THE GENUINE HISTORY OF THE BOLSHOI THEATER

WITH Tanislavsky, who said that the theater begins with a hanger, did not mean a wardrobe at all, but a dressing room hidden from prying eyes in the theatrical bowels. This hanger is a completely different story.

COMING TO THE BIG

You can't just get into the Big One! The first time, when he tried to get a job, they didn't take him. There was no one to say a word for me. They accepted me from the second entry as a security guard, and from there to the props, and only then to the costumers. Please note: there are never job advertisements in the Bolshoi. The theater does not need people from the outside, who do not care what to do - wash the floors or put on a fur coat on the artist: as long as they pay. We need those who love this business. You won't earn much money here. So they come to us mainly by acquaintance. And that's okay. If I know that a person sincerely loves music, I can recommend him. I'll be responsible for it later. Ninety percent of the attendants in the theater are fans of their work. Sick people, whoever you take. For example, I can work at night. Last year, when the Japanese filmed our "Boris Godunov" on video, we worked hard for two nights in a row. First, until midnight, they dismantled the scenery " Queen of Spades", then until two o'clock they installed "Boris", and finished recording only at half past six in the morning.

It would seem that it doesn't matter which theater to work in, but no, I can't. I love music very much. Once I tried to leave the Bolshoi, even got a job at the Helikon-Opera, but I could not hold out even for half a year. It would seem that the same music, the same Carmen, but she sits there on the barrel - wildness! It's like working in a cafeteria after a restaurant. Here, at the Bolshoi, Carmen was different. But what! Arkhipov and Obraztsov. They even came out in different forms. Arkhipova - in low-heeled shoes, Obraztsova - barefoot. Both one and the other constantly sang with Jose - Sotkilava, but he killed them in different ways: Arkhipov - with a knife in the side. Exemplary - in the chest. I don't know why, and the mise-en-scenes were all staged in different ways... So, returning to my service in "Helikon". I thought, thought and decided: than so, better than no music at all. Better dig ditches. After all, when the performance begins, the brains are no longer here, but there ... Every day I looked at the program of the Bolshoi Theater and suffered: “Today there Olezhka Biktimirov the Stargazer sings in The Golden Cockerel, and I am here, poor fellow.” Could not stand it - and back to the Bolshoi.

LEAVING THE BIG

Leaving the Bolshoi is easier than getting there. There was a man - and there is no man. It is not customary for us to arrange farewell banquets, at least I have never seen "big" people somehow seen off. Maybe somewhere up there, something similar is happening. And so that the entire theater, the entire troupe and staff - never. Here in the choir, everything is completely different. After all, they are always together: on tour, at rehearsals, they play chess together, they eat together. Celebrate the arrival of the new and the departure of the old. Everything is simple there. There is no such thing as “You are better than me, I am worse than you”...

I don’t know about others, but personally I was very sorry when Vladimir Atlantov left. It's like pulling a big ruby out of the crown: the crown will remain, but it's not the same anymore. Previously, according to the charter of the theater, the soloist was obliged to sing four performances a month. But, of course, no one did. Everyone went to work abroad, and Atlantov somehow went to Austria. I sang there once and earned as much as I would have received in the theater in three months. Soon after that incident, he had to leave the Bolshoi: he left, and he took his wife Tamara Milashkina. The “lumps” are gone, and some kind of “zilch” has been substituted in their place...

Sometimes it gets so bad from all this that the last desire to work on the performance disappears. When he sings good singer you listen with your mouth open. And here you are just serving backstage for the prescribed forty minutes, waiting for the action to end. And all the time you think: “Well, to hell with him! He will not run away from you anywhere - he will change clothes. I'd rather go to the buffet while I drink coffee. There is a difference: dress talent or mediocrity.

Or with Liepa. When I was appointed costume designer at the ballet, Liepa had to work in the theater for some two months. And then he was “asked”, and the man died, in general, because of this. Not because they were fired, but because they stopped letting me into the theater. On that day, Liepa came, as usual, to the fifteenth entrance of the Bolshoi Theater, and the security guard gave him a list of the theater employees who had been fired the day before, where his last name was also listed ... I remember his last Spartak well. There was the same performance as usual: half an hour before the start, a spitting image of Crassus sat in front of me. Dressed up and made up. He sat with some "Culture" or "Pravda" in his hands. I looked at the newspaper, but I don't think I saw anything there. Just to get rid of everything. Gathered - and "to fight" ...

"Spartacus" is the only performance in ballet repertoire, after which everyone is given one day to rest. Even the corps de ballet. And then Maris quickly passed, became overweight, maybe his heart no longer pulled. He was then over forty, and the dancer's retirement age was thirty-five. Although Vasiliev went over even more.

I'm not talking about Plisetskaya at all. She will forever remain a girl. Many were horrified when Shchedrin made Anna Karenina and The Seagull for her. Can you imagine the seventy-year-old Nina Zarechnaya or Karenina? At that time, many said that Shchedrin's ballets were not a dance, but fussing around the stage, that Shchedrin, through them, extended Plisetskaya's life in ballet. Even friends said: “Well, where are you all reaching for? You don't have much money, do you?" And the cleaners generally whispered: "Look, Maya Mikhailovna has crawled." It's all out of envy... Great woman.

