Historical reference

The Moscow Military Music School is the only educational institution of secondary vocational (musical) education in the Russian Armed Forces, which traces its history back to the 2nd Moscow School of Military Music Pupils of the Red Army, established in 1937 by a joint decree of the People's Commissariat of Defense of the RSFSR and the People's Commissariat of Education RSFSR.

The school was formed from musically gifted boys from orphanages, the children of those who fell heroically in the battles for the freedom and independence of our Motherland. The school was given the task of teaching and educating young musicians to replenish the military bands of the Red Army.

The first head of the school was Lieutenant Colonel Bank Leonid Nikolayevich (1937-1939).

Since 1938, pupils have been participating in parades on Red Square. In 1940, for the first time, high confidence was given to drummers and fanfare players - to open parades of the troops of the Moscow garrison on Red Square.

The first graduation of the school took place on July 10, 1940. The participants of the first issue became front-line soldiers, including military musicians of the heroic Brest, defenders of Leningrad, participants in the Battle of Stalingrad, Battle of Kursk and the storming of Berlin. During the days of the battle for Moscow, pupils of the school carried out the combat mission of guarding and defending the military facilities of the capital.

From June to November 1941, the personnel of the school guarded the alternate airfield near the station. Klyazma, and also defended buildings near Krymskaya Square as part of air defense posts. 15-year-old boys fearlessly dealt with enemy incendiary bombs and heroically defended Moscow.

Pupils of the school fell to the death of the brave in battles with the enemy during the war years: Pyotr ANTONOV, Yevgeny BOGDANOV, Vladimir UNKNOWN, Turukhan BIKBAEV, Ivan KARPENKO, Vasily KOLTYREV, Georgy MIKLOSHI, Nikolai NIKITENKO, Vasily YASHIN.

Since November 1941, in order to create the necessary academic work conditions, the school was transferred to the city of Namangan, Uzbek SSR, where two graduations were prepared.

In 1944, the school returned to Moscow and was located in the village of Saltykovka, and later in the area of Abelmanovsky Zastava.

After the end of the Great Patriotic War the school is transferred to the base of the former rest home in one of the most picturesque corners of the Moscow region - the village of Troitse-Lykovo.

In 1956, the 2nd Moscow School of Military Music Students was transformed into the Moscow Suvorov Military Music School. In 1960 it was renamed into the Moscow Military Music School.

In 1978, the school was transferred to the area of Teply Stan and since 1981, according to the order of the Ministry of Education of the USSR and the directive of the General Staff, it has become the Moscow Military Music School.

Since the formation of the Moscow Military Music School, it has been led by 12 heads of the school:

lieutenant colonel Bank Leonid Nikolaevich (from 1937-1939)
Quartermaster II rank Aranovich Boris Lvovich (since 1939-1940)

Alexander Petrovich Gerasimov, Colonel, Honored Artist of Russia, head of the Moscow Military Music School, talks about this unique and one of a kind educational institution. For almost 80 years, students of this educational institution open military parades on Red Square. Young men who receive education in it combine and improve the skill of an artist and the prowess of a Russian warrior. Its graduates form the basis of the Russian military orchestra service.

Text: Vera Rzhevkina and Andrey Musket

– The military music school is a unique institution where military discipline is combined with the freedom of the spirit of art. What, in your opinion, are the main advantages of such education?

- It seems to me that the main advantage of our educational institution is the atmosphere created in the school and providing an opportunity for young men aged 15-16 who have entered our school to study music without distraction. When I was graduating from a civil music school, I had many temptations. There are no such temptations here.

- How is the training program formed? How much time is devoted to music and how long does military training take?

- The training program is formed on the basis of the federal state educational standard (FSES) of secondary vocational education, established by the relevant decree of the government of the Russian Federation. Military training, contrary to false rumors, is not very much. In percentage terms, this is no more than 10%. Basically, these are the initial basics of military training, of course, drill training as a profile. We train military musicians with the further aim of obtaining a higher military musical education, therefore the skill of musicians in the ranks is the most important professional component of a military musician.

– Who are the young people who come to study with you today? What are their expectations and motivations?

