

- What's on his shelves now? How is the repertoire formed?

- While it's mostly classical works included in the school curriculum. To date, the collection has 10 books in Russian and "War and Peace" in English: we want to further offer the project to foreign readers. The repertoire, or list of books, is actively expanding. According to the results of readers' voting, the second work available in the new format was in 2016m novel "Crime and Punishment" by F.M. Dostoevsky. Then the library was replenished with "Dead Souls" by N.V. Gogol and " Captain's daughter» A.S. Pushkin, "The Twelve Chairs" by Ilf and Petrov.

Last year, the collection included "Doctor Zhivago" by B. Pasternak, "Eugene Onegin" by A.S. Pushkin, "A Hero of Our Time" by M.Yu. Lermontov, " Quiet Don» M. Sholokhov. Finally, in December, the first modern novel- "Laurel" by Evgeny Vodolazkin.

- A work created today means contact with the copyright holder ...

- "Live Pages" is not only focused on the past, and we have long wanted to work with modern prose. Of course, in this case, copyright issues immediately arise. We offered the EKSMO-AST group of companies a joint project: release a line of modern Russian literature within the framework of the "Live Pages". But the application is free, and many books, the same "Laurus", are sold in in electronic format. It is clear that royalties are important, the writer must be able to continue to work. How to be? We must pay tribute to the leadership of "EKSMO-AST" and directly to the Editorial Board of Elena Shubina: we were given the rights to books for free use. The decision is unprecedented and very wise. The publishing house understands the importance of developing such projects and is ready to take steps in this direction to the detriment of itself, working to promote the book. And it is paper or electronic, for money or free of charge - these are the details. We also plan to cooperate with the largest e-book aggregator - the LitRes company.

- "The passage of time", "Fates", "Routes", other application scenarios allow you to compare the plot of the work with the facts of history, walk the routes literary heroes to get acquainted with the life of a distant era. Probably, the set of services is not exhausted?

- We have eight scripts, including an interactive table of contents. Remembering the classic joke that in “War and Peace” girls read only about peace, and boys read about war, we colored the chapters of the novel in the table of contents in two colors, respectively, about war and about peace. Separately, it tells about the main characters and their prototypes, given speech characteristics characters. A lot of new things can be learned from the audio tour, and quizzes and questions help to check how well the plot and rare words are understood.

I must say that now we are moving along the path of not increasing the number of scripts, but expanding the library. 90% of the comments on the Google Play download page are not about more scenarios, but about new content.

- How are the responsibilities and functionality distributed among the partners in the application?

Tolstoy Digital deals with content. Here it is necessary to name Anastasia Bonch-Osmolovskaya from the National Research University Higher School of Economics, who leads a group of young philologists and computational linguists. Maya Stravinskaya, the best infographics and visualization specialist in Russia, is also part of our group. The origins of the project were such well-known philologists as Boris Orekhov and Mikhail Gronas, they are also part of Tolstoy Digital. Their ideas largely formed the basis of the application. On several works, we worked with the philologist, teacher, author of the well-known commentaries on "War and Peace" for schoolchildren, Lev Sobolev. By the way, the comments with which we supply the texts are always written in a not too scientific language - briefly and clearly, for a wide audience.

Of course, we work closely with literary critics, linguists, historians, and museum workers. For example, the route of the hero of "Crime and Punishment" was verified with the St. Petersburg Museum of Dostoevsky. These appendix pages were made in collaboration with Boris Tikhomirov, a remarkable researcher of the writer's work. We have the ability to integrate with izi.TRAVEL, a platform for creating multimedia guides, so the reader, following the route of the hero of the novel, can listen to an audio tour, and the corresponding text fragments will appear on the screen.

ABBYY provided Compreno technology for information processing. The software developer Artikul is responsible for the technical part of the project. Samsung oversees and finances all of this.

How long does it take to publish a book? Does the next work add its own, unique, scenarios, or does it fit into the general format of the application? Which book was the most difficult to adapt to Living Pages?

- We do not have the task of mechanically cramming books into a template, although there is, of course, a certain algorithm. Philologists immediately work in a specially created program, where they insert quotes, information about characters, maps. For each book, it takes approximately two months to prepare the content - even if there are experts and the rights to ready-made comments have been bought out, which are already adapted to the application format.