WORK DAYS

The dressing room is an amazing place in the theater, from which you can see almost everything. How someone relates to their work, who has what problems, who did not get enough sleep, or maybe the mood is bad. Suppose they are giving an opera. Careless soloists come running 15 minutes before going on stage, some Kolya Baskov or Oleg Biktimirov. And, for example, Zurab Lavrentievich Sotkilava - never! Such solid soloists respect both themselves and us. We are dressing them. This is hellish work! And not only physical. Whole service staff comes three hours before the start of the performance, but I am an hour ahead of everyone else. Habit. The morning shift had already prepared all the costumes for me - Susanin's undershirt, fur coats, caftans. I take a gurney and use a large elevator to lower it down to where the soloists' dressing rooms are. I know that in this one, for example, Sotkilava undresses: he will never sit in another. And here is Yuri Mazurok, his implacable enemy. If a simpler singer like Nesterenko comes across, he will wave his hand: "Well, mine is busy, let's change here." And Sotkilava sits dissatisfied, grumbles, asks for tea. The floor attendant brings him a seagull: “Zurab Lavrentievich, maybe you want a sandwich? Mazurok has almost changed clothes. You look, he will thaw, thaw and calm down. Only in the former Chaliapin's dressing room, everyone and sundry undress, regardless of rank.

My relationship with soloists is different with everyone. For example, with Oleg Biktimirov we can drink champagne after the performance. While I'm putting it on, you can talk about football and anything. He is a fan of Spartak, I have been a fan of Torpedo all my life. And Sotkilava tells us everything about his Dynamo Tbilisi. He used to play by himself.

I am almost sure: if I turned to Plisetskaya with a request: “Maya Mikhailovna, give me a hundred rubles,” she would not refuse. And I would not have approached Ulanova. Misha Lavrovsky, in my opinion, the whole theater loves. An amazing guy, with everyone: “Hello, hello” - he greets from the heart, and not only out of duty or through gritted teeth, if only he lags behind. With the dancer Irek Mukhamedov (he now works in Austria), we shook hands, although this, in general, is not accepted here. It is believed that they are first class, and we are second. But we are the same component their lives as they are ours. Without us, they have nothing to do in the theater. They don't dress up anyway. They just physically can't do it. These suits are like an astronaut's spacesuit. Here, for example, is Ivan Susanin's fur coat. Oh heavy. Sheepskin coat weighs five.

If today Nesterenko sings Susanin, he appears in the theater at half past six. He sits down and comes to his senses for about twenty minutes: he is talking to someone, as if there is no performance. Well, I'm sitting in the corridor, waiting for the call. Then he shouts to me: "Andrey, let's get dressed!" Well, I'm slowly putting it on. First, in a fur coat, in which he enters in the first act. It looks like it, looks like it, then says: “Well, take it off: something is very hot.” I'll undress him. He sits in one bottom shirt. Resting. If there is a mood, maybe he will talk to you. He will tell you what he saw on TV. And then his head hurts or something else - ordinary everyday affairs. He doesn't complain, he just talks. What is he to complain about? I'm not a doctor or a priest. I started working with the choir, it’s easier there: ordinary men, only with voices.

There are, of course, different situations, the suit is tight or something. But this is already called a whim. I persuade Sotkilava: “Well, look: you have a label here: “Sotkilava”. You say that the suit is too small for you, you start to grumble (this, of course, I already think to myself). You sang in it that time.” He justifies himself: "I must have gotten fat." And I told him: “There is no other: I won’t get him from the sky.” On the other hand, try to give the same Nesterenko a Seleznev suit, one of whose arms has been amputated. But once it happened. I say to Nesterenko: “Well, kill me, well, your suit is torn, so what to do now?”

It happens that you end up dressing him in “what is,” but he just can’t get used to the image: “Well, I don’t have a voice today, well, no, what can I do. I drank some water and drank coffee. I’ll go for a run a couple of floors up and down, sweat, maybe a voice will appear. Many say so. Both Nesterenko and Baskov. And earlier - Evgeny Shapin, Alexander Voroshilo.

About fifteen years ago, of course, there was a terrible case when Voroshilo lost his voice. Everyone was surprised how he even finished singing his Scarpia then. According to the script, at the end of the first act of Tosca, he climbed the spiral staircase and finished his aria already at the top of the tower. It was here that his voice broke once. The conductor urgently “turned off” the action, a doctor immediately appeared, injected Voroshilo with something in his throat. And he, imagine, finished singing, “creaked”. After this performance, he no longer sang with us.

PERSPECTIVES

I am very jealous of the Bolshoi Theater and believe that it is, if not in the top three, then in the top five. the best theaters peace. And the Mariinsky Theater is in sixth place ... Here I am sitting here with you in complete silence (this is happening in Great Hall conservatory. - M.S.), and there is such a rumble all day long. We've all been living this hum for a long, long time. How the cacophony will begin there from the very morning, and until the very performance. In the evening you come home, but you still have “Onegin” in your ears ... Once, forgetting from all this music, I went on stage during a performance. There was "Khovanshchina". I went to the buffet, thought about something of my own and ... I see the audience in the hall with peripheral vision. And I'm in a black work robe. The assistant director shows me signs: “What are you? Abnormal?" I think: back to go or what? So until the end of the performance, he stood on the stage.
