An excerpt characterizing the Museums of Vilnius

- No Bonaparte. There is an emperor! Sacre nom… [Damn it…] he shouted angrily.
“Damn him to your emperor!”
And Dolokhov cursed in Russian, rudely, like a soldier, and, throwing up his gun, walked away.
"Let's go, Ivan Lukich," he said to the company commander.
“That’s how it is in the guardian style,” the soldiers in the chain began to speak. - Come on, Sidorov!
Sidorov winked and, turning to the French, began to babble incomprehensible words often, often:
“Kari, mala, tafa, safi, muder, kaska,” he muttered, trying to give expressive intonations to his voice.
- Go Go go! ha ha, ha, ha! Wow! Wow! - there was a roar of such healthy and cheerful laughter between the soldiers, involuntarily communicated to the French through the chain, that after that it seemed necessary to unload their guns, blow up the charges and disperse as soon as possible to everyone's homes.
But the guns remained loaded, the loopholes in the houses and fortifications looked forward just as menacingly, and just as before, the cannons turned against each other, removed from the limbers.

Having traveled the entire line of troops from the right to the left flank, Prince Andrei climbed the battery from which, according to the officer's headquarters, the entire field was visible. Here he got off his horse and stopped at the last of the four guns removed from the limbers. A sentry gunner walked ahead of the guns, stretched out in front of the officer, but at the sign made to him resumed his even, boring walk. Behind the guns were the limbers, still behind the hitching post and fires of the artillerymen. To the left, not far from the last gun, was a new wicker hut, from which animated officer voices were heard.
Indeed, from the battery, a view of almost the entire disposition of Russian troops and most of the enemy was opened. Directly opposite the battery, on the horizon of the opposite hillock, the village of Shengraben could be seen; to the left and to the right, in three places, among the smoke of their fires, masses of French troops could be distinguished, of which, obviously, most of them were in the village itself and behind the mountain. To the left of the village, in the smoke, it seemed that something like a battery, but with a simple eye it was impossible to see it well. Our right flank was located on a rather steep hill, which dominated the position of the French. Our infantry was stationed along it, and dragoons were visible at the very edge. In the center, where Tushin's battery was located, from which Prince Andrei examined the position, there was the most gentle and direct descent and ascent to the stream that separated us from Shengraben. To the left, our troops adjoined the forest, where the fires of our infantry chopping firewood smoked. The French line was wider than ours, and it was clear that the French could easily outflank us on both sides. Behind our position was a steep and deep ravine, along which it was difficult for artillery and cavalry to retreat. Prince Andrei, leaning on the cannon and taking out his wallet, drew for himself a plan for the disposition of the troops. In two places he made notes with a pencil, intending to communicate them to Bagration. He intended, firstly, to concentrate all the artillery in the center and, secondly, to transfer the cavalry back to the other side of the ravine. Prince Andrei, constantly being with the commander-in-chief, following the movements of the masses and general orders, and constantly studying historical descriptions battles, and in this forthcoming business he involuntarily considered the future course of hostilities only in general terms. He imagined only the following kind of major accidents: “If the enemy leads an attack on the right flank,” he said to himself, “the Kiev grenadier and Podolsk chasseurs will have to hold their position until the reserves of the center approach them. In this case, the dragoons can hit the flank and knock them over. In the event of an attack on the center, we set up the central battery on this hill and, under its cover, pull the left flank and retreat to the ravine in echelons, ”he reasoned to himself ...
All the time that he was on the battery at the gun, he, as often happens, without ceasing, heard the sounds of the voices of the officers speaking in the booth, but did not understand a single word of what they said. Suddenly the sound of voices from the booth struck him with such an intimate tone that he involuntarily began to listen.
“No, my dear,” said a pleasant and seemingly familiar voice to Prince Andrei, “I say that if it were possible to know what would happen after death, then none of us would be afraid of death. So, dove.
Another, younger voice interrupted him:
“Yes, be afraid, don’t be afraid, it doesn’t matter, you won’t pass it.”
- You're still afraid! Oh you learned people, said a third manly voice, interrupting both of them. - Then you, artillerymen, are very learned because you can bring everything with you, both vodka and snacks.
And the owner of the manly voice, apparently an infantry officer, laughed.
“But you’re still afraid,” continued the first familiar voice. You're afraid of the unknown, that's what. No matter how you say that the soul will go to heaven... after all, we know that there is no sky, but there is only one sphere.
Again the courageous voice interrupted the gunner.
“Well, treat yourself to your herbalist, Tushin,” he said.
“Ah, this is the same captain who stood at the sutler without boots,” thought Prince Andrei, recognizing with pleasure the pleasant philosophizing voice.
“You can have a herbalist,” Tushin said, “but all the same future life comprehend…
He did not agree. At this time, a whistle was heard in the air; closer, closer, faster and more audible, more audible and faster, and the core, as if not having finished everything that was needed, exploding spray with inhuman force, plopped into the ground not far from the booth. The earth seemed to gasp from a terrible blow.
At the same instant, little Tushin jumped out of the booth, first of all, with his pipe bitten on his side; his kind, intelligent face was somewhat pale. Behind him came the owner of a courageous voice, a dashing infantry officer, and ran to his company, buttoning up as he ran.