- Different. Especially at the time of entry. Most of the children are brought by the hand by their parents, especially mothers. Unfortunately, young men at the age of 15-16 - and this has been proven by psychologists - rarely independently and consciously choose future profession. As a rule, in such a period of uncertainty, young men do not know where to go to do. Many go here as to a music school, perceive the school as a kind of additional education where it's just fun to make music. Parents are more aware of the prospects of such education. I would say that the strength of the school and its teaching staff lies in the created atmosphere of lively creativity, which makes it possible for the fourth, graduating course to prepare specialists from our students who have decided on their choice of profession, clearly follow this choice and have very good prospects.

- How does it develop further fate graduates? Do alumni participate in the life of the school?

- Yes. The pride of our school is, of course, our graduates. In general, I am confident in the universality of the principle: an educational institution is highly rated when its graduates are highly rated. Only then can an educational institution be assessed as good and providing good basic training. The bulk of our graduates enter the Military Institute of Military Conductors of the Military University of the Ministry of Defense (the prototype of a modern university is the Military Faculty of the Moscow State Conservatory, which was created in 1935 on the basis of the Department orchestra faculty conservatory). This university is our main customer, and the best of the best go there to later become officers, military conductors and join a small, but very glorious squad of military conductors. Some of the graduates continue their musical education in leading specialized universities: the Moscow Conservatory named after P.I. Tchaikovsky, Russian Academy music named after the Gnesins, the Schnittke Institute, the Moscow State Institute of Culture, etc. Some graduates immediately after graduating from college serve in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. And here we can proudly say that our graduates, even not the strongest, are in demand in any military creative team as well-trained, knowing the basics military service firsthand, who know how to act correctly in the ranks, who have perfectly mastered the service-combat repertoire. And, as a rule, our graduates form the backbone of military creative teams.

– Is it the only educational institution of its kind in the world?

- Yes. To date, this is the only educational institution in the world where young people are fully supported by the state with full cycle residence. Although this year on September 1, a cadet school similar to ours was opened, but not within the framework of the Ministry of Defense, but on the basis of the Moscow state institute culture, within the framework of the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation. On the territory of this institute there is a cadet musical corps, where children are fully supported by the state.

- A company of drummers traditionally opens parades on Red Square, which confirms the legendary status of the educational institution. How is the preparation for this event going?

– First of all, about this military ritual. The military parade on Red Square is the main, most basic and very first of the military rituals that exists in the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation. And to take part in it is a great honor, but also a huge responsibility. Literally from the moment the Military Music School was founded as a prototype of our school (the school was established in 1937), since 1938, drummers have taken part in the parade, and since 1940 they have been honored to open all military parades on Red Square. This magnificent tradition is nearly 77 years old. As for the training... Well, first of all, a company of drummers is being trained as part of the entire ceremonial calculation, and the ceremonial calculation begins to prepare from November of the previous year. In order to participate in the military parade in 2016, we will begin preparations from November 2015. The active part of the training begins in the third decade of March and until May 9, as part of the consolidated training of the troops of the Moscow garrison. But before that, there is a lot of work to be done on individual training, coordination of ranks, training and training directly in drumming. A company of drummers in the amount of 90 people participates in the parade. Of these, there are no more than eight professional drummers, all the rest are brass players who must master drumming, the so-called “March No. 1”, performing which, they will then proudly and with maximum efficiency pass the first parade on foot along Red Square.

- What other traditions exist that are preserved in the school to this day?

- One of these traditions is the preparation of the combined orchestra of the school to perform at the best concert venues in Moscow and other major cities. The school has a large creativity, having which, it would be completely wrong not to show it to the audience. Moreover, any performance of a musician in public is the best practical training, since you can train a musician for a long time and correctly, but if the musician does not perform, he does not have the opportunity to show his art in public, he cannot see and hear the listener's reaction to his performance, he will never become a musician, he will remain a student.

– The orchestra of the school tours a lot both within the country and abroad. What place does the school occupy on an international scale, and what, perhaps, is the peculiarity of the Russian school?

- Regarding the Russian school ... Yes, a good question. For 16 years there has been a big project called "Suvorov Days in Switzerland". It has been held for more than 15 years every year in the last ten days of September. In addition, we participate in the international festival "Tattoo on Stage", which is held in Lucerne. We perform together with recruits (Swiss military musicians of the first draft) from Aarau (German: Aarau). This is a recruiting school in Switzerland that trains military musicians. True, there are older guys. This project is very dear to us, because Switzerland has a very honest audience. Against the background of performances by Western European orchestras - and not only Swiss orchestras perform there, bands from Italy, Germany, Great Britain come there, last year from New Zealand - the national palette of the military is extensive, the performance of our guys is perceived, as a rule, with a bang. Even though in purely professional terms, our children sometimes make inaccuracies that are characteristic of students.