From the point of view of adaptation, Lavr turned out to be quite difficult. For the first time we worked in direct contact with the author, and it was important to get his support and approval. In addition, we encountered technological difficulties: the chapters in the Lavra are numbered as it was done in Old Russian: in letters below the title. It was necessary to introduce a special font into the application, and we succeeded. You know, the most interesting thing that makes a creative job is finding the tools to bring the features of the book into the script. In the case of Vodolazkin's novel, The Passage of Time turned out to be very laconic, but unusual. For example, when the hero passes through the cities of Europe, he finds himself in the place where Auschwitz will arise in a few centuries. Interactive made it possible to emphasize that time is illusory, and the events of the 15th and 20th centuries. are adjacent. This decision pleased the author, who noted that we managed to find visual ways to convey his idea. Now we are approaching dramaturgy, and completely different scenarios are possible there.

- What are the app download statistics and how do you plan to promote it? Who is he - a reader of "Live Pages"?

In 2017, we overcame the bar of 200 thousand downloads, we want to be more active in promotion. We are supported by the Literary Guild, the Russian Textbook corporation, and Samsung has a project on tablets for schoolchildren. We presented the project at Sirius (Sochi Educational Center for Gifted Children. -Note. ed.) and not just talked about the "Live Pages", but asked the guys to come up with new scenarios and act as experts. The results were very interesting.

On the other hand, we hope to promote our products more effectively by cooperating with the largest publishing holding EKSMO-AST and the electronic aggregator LitRes. We will also be more active in social media - having expanded our library, we can now offer readers not just one book, but a whole collection. A separate direction is access to the international market. I believe that our projects are of interest to Slavists, students of the Russian language.

Readers of "Live Pages" are not only schoolchildren. Of course, we focused on teenagers, understanding their motivation: you need to pass an essay. But the parents of the children choose the application for their own pleasure, and such readers are especially dear to us. I can well imagine these people traveling with our application in the subway. They are interested in interacting with books that have already been read in a new way through the Live Pages scenarios.

Sergey PEVNEV, Director of Corporate Projects and Government Relations, Samsung Electronics CIS Headquarters

- Sergey, Samsung Electronics is engaged in various directions in the culture and education of Russia. Why was it decided to support the Living Pages project?

Our first sponsorship project related to Russian culture started even before the appearance of the Samsung Electronics office in Russia - immediately after the establishment of diplomatic relations with the Republic of Korea. Samsung Electronics is the oldest partner of the State Academic Bolshoi Theater(1991), partner State Hermitage(1997), co-founder, together with the museum-estate " Yasnaya Polyana”, the eponymous all-Russian literary prize(2003). Since 2013 Samsung is a technical partner State Museum-Reserve"Peterhof", since 2014 - the official partner of the Moscow Museum of Modern Art.

We pay serious attention to supporting initiatives in the field of education. The largest project in this area is the program additional education IT SCHOOL SAMSUNG, which in the next five years will cover more than 5 thousand students in more than 20 cities of Russia. Since 2014, the company has been a partner of the TeachKnow project aimed at creating a unified social and educational space for children undergoing long-term treatment. In May 2015, Samsung Electronics and WorldSkills Russia, an agency for the development of professional communities and workers, signed a cooperation agreement under which Samsung acts as an official supplier. In particular, the company provides bench equipment and consumables for regional and national stages competitions, and also trains team members for participation in WorldSkills competitions on the basis of the Technical educational center Samsung in Moscow.

As for the Living Pages, in 2014 we conducted a study to find out those areas of life that Russians are proud of. Science, space, sports were named, but most of all the respondents spoke about culture. In particular, about Russian classical literature, despite the fact that statistics until 2016 showed a decline in interest in reading. Since our electronic devices are able to provide innovative interaction with literature, we decided to support the restoration of interest in the book through interactive mobile technology. This was the basis of the project, which received support and approval at the level of the global headquarters of Samsung Electronics. The decision on a specific format was made jointly with the project curator Fyokla Tolstaya and the Tolstoy digital group.

- If I'm not mistaken, is the project unique and has no analogues in the world?

- Can we expect the appearance of "Live Pages" in the school curriculum?

We cooperate with various organizations, including with the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia, where we meet with understanding and support. I note that the application took first place in the nomination "Russian World" III All-Russian competition best practices of employers in the development of human capital "Creating the Future". We are definitely moving in the direction school curriculum. The list of works was initially selected in such a way as to attract the student audience. The functionality implemented in the application allows you to write essays more interesting and better, contributes to a deeper understanding of the work, helps to quickly find desired episodes and quotes. Therefore, we will soon begin joint work with the methodological center. Based on the application will be prepared guidelines For school lessons literature.