Prince Andrei stopped on horseback on the battery, looking at the smoke of the gun from which the cannonball flew out. His eyes darted across the vast expanse. He only saw that the hitherto motionless masses of the French were swaying, and that there really was a battery to the left. It hasn't blown smoke yet. Two French cavalry, probably adjutants, galloped up the mountain. Downhill, probably to strengthen the chain, a clearly visible small column of the enemy was moving. The smoke of the first shot had not yet dissipated, when another smoke and a shot appeared. The battle has begun. Prince Andrei turned his horse around and galloped back to Grunt to look for Prince Bagration. Behind him he heard the cannonade becoming more frequent and louder. Apparently, ours began to respond. Below, in the place where the parliamentarians were passing, rifle shots were heard.
Lemarrois (Le Marierois) with a formidable letter from Bonaparte had just galloped to Murat, and the ashamed Murat, wanting to make amends for his mistake, immediately moved his troops to the center and bypassing both flanks, hoping even before evening and before the arrival of the emperor to crush the insignificant one who stood in front of him, squad.
"Began! Here it is!" thought Prince Andrei, feeling how the blood began to rush to his heart more often. “But where? How will my Toulon be expressed? he thought.
Passing between the same companies that ate porridge and drank vodka a quarter of an hour ago, he everywhere saw the same quick movements of soldiers lining up and dismantling their guns, and on all faces he recognized the feeling of animation that was in his heart. "Began! Here it is! Scary and fun! the face of every soldier and officer spoke.
Before reaching the fortification under construction, he saw in the evening light a cloudy autumn day horsemen advancing towards him. The front man, in a cloak and cap with fur coats, rode a white horse. It was Prince Bagration. Prince Andrei stopped, waiting for him. Prince Bagration stopped his horse and, recognizing Prince Andrei, nodded his head to him. He continued to look ahead while Prince Andrei told him what he had seen.
Expression: "It has begun! here it is!" it was even on the strong brown face of Prince Bagration with half-closed, cloudy, as if sleepy eyes. Prince Andrei peered into this motionless face with restless curiosity, and he wanted to know whether he was thinking and feeling, and what he thought, what this man felt at that moment? "Is there anything at all behind that motionless face?" Prince Andrei asked himself, looking at him. Prince Bagration bowed his head, in agreement with the words of Prince Andrei, and said: “Good,” with such an expression as if everything that happened and that he was told was exactly what he had already foreseen. Prince Andrei, shoved from the speed of the ride, spoke quickly. Prince Bagration uttered the words with his oriental accent especially slowly, as if suggesting that there was nowhere to hurry. However, he trotted his horse in the direction of Tushin's battery. Prince Andrei, together with his retinue, went after him. Prince Bagration was followed by: an officer of the retinue, the prince's personal adjutant, Zherkov, an orderly, an officer on duty on a beautiful english horse, and a state official, an auditor, who, out of curiosity, asked to go to battle. The auditor, a stout man with a full face, looked around with a naive smile of joy, shaking on his horse, imagining a strange sight in his camlot overcoat on a furshtat saddle among hussars, Cossacks and adjutants.
“He wants to see the battle,” Zherkov said to Bolkonsky, pointing to the auditor, “but it hurt in the pit of the stomach.
“Well, that’s enough for you,” said the auditor, with a radiant, naive, and at the same time sly smile, as if he were flattered that he was the subject of Zherkov’s jokes, and as if he deliberately tried to appear more stupid than he really was.
- Tres drole, mon monsieur prince, [Very funny, my lord prince,] - said the officer on duty. (He remembered that in French the title prince is somehow especially pronounced, and he could not fix it in any way.)
At this time, they were all already approaching Tushin's battery, and a cannonball hit ahead of them.
- What did it fall? the auditor asked with a naive smile.
“French cakes,” said Zherkov.
- This is what they beat, then? the auditor asked. - What a passion!