But due to the correct use of agogics * in music, when not only sounds are extracted, not only some strokes are performed, but music is performed with spiritual uplift, with a certain mood, Suvorovites carry the audience with them, and the grateful audience responds with warmth. Our music, being very emotional, in a good performance, touches the strings inside quite strongly, even for "cold" European listeners, such as the Swiss. As a sign of special disposition, the Swiss public stands up and gives a standing ovation for a long time. This is a manifestation of the highest degree of admiration among quite spoiled Europeans.

- What, in your opinion, is the most interesting foreign festival where you have participated?

We are often invited to various foreign festivals. But we, unfortunately, cannot afford to accept such invitations often. For several years, the organizers of a very large festival in Basel, Switzerland, have been trying to get our participation. But we can’t, because this time falls just on vacation. And we have no right to disrupt the educational process. We were invited to Scotland for the Edinburgh Festival, one of the oldest, for the same reasons we turned down the offer, because participation in the festival could interfere with the educational process.

Suvorov orchestras have taken part in many foreign festivals, but I can safely say that one of the brightest, most powerful, largest military wind music festivals is now taking place not outside our Fatherland, but right here, here in Moscow, on Krasnaya square, and is called the Spasskaya Tower. This year it was held for the eighth time. This festival is truly global. Comparing the foreign festivals we have seen, knowing how they are held, there is almost nothing nearby: in terms of scale, in terms of the resources that are involved in this festival, in terms of programs. "Spasskaya Tower" - now really best festival on a global scale. Although it sounds pathetic, it is really true.

- And what exactly does participation in such a large large-scale festival like "Spasskaya Tower"?

- First of all, the opportunity to see another performing school. A musician who does not listen to other performers cannot develop. That is why festivals are good because there is an opportunity to listen to your colleagues. Secondly, you get to know a different musical culture, it always enriches you, you hear different music with a different national flavor, a different national flavor. Well, and, perhaps, the most important thing is the opportunity to see your location, so to speak, to see where you are in comparison with other creative teams - higher, lower, very far to the side or very close, or ahead of the rest - to feel your place in this temporary segment: how ready you are, how you meet modern standards.

– I know that you cooperate with well-known Russian musicians. Tell us about this experience.

- We cannot boast of a very large volume of concert performances, because our main purpose is still study, in contrast to military creative teams, which are intended to participate in military rituals, provide musical support for various events and prepare concert programs. We are often invited to participate in various federal events. There was an experience of performing with Oleg Gazmanov, Iosif Davydovich Kobzon, at one time they performed with Alexandra Nikolaevna Pakhmutova - these are very pleasant memories. For the third year, the school's orchestra has been successfully participating in the Invasion rock festival, which takes place in the Tver region. At the last festival, the orchestra performed together with Diana Arbenina, who, in her interviews, spoke in excellent tones about working with us.

– How is the repertoire formed in the orchestra in general? Eat contemporary works?

We provide academic education. Therefore, without knowledge of the classics, without the performance of academic music, it is simply impossible to “lay down” the correct performing basis. It must be admitted that the repertoire of military orchestras is not as huge, not as luxurious as that of symphony and even folk orchestras. Of course, there is an anthology of works for brass bands, especially marching music. First of all, such "pillars" of military marches as Semyon Chernetsky, Nikolai Ivanov-Radkevich, Viktor Runov, Dmitry Pertsev, Julius Khait, etc. - marches that are included in the golden collection of Russian military music, old Russian marches. A fairly large repertoire of wonderful works by Soviet composers. It should be noted that for brass band V Soviet period wrote a lot of good music. Now contemporary authors writing music for brass bands, it is not enough, and good authors can be counted on the fingers. Many contemporary composers they are fond of the so-called modern vision of music... I don't want to criticize it, it has the right to exist, it must, of course, develop, but it is quite far from academic music - good classical music.

Thank God that we have a modern author of military marches - Valery Mikhailovich Khalilov, a truly outstanding author who writes a magnificent wind music. He wrote many beautiful marches, wonderful works for a brass band - lyrical, unfortunately, not so well known. The music is very kind and emotional, and almost no one writes such music for brass bands now.

In addition to the large wind orchestra, the school has a big band that performs jazz music, there are instrumental ensembles that also play rock music, there is a whole palette of genres subject to wind players. In the system of additional education, which functions as a creative laboratory, there are a vocal studio, academic and Orthodox choirs, a choreography studio, in a word, all areas that may be of interest to young musicians. The best performing projects, such as the Spasskaya Tower or the Philharmonic Concert, are born at the intersection of these creative directions.

- In addition to this question: are there any fundamental differences in the organization of the orchestra, in the repertoire from other military orchestras, both ours and foreign ones?

- No, no, you know, the principles of teaching music are universal and go from teacher to student. This is how it was a thousand years ago, and still remains. And training in an orchestra cannot fundamentally differ, everything follows the same principle - from individual training through ensemble performance to playing music as part of an orchestra. This universal principle. He works both in the East and in the West, in Eurasia - anywhere, anywhere in the world.

- Is the current curriculum at the school different from the one that was before?

- I would say it has become more intense, more versatile. If you want to engage in such a genre as rock, please, to your health. Do you want to do choreography? Yes, there is such an opportunity, we have an excellent additional education. Do you want to do martial arts? Please, there is a great master, sambo coach. Now the range of opportunities for obtaining any competencies from modern Suvorovites has greatly expanded. Therefore, if our young man suddenly does not go to any additional education, we begin to look at him with caution, because he must develop himself not only in music, but also in something else. It must be busy 24 hours a day, because four years is the period during which we must invest as much as possible in the heart, soul, brain of a Suvorov good emotions, more good knowledge, teach the art of music. And this is impossible without a broad outlook, without the desire to absorb as much information as possible. A musician who is “fixated” only on his “native” instrument is primitive and cannot be a good performer. Any good musician, as a rule, is interested in all genres, tries to try himself almost everywhere - he listens a lot, plays music a lot, he is sure to be born Feedback with those who listen. Then it becomes a master.

- What emotions would you like to evoke in the audience during the speech?

- Variety. We make sure every year big program in any concert hall Moscow. You can call it a reporting concert, in which a combined orchestra takes part, consolidated choir, definitely a big band, in a word - everything creative teams currently available at the school. Concerts are held with full halls, we have our own admirers, our fans, which is very nice. The goal of any concert is to “hook” the listener. It can be some kind of bright emotions, on the verge of humor, or maybe, on the contrary, mournful ones that make you think. Any mood. When our boys see the response of the audience, when they see through applause, through the reaction of the audience, through empathy, that their presentation musical material succeeded - the greatest, most wonderful moment comes when a musician is born. A sincere response from the viewer can be obtained only when there is a talented performance. If you play correctly, but you didn’t hurt, didn’t give any sensuality, didn’t lead anyone along with you ... well, at best, they will politely give you a couple of claps.

- Is studying at a military music school just education or is it a broader concept?

- In addition to a good education as such, according to state educational standards, they provide appropriate education here. It was for this purpose that the first cadet corps were created more than 300 years ago. Ivan Betsky, one of eminent figures education under Catherine II, in a memorandum to the Empress, he wrote about the need for educational institutions to educate a new breed of Russian nobles, where, in addition to teaching military art, they would educate, creating a sovereign person, taught to be such - a person who is oriented subsequently to serve the state, be it military career or civilian service. And the whole history of the Suvorov schools as such and, of course, our school confirms this. Graduates, as a rule, work honestly and hard for the good of the Fatherland, making up its glory and pride.

- Well, in conclusion, the image of a real man is often associated with a man in military uniform. What qualities do you think a college graduate should have?

- First of all - a good, strong professional. First of all.

– As a musician or as a soldier?

- It's inseparable. Military musician is a profession. The ability to work in a team, the ability to subordinate one's desires to a common desire, the ability to contribute to a common cause - these are all components of a military musician. In any, including the military-creative team. It's agility, it's concentration. In my opinion, one of strengths of our educational institution is the ability to teach our Suvorov students to work with the material. Fast and slick. Therefore, some of our graduates who have decided to change their professional trajectory altogether, to leave music - and there are such cases, they are few, fortunately, but there are - they go to MGIMO, and to Baumanka, and to the Military Medical Academy ... In such cases, it seemed would be, far from the musical, humanitarian training of the institution, and indeed they do! And they do it easily. For one simple reason - by this time they have mastered the teaching methods and the ability to organize the process in a military way. Any accomplished musician will say that talent is necessary, but without diligence, without the ability to assemble and organize oneself, it is worth nothing.