And he seemed to be full of pleasure. As soon as he finished, an unexpectedly terrible whistle was heard again, suddenly ending with a blow to something liquid, and sh sh sh slap - a Cossack, riding a little to the right and behind the auditor, with his horse collapsed to the ground. Zherkov and the officer on duty crouched down in their saddles and turned the horses away. The auditor stopped in front of the Cossack, examining him with attentive curiosity. The Cossack was dead, the horse was still beating.
Prince Bagration, screwing up his eyes, looked around and, seeing the reason for the confusion that had occurred, turned away indifferently, as if saying: is it worth doing stupid things! He stopped the horse, with the reception of a good rider, leaned over a little and straightened the sword caught on the cloak. The sword was an old one, not like the one worn now. Prince Andrei recalled the story of how Suvorov in Italy presented his sword to Bagration, and at that moment this memory was especially pleasant to him. They drove up to the very battery at which Bolkonsky stood when he was examining the battlefield.
- Whose company? - Prince Bagration asked the fireworks, standing by the boxes.
He asked: whose company? but in essence he was asking: are you not timid here? And the fireworker figured it out.
“Captain Tushin, Your Excellency,” shouted a red-haired fireworker with a freckled face, stretching out in a cheerful voice.
- So, so, - said Bagration, thinking something, and drove past the limbers to the extreme gun.
While he was driving up, a shot rang out from this cannon, deafening him and his retinue, and in the smoke that suddenly surrounded the cannon, artillerymen were visible, grabbing the cannon and, hastily straining, rolling it back to its original place. A broad-shouldered, huge soldier of the 1st with a banner, legs wide apart, jumped back to the wheel. The 2nd, with a trembling hand, put a charge into the muzzle. A small, round-shouldered man, officer Tushin, stumbled on his trunk and ran forward without noticing the general and looking out from under his small hand.
“Add two more lines, that’s exactly what will happen,” he shouted in a thin voice, to which he tried to give a youthfulness that did not suit his figure. - Second! he squeaked. - Crush, Medvedev!
Bagration called out to the officer, and Tushin, with a timid and awkward movement, not at all like the military salute, but like the priests bless, putting three fingers to the visor, approached the general. Although Tushin's guns were assigned to bombard the hollow, he fired fire-brandskugels at the village of Shengraben, which was visible ahead, in front of which large masses of the French advanced.
No one ordered Tushin where and with what to shoot, and he, after consulting with his sergeant major Zakharchenko, for whom he had great respect, decided that it would be good to set fire to the village. "Fine!" Bagration said to the report of the officer and began to look around the entire battlefield that opened before him, as if thinking something. On the right side, the French came closest. Below the height on which the Kiev regiment stood, in the hollow of the river, the erratic rumble of guns was heard, and much to the right, behind the dragoons, the retinue officer pointed out to the prince at the French column that was bypassing our flank. To the left the horizon was limited to a close forest. Prince Bagration ordered two battalions from the center to go for reinforcements to the right. The retinue officer dared to remark to the prince that after the departure of these battalions, the guns would be left without cover. Prince Bagration turned to the retinue officer and looked at him with dull eyes in silence. It seemed to Prince Andrei that the remark of the retinue officer was just and that there really was nothing to say. But at this time an adjutant galloped up from the regimental commander, who was in the hollow, with the news that huge masses of the French were coming down, that the regiment was upset and was retreating to the Kyiv grenadiers. Prince Bagration bowed his head in agreement and approval. He walked at a pace to the right and sent an adjutant to the dragoons with orders to attack the French. But the adjutant sent there arrived half an hour later with the news that the dragoon regimental commander had already retreated beyond the ravine, for strong fire had been directed against him, and he was wasting people in vain and therefore hurried shooters into the forest.
- Fine! Bagration said.

I think many will agree with me that when going to any European city, it makes sense to find out in advance which places in the city you must visit, and Vilnius, in this case, is no exception!

We spent 2 weeks in the Lithuanian capital, visited many interesting places, and I already showed you Vilnius a little and talked about what historical squares and atmospheric streets we looked in, which designer and other districts of the city we walked through, which museums and exhibitions we spent a couple of hours when it was raining, from where the city offers stunning views of the Old Town and its rooftops from a bird's eye view, and where is the best meet the sunset.

In this article, I have collected all the sights of Vilnius, both paid and free, which you can see in 2-3 days, in addition to detailed description, for convenience, I give the schedule of work and ticket prices.

I want to warn you right away that in Vilnius everywhere (in museums, restaurants, cafes, shops) there is a system generally accepted for them, but a little unusual for us, for designating the days of the week by numbers, using Roman numerals “I-VII” (respectively, from Monday to Sunday ) and I will designate the mode of operation as well.

The Old Town of Vilnius is included in the UNESCO heritage list, and is the largest historical center, in other European cities the Old Town areas are smaller.

Cathedral Square and Cathedral

Cathedral Square (old name: Gediminas Square) is the main square of Vilnius, the central place for everyone holiday events cities, fairs, demonstrations, concerts, and other mass holidays are held here. This is the liveliest place in Vilnius, many sightseeing tours of Vilnius start from here, it is also a meeting place for tourists and residents of the city.

In the center of the square is the Cathedral of St. Stanislaus (CATHEDRAL BASILICA), in style it looks like temples Ancient Greece, once a pagan temple stood in its place, where on the altar all day long fire burned. Now inside, it certainly looks different.

  • Opening hours: I–VII, 7:00–19:30
  • Ticket price: for free

There is a monument to Gediminas and a bell tower on the square.

There is also a tile with the inscription Stebuklas (“miracle”), finding which, you can consider yourself lucky, because your wish will come true! To do this, you need to stand on it and make a wish, then turn around three times in a circle. And the tile was installed in honor of the Baltic Way - a “living human chain”, which was made up by the inhabitants of the three Baltic countries in protest against the Soviet occupation in 1989, they joined hands and connected the 3 capitals of Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius (in total, about 2 participated in the action million people).

Translated from Lithuanian, the Gates of Aushros (GATES OF DAWN) are the Guardians of the Dawn or the Gates of Dawn, and the second name is the Medina Gate. This is the only one of the 10 gates of the stone fortress wall that has survived to this day. Now this Renaissance building is a symbol and one of the main attractions of Vilnius.

First of all, Votota attract tourists with their chapel, which houses the world-famous miraculous icon Mother of God Ostrobramskoy is an important shrine for Catholics and Orthodox.

  • Opening hours: I–VII 6:00–19:00
  • Ticket price: for free

Town Hall Square and City Hall

Triangular Town Hall Square is one of the most ancient squares of the Old Town, once executions were performed here, and in general it was the central place in the city, there was also the main city market.

Now it is a calm and pleasant place, the square has been ennobled - 500 bushes were brought from Holland, and 12 maples from Germany were planted, benches and 55 lamps were installed.

We liked the fountain most of all in this square 🙂

The City Hall building (VILNIUS TOWN HALL) has been repeatedly restored and served as a meeting place, an art museum and even a theater.

Nearby there is a tourist information center where you can get free city maps and any information on the sights of Vilnius.

Many walking tours of the Old Town begin on the steps at the Town Hall.

Literatu Street

The sights of Vilnius include Literatu Street, this narrow and short street is one of the oldest in the city. It is called so because once there were many printing houses, and then bookstores, the Polish and Belarusian poet Adam Mickiewicz also lived here.

But we, and most tourists, are attracted to this street by something else, namely the project of 2008, when more than 200 unusual exhibits / plates made of ceramics, metal, wood, etc. were installed on the walls of the street.

Each of which is dedicated to various Lithuanian and foreign poets, writers from ancient times to the present day.

In general, there are more than 65 churches in Vilnius, and each one is a real work of art. The most famous, who became calling card of the city, this is the Church of St. Anne (CHURCH OF ST. ANNE) - this is a stunning example of brick Gothic, greatest masterpiece architecture.

There is a legend that when Napoleon saw this church, he certainly wanted to transport the church to Paris! As you can see, the idea failed 🙂 The name of the architect is still unknown, there are only assumptions.

For the construction of the church, 33 types of bricks were used. The church of St. Anne is connected with the Bernardine church through the gallery,

together they create a magnificent ensemble, it is this composition that is most often found on magnets.

Not a single excursion to the sights of Vilnius is complete without visiting these churches, you can look inside.

  • Opening hours: May 1–September 30 I–VII 09:00–18:00 and October 1–April 30 only during Mass I–VI 17:30; VII 9:00 and 11:00
  • Ticket price: for free

The Big and Small Ghetto (THE BIG AND LITTLE GHETTO) is not so much a landmark of Vilnius, but rather a place of memory. These are areas near the Town Hall Square, they were part of the medieval Jewish quarter (from Didžioji street to Dominikonų and Vokiečių streets), the first historically restored quarter - between Ašmenos, Dysnos and Mėsinių streets. During World War II, 11-12 thousand Jews lived in the Small Ghetto, and about 29,000 Jews lived in the Large Ghetto, most of whom were shot in Paneriai.

Rūdninkų Street 18 – the place of the main gate to the Great Ghetto, there is a memorial plaque with the plan of the ghetto, there is also an information and cultural Jewish center, there is a synagogue. The day of the liquidation of the Great Vilnius Ghetto September 23 is declared the Day of Remembrance of the victims of the genocide of the Jews of Lithuania. It is more interesting, of course, to walk around this quarter with a guide, you can learn a lot of details.

Towers and lookouts

Gediminas Castle is located in historical center on Castle Hill, rises at a height of 48 m from the base of the hill,

you can go upstairs both by funicular for 2 EUR, or on foot along a cobblestone path.

This is one of the most popular attractions in Vilnius, which all tourists certainly want to see.

The ruins of the Upper Castle have been preserved nearby - the foundation from the southern tower

and a small fragment of the defensive wall.

Already from the hill, the view is quite good,

but climbing to the top of the tower is definitely worth it!

The tower-museum contains models of Viljus castles, as well as various ancient exhibits, including weapons. There is a hall dedicated to the struggle for the independence of Lithuania, it was he who attracted our attention, there are collected photographs of a "human chain", people holding hands, stretching over 3 countries, with a total length of 600 km.

First of all, people come to the Gediminas Tower for a panoramic view from the observation deck at the very top,

and it is best to come half an hour before sunset to look at the city and in the light of day,

and then, looking at the exhibition, have time to go upstairs again,

meet the sunset and see the city already in the evening lights.

The view of the Old Town from here is without a doubt the best!

The Hill of Three Crosses is also visible from the Tower.

Inside the Bastion (The Bastion of the Vilnius Defensive Wall) there is a museum, and at the top there is an observation deck

with a panoramic view of the city, though the view, alas, is not superb,

so here - more precisely for museum exhibits. The exhibition is modern, with various multimedia descriptions, hints and legends, in one place you can learn about almost all the significant sights of Vilnius.

Yes, and it's just interesting to walk along the fortress wall here,

see guns.

The bell tower in the Cathedral Square (Cathedral Belfry) is one of the oldest and tallest towers in the Old City,

inside there is an exposition of bells and an old city clock,

well, the main goal to come here is to climb to the very top under the bell,

to see the city!

The view opens on the streets of the Old Town,

which means to many sights of Vilnius - to the roof of the Cathedral, to the statue of "3 Crosses" on the hill and to the castle of Gediminas.

The monument "Three Crosses" (THE HILL OF THREE CROSSES) is located on the right bank of the Vilnia River (Nerys),

on top of a mountain in Kalnu Park.

Once upon a time there was a Crooked Castle on this place, now there is no castle, and the hill is a viewing platform.

In our opinion, this is one of the best places in the city to meet the sunset,

it also belongs to the free attractions of Vilnius!

Crosses, according to legend, were installed as a memory of the Franciscan monks who died at this place at the hands of pagans. Initially, the crosses were wooden, after some time they collapsed and were replaced with concrete ones. Then, 35 years later, by order of the authorities, the monument was blown up, the hill stood without crosses for almost 40 years, and only in 1989 the monument was revived.

If you go along the White Bridge from the old city to the opposite side of the river, you can get to the promenade terrace.

It overlooks the embankment.

and the opposite side of the river.

Neat flower beds are planted on the terrace, as well as ottoman chairs and even catches wi-fi. During lunch, we met here "white collars" taking sunbaths 🙂

The TV Tower (Vilnius TV Tower) was built in 1981, its height is 326.5 m, the tower is one of the tallest buildings in all of Eastern Europe, so its spire can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. We love observation decks, especially such high ones, so we did not miss the opportunity, and of course, we went there!

At the upper level (165 m), which can be reached by an elevator in 45 seconds (917 steps), there is a panoramic restaurant rotating at a speed of 4 m / s. Milky Way". They say that from such a height in clear weather not only the city and all the sights of Vilnius are visible, but also the surroundings within a radius of 50 km.

We were on an overcast day, so we were content with the views of the area and the semi-clear outline of the Old City in the haze. The restaurant makes one full rotation around the axis in 55 minutes, so you can come for lunch or dinner and take a look at everything.

There is a small museum on the ground floor of the TV tower, and at the foot of the tower on the street there is an obelisk with the names of the rebels (12 people) who died under tank fire in 1991 while trying to liberate the tower from Soviet troops.

Also, 5 years ago, a historical antenna park was opened next to the tower.

Republic of Užupis

Užupis district is Vilnius Montmartre, the whole district is one big attraction! Once Užupis was an abandoned quarter, but unexpectedly in 1997 it turned into the Republic of Zarechye, its own president appeared here, its own constitution (printed on the wall of one of the houses in different languages, including Russian), currency, customs and independence day which is celebrated on April 1st.

The symbol of Užupis is a column with an angel.

Almost the same angel we noticed on one of the houses in Užupis.

Now this bohemian area is inhabited by creative people- artists,

sculptors, poets, which is why there are many workshops here, you can walk and look into the windows 🙂

There is an old cemetery

and several churches

in general, this is a pleasant area for walking, within walking distance of the Old Town.

The Museum of Genocide Victims is located in the building where the KGB functioned for 50 years and this place is one of the significant sights of Vilnius. We have been to this museum twice - on our very first visit to Vilnius a few years ago and now.

Many things in the museum can shock especially impressionable people, for example, there are prison cells of that time, a yard for walking prisoners, as well as an extensive exhibition of personal belongings of prisoners, which tells about the struggle of the Lithuanian people.

But the most terrible place is the very room in which several people were shot a day. There is blood on the walls, and the fact that they play a video about executions, washing off blood, new victims, and so on an infinite number of times adds to the horror.

Also in the continuation of the story, it is worth looking into Memorial Complex in Tuskulėnai Manor, which is discussed below.

  • Website: www.genocid.lt/muziejus

The Memorial Complex of the Tuskulėnai Peace Park is where evidence of abuse with Lithuanians. In 1944-1947, people who were shot in the inner prison of the NKVD (MGB) were secretly buried here. Their remains rest in the chapel-columbarium - a rather disturbing place.

There is also a museum on the territory of the complex, the collection contains preserved documents, including execution orders, as well as personal belongings of the victims of the genocide.

Cultural entertainment

Like any large city, Vilnius, of course, hosts cultural events, there is an opera, a theater, a concert hall, and cinemas. In general - who likes what!

This 5-meter sculpture "Three Muses" is a symbol of the Lithuanian National Drama Theater on Gediminas Avenue. The sculpture depicts ancient Greek muses: in the center is Melpomene - the muse of tragedy, the main patroness of the theater, on the sides: Thalia - the muse of comedy and Calliope - the muse of poetry and philosophy. The singularity of the sculpture lies in the fact that from different angles it looks different each time, the figures of the girls can be seen suffering, triumphant or looking to the sky.

Other entertainment

Balloons

In Vilnius you can ride hot-air balloon, this is one of the few European capitals where such flights are allowed!

And it is here that this is not just an attraction, as, for example, in Tallinn or Paris, where the ball is tied to the ground, and you can climb it only up to a certain height, and the whole action, along with landing and being in the air, takes about 20 minutes. Here you can make a real flight-journey, see the sights of Vilnius from the air, and even get a certificate!

For several days in a row we watched these giant balloons soaring over the city and secretly envied the lucky ones who ended up in the basket 🙂

Flight cost: 109 EUR (with Vilnius City Card - 99 EUR).

Segways

Segways are a great way to see the sights of Vilnius, both the Old Town and its new districts in a short time. Segways can be rented for independent riding, or join a guided tour!

Bicycles

A bicycle is a more conservative way to explore the city, but not without its advantages and even romance 🙂 There are both rental points and companies organizing bike tours in the city.

Bicycle rental from 3 EUR / hour, 9 EUR / day, the cost of a guided tour - from 15 EUR.

Walking tours

From May 15 to September 15, Vilnius City Card holders can join a tour of the Old Town, the main thing is to choose a day with the language you need, in Russian excursions 3 times a week, otherwise you will have to practice German or English 🙂

Alas, we were a bit late as we were in Vilnius in the second half of September.

Well, there is a way out - for the same holders of "guest of the city" cards, you can use the free audio guide and go on an independent fascinating route around the city.

We did not use it, because we have long fallen in love with the application with walks in any European city Izi.Travel, you can download any routes, there are both paid and free ones, the application works offline, and it detects your location and talks about a specific object as soon as you approach him. Read more about this service here:

If you, however, prefer live tours with a local guide, then there are also plenty of them, all information can be found in the booklets at the hotel or at the information center.

City bus tours

  1. It’s hard not to notice these red buses with the inscription “VILNIUS CITY TOUR”, these are familiar to all of Europe, and even St. Petersburg and Moscow, Hop On – Hop Off sightseeing tours. Start at 10:00; 11:15; 12:30; 13:45; 15:05.
  2. There are also other excursions around Vilnius and Trakai - buses with daisies and the inscription "CITY TOUR". For Vilnius City Card holders, these excursions are subject to a 50% discount. Start at 10:00; 10:35 a.m.; 12:00; 12:35; 14:00; 14:35; 15:30.

In both cases, the starting points are from the Cathedral and Town Hall squares at the times indicated above.

The cost of tickets for each of the tours in Vilnius is 15 EUR per person, in Trakai - 20 EUR.

Vicinity of Vilnius

In addition to the sights of Vilnius, you can also visit its surroundings, and there really is something to see, and we were convinced of this on our last trip, when we traveled all this on bicycles!

Botanical Garden of Vilnius University

The Botanical Garden of Vilnius University is the largest garden in Lithuania, its size is 199 hectares, about 10,000 plant names from 886 families grow in the garden, including collections of rhododendrons, dahlias and lilacs. Such an extensive collection undoubtedly makes this garden the best in Lithuania.

The garden is located a little outside the city, but you can get there by public transport, the journey takes about an hour.

Europe Park (EUROPOS PARKAS, Open-Air Museum) is a huge open-air Museum of Modern Art on an area of 55 hectares, and even in an unusual place. It took us almost half a day to see all the exhibits, more than 100 sculptures (and you can still climb or touch them).

  • Website: www.europosparkas.lt
  • Address: Joneikiškių Village, Vilnius District
  • Opening hours: I–VII 10:00 a.m. to sunset
  • Ticket price: 8 EUR/6 EUR/4 EUR/

If you have more time and you have already seen all the sights of Vilnius, then you should definitely go to Trakai and Kaunas! In principle, with a strong desire, both cities can be superficially seen in one day, but it is better to leave as early as possible! You can get a general idea about these cities by looking at our cycling article (link above).

Vilnius attractions on the map

Finally

Now, I think you have a rough idea of what sights of Vilnius are worth visiting, so now the choice is yours =)

If you love art, are interested in the history of the city and plan to visit almost all the museums of the city, and also actively travel by public transport, then it makes sense to purchase a Vilnius City Card, you can do this at the Vilnius Tourist Information Center (location is indicated on the map), or on the official website.

Cost of Vilnius City Card:

  • 24 hours without transport = 15 EUR
  • 24 hours with public transport = 20 EUR
  • 72 hours with public transport = 30 EUR

Helpful information:

  • If you have not bought tickets to Viljus yet, then you can choose the best flight for the price and time here .
  • For accommodation, we can recommend the stylish and modern Comfort Hotel, where we stayed ourselves. See also all Vilnius hotels.
  • Do not forget that insurance is required for a Schengen visa, and in any case, taking into account European prices, it is better to travel around Lithuania and Vilnius having it on hand. You can choose the most profitable option and apply for insurance online here. .

That's all, have a great holiday!

I hope my article about the sights of Vilnius will be useful to you in planning your trip, and you will see all the most interesting things!
